OT: Last minute shopping. What are you buying and who are you buying it for?

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on December 19th, 2019 at 11:49 AM

Amazingly, I'm almost done with my Christmas shopping, although I always hit the mall on the 23rd or 24th for stocking stuffers and last minute deals on random crap no one needs or wants.

Little Hatter is the big winner this year with a PS4 and God knows what else my wife bought on Amazon.  College Hatter needs a new phone all of a sudden for some reason so I'm taking her to the store to pick one out.  Money and gift cards for her too, since she's about to move into her first on campus apartment.

Mrs. Hatter got a dental implant for Christmas, but I'll pick her up some sort of jewelry at the last minute like I do every year when I stop caring about how much I'm spending mid-day on the 23rd.

Am I the only one not done shopping?  What are you buying for the kids/spouse/5*recruits?

Got tired of the wife not giving me any ideas so I bought us a hot tub yesterday. Won't be here for 4-6 weeks because of the special order but I am good with that!!

I've had a hot tub for ~6 years.  Fantastic investment.  Also, you really don't need all the fancy chemicals that come with it.  Get a high quality filter.  Fill it with quality water (no well water).  Put chlorine in once a week and every time after you get out of it.  Drain, replace filter, and wipe down with a good hot tub cleaner once a year and it'll last you a decade or more.

Nothing like sitting in 103F water, melting away your tension, sipping scotch, while its 20F outside and snowing.

Got my kids a Nintendo Switch and a bunch of books and board games to hopefully balance out the 16 hours per day of video games they'll be playing. Somehow I'm more or less done with my shopping for my family. Now I just need to find a sexy Santa Claus thong I can put on for Dr Brutus on Christmas Eve?

I really want a Switch, but don't want to drop $300+ to play Zelda, Mario, and Metroid. I was hoping there would be a better deal this season, but it looks like I'll have to wait for holiday 2020. The problem with that is the new Xbox is due at that time. I'm unsure I want to drop around $1,000 for two gaming consoles at the same time, plus late next year, I will have to purchase the new iPhone.

I think the switch is worth it.  I have three boys that are 18, 16, and 14.  I got four Xbox One’s a few years ago for each of us (yes, one of them is mine). The youngest got a switch this summer for his birthday.  The Xbox is still his go to, but he does use it and so does my wife.

The Zelda games I have played to completion are the original, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess. The oldest Nintendo console I have is the Gamecube, which means I am unable to play Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild. Of the bunch I have played, Wind Waker is my favorite followed closely by Ocarina of Time. From what I have read and heard about Breath of the Wild, it's fantastic. I will not be surprised if it takes the iron throne when I finally get around to playing it.

If you speak to any electronics retail worker and take a look online, it is rare as hell that Nintendo allows its products to go on sale. Your best bet would be to check out Costco / Sam's for a bundle deal, check out Target because they sometimes offer a gift card with the purchase so you sort of get a discount OR buy a used one. Nintendo does not authorize retailers to put their stuff on sale for some odd reason. The best Black Friday deal that was out there this year was the Target deal or getting a free game with it.

If you plan to play mostly portable, you can get a Switch Lite for only $200. Has similar functionality and actually better battery life, but the joy cons are not removable and it doesn't have a dock, therefore no TV connectivity. Worth it to people who don't care if it's on a big screen or not. I thought I'd usually play mine on the TV when I got it, but almost always just grab it and go these days...

I'm currently shopping for some Michigan pajamas for that Devoted guy. I just need his address. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Got my Mom a chromebook, decided to get a jump on setting it up before giving it to her to make the transition easier.

She then received a welcome to your new Chromebook email (fuck).  I told her it was hackers phishing to get her personal info and she bought it.

fairly massive stocking stuffer journey this a.m.  we've got lots of stockings so even though its all pretty cheap stuff (gum, sunblock, cheapo polarized sun glasses, etc) it adds up.  i will swing by a large sports-department store and load up there tomorrow or monday.  the kids are all sports nuts and michigan fans - makes for quick and easy shopping.

mrs XM is getting a picture of her and a couple of the kids that was in the paper earlier this year.  i got a 'real' copy and had it framed.  sshhhh.  its a surprise, nobody tell her.

I've been done for about a week, but we drive over to Michigan for Christmas, so I have to get done early so I have time to wrap and pack everything.

Got the kiddo one of those shiatsu foot massagers, since she's walking all over the Iowa campus and working in food service in the dorms.  Figured it would be a nice surprise to help her feet and legs recover.
