OT GoT: "The School Up North Remembers!"

It would be great to see some Michigan memes with that caption.

You have been ordered, by declaration of The Council for Defense of What is Truly Great, to remove Charles Woodson from your avatar forthwith!

People are allowed to have some measure of discussion about the merits of GoT or Star Wars, but do not throw Godfather in there!

Your very rights and priveleges hang in the balance!

Shame! Shame! Shame!

Most overrated show on TV.

It's not terrible - but it's not this all-time great show either. It's just the "in" thing and I can see that if you had a bunch of people who watched how it would be fun to watch together and shut down Twitter with your hot takes. It's like Empire.

The hype far exceeds anything else. They're the Notre Dame of TV.

Which is an interesting comparison because the show is primative and savage (not how the kids use that word) as hell.

If you can get past the incest, cutting heads off people and animals, and the fact that we have all these brillant people in the show but no one can figure out how to stop living like a barbarian...there are some really strong acting performances on the show.

Cersei, Tyrion, Arya and the bald guy with his manhood cut off all give strong performances in the first 3 seasons I watched until I decided this show is what it is and it's not going to get any better. It'll be an arcahic hour of fantasy, war, and sex...which is cool, I'd just rather be on MGoBlog.

Everyone comments on the writing being great, but I never saw it...it's just full of random plot twists where people die unexceptedly. Everything else is pretty straightforward.

It doesn't touch The Wire and it pains me when some calls it the best show ever...but I'm trying to do better about respecting opinions. Even if they're wrong (kidding).

is some really good writing on the show.  A great example is Roose Bolton and the lead up to the Red Wedding.  I hadn't read any of the books at that time, and the way his motives insidiously turned over the course of time without drawing the viewers attention was really impressive.  It becomes obvious exactly when it was supposed to be but seriously not a moment too soon.

I think Game of Thrones is one of the best page to screen adaptations of all time, but you do have some legitimate criticisms though, I will give you that.

But does it have to be Notre Dame?  How about Georgia.  Can it just be Georgia?

Yost, it's even more important to respect people's opinons WHEN YOU'RE WRONG...

As you are here.

If GoT is "overrated" what would you have us believe is underrated, or just right rated?

If a show were to be judged by its writing, acting, visual creativity, or ability to develop characters over years, GoT would be among the highest rated in all categories of any show ever on the tube...Objectively.

Now, if all people were instead to use the "Of Interest to Yost" meter to measure shows, it might fall short. But again, describe the "better" shows you enjoy?

And enjoy Mgoblog while GoT is on... it's like going to the gym at 2am, all the equipment is open, cause everybody else is watching Game!

You're looking into my comments a little too much.

It's overrated because it doesn't come even CLOSE to matching the hype. Like I said, Notre Dame.

--------As I already said-------

It's not a terrible show, Notre Dame isn't a terrible program and Brian Kelly isn't a terrible coach. It's 9-3 with the occasional 12-1 season and the occasional 4-8 season.

But the GoT hype is like it's Bama/Saban...it's not.

there is SO MUCH LESS sex and nudity on the show as the seasons have progressed.  I went back and watched season one in prep for this season and was pretty surprised at the amount of sex.  I think they did it to draw in mainstream viewers that wouldn't otherwise be into a fantasy series, hoping the great writing and acting would hook them, and it seems to have worked brilliantly. So yeah, it was a little excessive early on, but there is literally almost none anymore (and hasn't been for several seasons).

were a couple of scenes in Baelish's brothel and with Danaerys "in training" that would have been NC-17 if they were theaterical releases.  I think the show is better for having steered the ship away from that.  Some of it felt....... creepy at times.  Particularly "Garden of Bones" in Season 2 with Joffrey that veered into snuff.  I almost stopped watching the show after that epiosde as I think it crossed the line between risky and just kind of sick.  It has cleaned that stuff up since and the show is better for it.

Yost, if you think there are "random plot twists where people die unexpectedly," then you're not really paying attention.  Every big "twist" is greatly foreshadowed and/or is a realistic outcome of a situation (as opposed to the prototypical story of overcoming insurmountable odds or some deus ex machina saving the day).

I love GoT, but respect your opinion. It's definitely not for everyone, and I can safely say that I'm surprised its as popular as it is. But for me, the characters, drama, backstabbing, storylines, all of it is incredibly entertaining. A ton of people watch the show and obsess over it so I have to assume the writers are doing something right.

But again, its not for everyone. Case in point: my wife and I hated WestWorld. To us, it made absolutely no sense up until the last episode or two, and I found myself fighting just to stay awake through pretty much all of it. Couldn't understand any of the characters or what they were trying to accomplish until it was clear the robots were taking over. In my opinion, the show was too smart for its own good.

I know a lot of people here on the board will disagree with me, but count me as part of the flock that just "didn't get" that show.

Don't you dare compare Star Wars to Game of thrones. Star Wars is the greatest story of all time, told over many mediums. GOT is a fun show that is worth watching.

kurpit, I'm pretty sure on this blog, at least by your last couple posts, YOU'RE the Blowhard!

Is it "uncool" when characters on GoT say "The North Remembers" because the Starks have been getting bullied, outwitted, betrayed & murdered ever since Bran was shoved off the tower?

Should they drop that phrase until they chalk up some body count?

Weel, on GoT that has begun! HOPEFULLY in M-osu it will as well...!!!

but one score losses don't qualify as getting murdered to me. There were a few games where I think murdered would apply but saying murdered for 15 years is a little too much to me. I should have explained that.

Despite the is this a bad thread or is this not a bad thread and nerds fighting on whether other nerds should follow their Sci-Fi religion.

I'll just say that Jim Harbaugh is the true king of the north.

GoT is one of the most overrated shows of all time. It is a gimmick show that relies on extreme violence, rape, incest, and unexpected character deaths to shock audiences. The characters are uninspiring and lack charisma (except for Tyrion Lannister). The politics dull the show beyong belief. I don't get the hype at all.

Now, clearly there has to be at least one very vivacious soul that liked everything once....maybe even twice....definitely once in a Yugo, the logistics nightmare aside.

Point taken though, of course. These threads tend to bring out some very obscure debates and manage to highlight the deep fractures in the sci-fi / fantasy genre.

Forgot who said it, but...

The world would be a much better place in aggregate if people could collectively learn how and when to say a) "I'm glad you like [thing that you like], it just isn't for me" and then b) "OK, that's cool"

Unless you're a fan of Michael Rosenberg's sportswriting or the Boren family, in which case you're objectively wrong and are pretty much gutter trash.

I see what you're trying to do, and while clever, I'd rather not wear a shirt or sport a banner that:

a) Refers to Michigan by a term that rival schools refer to us as. And:

b) I'd rather not have constant reminders about what OSU has done to us over the last 15 years. I'd rather not remember the countless instances of heartbreak and several instances of sheer, outright ass kickings. Especially when it does not look like things are going to get any easier anytime soon.

Not trying to neg, as I enjoy GoT too. But I would respectfully decline.

This is also an unfair comparison in that while the Lannisters and the OSU fanbase are both ruthless power-hungry factions who wear red, one of them engages in considerably more sibling-fucking than the other.
