OT: Kevan Thibodeaux wants to play skool, Pete Finebaum takes offense

Submitted by JacquesStrappe on January 13th, 2022 at 7:11 PM

Kevan Thibodeaux has caused ESPN SEC apologist and Harbaugh nemesis Pete Finebaum offense for taking swipe at Alabama’s academic reputation in spite of recent improvements to institution, with Pete apparently misunderstanding that the reason ‘Bama has said reputation is due to years of relative academic neglect.

Sorry kids, it looks like the media embed function is broken so you will just have do an old fashioned copy-and-paste of the URL to read the story:

This was meant to be a little tongue-in-cheek. To be fair, and with no animus toward Paul Finebaum, I actually agree with him and am genuinely impressed with many of the young men on their team who are articulate, ambitious and directed, and genuinely good people on and off the field. Bryce Young and LB Will Anderson are the epitome of good ambassadors for their program. And yes, Alabama is a much stronger school now, having improved greatly even if many people refuse to acknowledge it.

It is also ironic that Thibodeaux, who is equally if not more so impressive, made such an impassioned case without recognizing the irony that Oregon is not head-and-shoulders better than ‘Bama at least so far as academics, or rather academic reputation, is concerned. In this light, his choice to attend Oregon is somewhat baffling considering he could have really had it all with academics and access to Nike and Phil Knight by accepting his offer from Stanford.

That said, Thibodeaux has a point. ‘Bama has its reputation for a reason and it is not because of its historic commitment to scholarly excellence. Overcoming decades of lagging academics can’t be turned around by only a few more decades of success on the gridiron helping to attract better funding, better faculty, and better students.

I took his comments to be more focused on the expectations of football players as students more so than the whole school. Bama and Oregon are similar academic schools in ranking. I’m guessing Oregon may allow their football players more freedom in what they major in and how much time they devote to education than at Alabama. I doubt Saban gives a shit about his players getting degrees. His expectation is that you are in the weight room, film room, and practice field. Take care of that school stuff if you have time. To that end, a football player at Oregon has a much higher chance of coming out of college with a much better education than at Alabama even if the schools in general have similar academic rankings.

Writing this made me think of another question, when was the last time a team lost a player to academic ineligibility? This used to happen on a regular basis 25+ years ago. Somehow magically no football player gets poor grades anymore.

Last year (2020), the SEC (at least Alabama) started to let players wear "SEC" patches with the word "Graduate" if the player had already graduated. Since Alabama won the championship, I became quite familiar with that patch, and I found it very impressive. I would say it was close to 1/2 the players on the field who wore those patches..guys like Mac Jones, Devonte Smith, Alex Leatherwood. That speaks A LOT to the type of culture at Alabama; one, that they can get players there who want to graduate, and, two that those players stick around long enough to do so. That was probably the biggest difference between last year's team and this year's, not having those 4th and 5th year players. Having that type of experience and leadership throughout your team is a huge advantage. Say what you want about Saban, Alabama and the SEC, it's hard to argue that Alabama has not only talked the talk, they've also walked he walk.

Alabama has an 83% acceptance rate. You need a 1060 on the SAT to be considered. You get 800 on the SAT for signing your name.

Cool Story Bro: I sat next next to Alabama Professor Geroge C. Rable when he was runner up at the 2011 Lincoln Book Prize award. He lost to a Fiery Trial.

Neg away gentlemen, but I think Pete is right for once. They say that the broken clock is right twice a day and that's the case here. I really think people are underselling the value of an Alabama GED, it's a mighty thing.

I thought this was a thread about Thib not declaring for draft but staying in school, which I then figured: obviously! The Lions pick second! Smart move, Kayvon, smart move!

Pete’s right. Don’t you know, their engineering classes are above and beyond better than most. Just ask Da’Shawn Hand! Couple that with Pete doing lectures, and it’s a winning recipe. #1 public university, national championships be damned.

He has a point though - I hate AL as much as anyone but the campus is spectacular and it's not like it's Ferris State or anything it's a real university.  They have like, professors who went to Harvard and everything.
