Well eff me - RIP. Was going places.

No, no, no, no...
That's terrible. Ugh. 24 years old, headed into his prime...an absolute beast and seemed like a great kid.
So sad.
Terrible news. Man, just awful.

This is one of the worst sports stories I have ever seen. For those of you who don't know baseball, Jose Fernandez was a 24 year old pitcher who was already one of the best in the game and even on track to possibily be a Hall of Famer. Leaves behind a pregnant girlfriend, and a thin Marlins team in a battle for a playoff spot.
September 25th, 2016 at 11:00 AM ^
The thing that sickened me the most was that he just announced last week that his girlfriend was pregnant. I didn't follow him much, but I have a nasty pit in my stomach after hearing it this morning.

That's just terrible. Thoughts are with his family. Too young.

That's awful.

Talk about a buzz killer. Dan Lebatard was basically in tears talking about it this morning. Great talent but sounds like he was a special kid as well.
September 25th, 2016 at 10:18 AM ^
a kid with a wonderful infectious personality and a joyous outlook on life. If you ever watched him pitch and respond to teammates in the dugout, you could just tell how he made all those around him feel better.
He missed two years of his career due to Tommy John surgery, but returned this spring and has compiled the kind of dominating stuff that marked him as one baseball's best pitchers. A two-time all-star, Fernandez at 24 is a Cuban native who three times tried to defect from the island nation and being jailed before arriving in Miami at 15. He was drafted out of high school by the Marlins. He was rookie of the year in the NL in 2013 and was practically unbetable at home. He was a great hitter, too, and no doubt the pitching foundation of the Marlins.
His body along with those of two others was discovered at about 3:30 am today by the Coast Guard after his 32-foot was discovered overturned on the jetties at the government cut off Miami beach.

Every game he started at home was with a capacity crowd. They loved him, which was a big reason he was never traded.

Such an amazing talent and at such a young age too. Prayers going up for his family and friends.

Damn. Horrible news. Great upcoming player.

Just terrible. Boating at night is basically like driving with your headlights out and scares the crap out of me. Doing at a speed high enough to flip a 30 ft boat is beyond comprehension IMO. So sad
September 25th, 2016 at 9:46 AM ^
Boating at night is never safe. This is so sad, guy was a class act and so damn young

Disagree completely. Boating at night is like boating in the day: it's quite safe if you're being safe and you know what you're doing. If you're screaming around at high speeds without lifejackets or an understanding of navigation lights or charts, which by all accounts so far is what happened, then no, it's not safe and that's what creates terrible accidents like this one.
September 25th, 2016 at 11:37 AM ^
Agree. Not saying this is the case in this particular crash but the means to purchase a boat do not always match the means to learn how to drive one. Its shocking that you don't need a license to drive a boat.

This is what has always kept me from buying a boat. I don't know boating safety or how to learn it.
September 25th, 2016 at 2:26 PM ^
There's an organization called the United States Power Squadron which has local chapters just about anywhere there's water. They offer lots of seminars and courses on things like boating safety, navigation, boat handling, weather, etc. They're the go-to people for learning just about anything a boater should know. I highly recommend taking a look if you want to get into boating.

Omg. I had just watched his story a few days ago about his defection from Cuba and saving his mother who had fallen into the water.
What a tragic loss.
September 25th, 2016 at 9:59 AM ^
Truly tragic. Devastating loss for the Cuban-American community, MLB, and his family. Rest in peace, Jose. Baseball and the world lost a great one way too soon.
September 25th, 2016 at 10:04 AM ^
Too sad man. RIP.
September 25th, 2016 at 10:25 AM ^
Tragic news, the sport has now lost 2 blossoming stars in the last 2 years, the other being Oscar Taveras.
September 25th, 2016 at 10:39 AM ^
I'm in a ongoing fantasy baseball league and I'll admit, I never update my watchlist. I cleared it out the other day and found that I still hade Oscar flagged on that list and it made me sad. Now this happened and I feel much more terrible.
September 25th, 2016 at 10:32 AM ^
Way too soon. RIP

Terrible news.
And RIP to the most wicked slider I have ever seen.
September 25th, 2016 at 11:21 AM ^
what a horrible disaster! aw man...this sucks so much.
September 25th, 2016 at 11:33 AM ^
Really a terrible accident. My son ran the Miami Marlins 5k this morning which was supposed to have all the runners go to the game afterwards. They found out just after the race about the accident and the game cancellation. Needless to say it was a shock.

...nothing good ever happens at 2 o'clock in the morning. Absolutely horrible. Perhaps the best young arm in the game.
September 25th, 2016 at 12:02 PM ^
Very, very sad. An incredible talent who meant a ton to Miami.
September 25th, 2016 at 12:05 PM ^
Damn. Was looking forward to seeing him at every all star game for the rest of his career. I particularly enjoyed the "did you catch that?!" moment.
He seemed like a truly classy person. And now his child will never know him. Rest in peace sir.
September 25th, 2016 at 12:36 PM ^
Having lived in Miami for several years, I can tell you that people are having a tough time digesting this news. This kid was always a joy to watch, even when he wasn't pitching. What he went through in his personal life made him a fan favorite as well. This is just a terrible tragedy.
September 25th, 2016 at 12:46 PM ^
Fernandez had so much positive going for him, in life every bit as much as in baseball.
RIP
September 25th, 2016 at 1:37 PM ^
Out in the dark speeding in a boat? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
September 25th, 2016 at 2:16 PM ^
That's an absolutely embarrassing reaction to the tragic loss of a young man who truly loved what he did, and walked through hell to have the opportunity. I'm sorry that you have the inability to feel empathy
September 25th, 2016 at 5:04 PM ^
What prize do you win for being an ass, kb?
