OT: Happy 247th Birthday to the United States of America

Submitted by Amazinblu on July 4th, 2023 at 8:00 AM

The headline says it all.   Happy Birthday to our wonderful country.  Hoping everyone takes a moment or two to reflect on freedom, sacrifices made by those who came before us, and our willingness to preserve it for future generations.

Eh, maybe. I'm not sure.

What I am sure is that there are many countries more democratic than the US (link), which doesn't sit well with me. I prefer democracy.

Still, it's our birthday and I intend to celebrate with good friends, good food, some wine, and watch some fireworks. Happy birthday everyone.

Name a nation that had as much power as the US and did more good with it. (Don't mischaracterize the question as "chronicle all the bad things the US has done. Answer what was asked.)

Then, if you insist on looking at the bad things, name a country that was as powerful as the US that did more net good that the US.)

This is apparently a story that Abraham Lincoln liked to tell:

Ethan Allen returned to England after the war, and the British made fun of him. One day they put a picture of George Washington in an outhouse where Allen would be sure to see it. He used the outhouse but said nothing about the picture. Then the British asked him about it and Allen said it was a very appropriate place for an Englishman to hang the picture because “nothing will make an Englishman shit so quick as the sight of General Washington.”

Celebrate our country that fosters what can be and allows self-reflection. Merit and achievement translate into our sports scoring and fandom.

I look at the OP and the 247 makes me dwell on two things:

- Only 3 years until 250, that’s kinda a milestone number. Good for you, America.
- I remember 200 years, me and my best mate drove over to Windsor, bought a 40 oz Canadian Club at the Duty Free, and got plenty drunk watching Charlie Daniels Band playing on a barge on the Detroit River. Good times.
