OT- Jim Herrmann hired as Colts LB coach

Submitted by ScruffyTheJanitor on

Thought it might interest the board to learn that Jim Herrmann, co-ordinator of the '97 Michigan Championship defense, has been hired as the new Colts Linebackers coach. Was pretty great during his stint here, though I also believe his tenure was marred by the inability to defend the spread-- which, as you might have scarred into your psyche, has been a major issue around Michigan for a long, long time.

Coached for the Jets for a few seasons after Michigan and then for about half a decade with the Giants until Coughlin resigned. I wouldn't call him a great LB coach, but he's been solid with the talent he's been given.

good enough for national championship. But, IIRC he was also responsible for Donovan McNabb rolling over us among others. the game passed him by as he never adjusted to spread offenses.

Two weeks after that game they had at the big house, they traveled to unranked North Carolina State (who would finish the season with 5 losses) and they ended up losing 38-17.

I was shocked. That was my first glimpse into the habit teams had of playing incredible against Michigan and then quickly going back to normal against the rest of their competition.

But struggled to defend mobile QBs. Still, year after year, he managed to dial up great game plans.

Had some great plans against PSU, was inconsistent against Purdue, but some of those years just destroyed their QBs with pressure. Had some great blitz schemes.

I generally thought he was a top 25 DC in college football, but he just seemed to have an obvious weakness against mobile QBs that Michigan struggled to overcome. He was a good DC for 9 seasons for Michigan, but it was time to get some new blood in there when they English became the DC.

Maybe its because i'm a UM fan and have witnessed nothing but horrors of futility against mobile QBs...but are there DC/teams that are known for their success against Mobile QBs that can also throw the ball a bit? That combinations just seems lethal esp. if the teams has even average playmakers at the skill positions.

IDK..but we tend to talk like Herrman, English and others didn't know what they were doing..but I wonder if its more to do with the problems mobile QBs with a decent arm cause.

Forced to fire Jim Herrmann, I have always thought this was the first domino in what was later to happen to the Michigan progam. Maybe the Moeller situation/firing was bigger, but this was a BIG piece.

I used to be good friends with a player on the late 90s teams.  I asked him what Moeller and Carr were like and he said "great guys, everyone loved playing for them"

I asked him about Jim Hermann and he said "Massive Prick.  Everyone on the team hates that guy"

To each his own, but in my experience, Jim Herrmann was a great guy. Could play a tough prick, and was hell on the field, but he really helped me during a tough time in my life, completely unprompted and of his own volition.

Up by 2 scores in the fourth quarter.

Ohio State's two touchdown drives to win registered only one third down.

Just seeing/hearing the name still aggravates the hell out of me.

Was he perfect? no . But he represented some of the best of what Michigan used to be. If you are going to criticize him for some results you have to credit him for 1997.

I have golfed with him and been up at Camp Michigania with him and his family back in the day. Super guy who is just a "regular guy". He was the type of coach who slept in his office and would run through a wall for UM.

He helped David Harris out when they were both with the Jets.

Good for him and the Colts.

I don't know why people seem to think Lloyd's offense playing too conservatively was always his problem. I mean he did play too conservatively, but usually it was the defense that caused us to lose games we shouldn't have. 1998: Syracuse gashed the defense 1999: Blew 24-7 lead to Illinois 2000: Gave up 54 to Northwestern and blew lead to Purdue 2001: offense was bad...pass 2002: Iowa gashed us 2003: Iowa and Oregon gashed us 2004: No answer for Troy Smith or Vince Young 2005: Blew infinite 4th quarter leads
