OT- Interesting comments from Malik McDowell at Combine
BTW, please draft me.
Will land in somewhere between rounds 3-9.
But you can't spell team without m-e. /s
Malik McDowell going off script, saying coaches eventually conformed to his style bc they couldnt change/improve him, says he cld play safety

Sensitive language, but funny.
I'm not going to lie, I just wanted an excuse to type 3-9. And now I have done it twice. Thank you.
Me too, but lets not kid ourselves that we would have loved to have him. Imagine going Charlton, Glasgow, McDowell, and Wormley together?
Speak for yourself—I didn't lose a second of sleep over him going to MSU, and neither did plenty of other Michigan fans who suspected—with good reason—that he was trouble.
I think people are laying it on thick. McDowell was a 5* player in high school. He played like a 5* player in college until MSU put what is now looking like one of the biggest debacles on the field in years. He was projected to be a top ten pick going into this season. Lets not pretend that McDowell is the first and last player to become a malcontent on a bad team in a bad program. McDowell would have helped this program.
Kind of an interesting, hypothetical psychology debate. I don't think an 18 year is completely set in their ways that a solid coaching staff couldn't mold them into "The Michigan Way". Football players need to be confident, but there's a big difference between confidence and smug arrogance that a lot of these guys seem to have.
Obviously, we've had our fair share of guys flame out, but this is two years in a row that a Spartan's ego has been the national headline during the draft prep. Hi Connor Cook!
I agree. It's hard to say how anyone would have been changed by a little discipline or consequences from the right people.
He would have certainly landed himself in Harbaugh's doghouse pretty quickly with that attitude. Whether he would have worked out of it or ended up transfering we will never know, but I don't see Harbaugh ever letting any player dictate what the team does.
Clearly their lockerroom went to shit and he was probably a big reason why. He's gonna slip to the third round. NFL is a business.
I disagree. McDowell's attitude would have clearly dictated what the team would have done: bench his ass if it continued for more than about 2 minutes.
Reminder: no politics on the blog.
keeping it real...to the tune of several million dollars.
guess he still needs to mature a bit - and hopefully he does (despite being a spartan). my growing pains didnt occur under the bright lights or whatever so cant really relate but still tough to see those type situations.
maybe a humbling, preventable lapse smacking him in the face will help, who knows. the dude mightve just continued to cost himself good money which is a shame. hes gifted so hes got time and will get multiple shots but even the supremely talented can run themselves out of the league with enough effort
He's a freaking talented dude. Would have looked good in the Maize n Blue. He'll do well in the NFL regardless.
Somehow some way I feel like McDowell is revenge for Will Campbell's bust status.
mcdowell looked superior in my opinion, both as a recruit and in college (though he obviously had ups and downs).
i dont think hand entered the draft - i believe he started few games this year and played well enough after mostly reserve time prior 2 years (and if he didnt start, i know he played some key minutes and made some plays in another crazy DL rotation at bama)
Not a fair comparison, as bama had a ton of talent in front of him vs. staee. Let's compare in a few years.
totally agree, not a great or fair comparison - but they asked the question above so figured id try to offer an opinion
Malik McDowell=Tom Gholston 2.0

The buzz elsewhere is mixed, some people don't seem very concerned about what McDowell said when talking to the press. He is obviously very talented.
He was clearly a problem for MSU. It doesn't take much reading between the lines to suspect that there were locker room issues last season, and McDowell seems to be confirming that he was one of those issues.
On the other hand, he had no help and it appears that he allowed the coaches the move him around on the line according to their needs (unless he was the one insisting on being moved, in which case that's cancerous behavior) rather than just insisting he play one preferred position.
But telling teams that you learned nothing from coaches isn't going to fly well, unless he mitigates that with good private interviews. No idea how he does that, though.
ha, some teams have actually made out quite nicely selecting or finding value in players with "red flags" or "character concerns" - the bengals immediately come to mind, marv lewis has sent multiple dudes to the pro bowl that other teams wouldnt touch. its certainly an interesting business
