Solid episode, but this whole season has felt like they were building to something.  I keep waiting for Ramsay Bolton to die.  It better happen soon.

I don't think it will, I think from the show runners perspective he's too good of a villain to lose until the big bads get in the frame. It's too bad though as most viewers have lost pati nice with him in a major way. It's not like he's a love to hate villain the way Roose might be, he's just an unpl wasn't watch.

  • Night's Watch losing Aemon is no-bueno.
  • As is the Red Woman wanting to sacrifice Shireen.
  • Glad Bronn's poison seems to be a red hearing.  I liked that Sand Snake scene.  I don't know why.  There was something bouncy to it that just was titillating.

Bigger topics:

Baelish and the Queen of Thornes play their trump card.  Or was it Lancel on his own?  I greatly liked the scene with Olenna and the High Sparrow.  Many vs. few philosphical debate is certainly an interesting one and a clear parallel to what is going to in Mereen.  As Dany said - she's the only one in Mereen that isn't free.

Speaking of Mereen, whoa, talk about speeding things up.

It's clear that we're surpassing some book storylines and we'll be totally through them by the end of the season.

All in all, this episode was executed soooooo much better.  Of course, it didn't have to be great to be an upgrade over last week.

I'm glad Theon didn't turn into hero and it looks like Sansa is going to be the one that saves him, not vice versa.  Go Sansa.  Seriously kick some fucking ass.  I'm wondering where Brienne is going to figure in.  Her cameo was briefer only than all but Shireen's tonight, but her inclusion reiterates that something big is gonna happen.  Yay.

Even though the show has deviated from the books in some major parts, I still rather enjoy the execution. I'm anxious to see what will happen with the Tyrion/Dany storyline.

Yep. Also there are a lot of hints about what's to come with Cersei, I think she'll burn Kings Landing to the ground. Remember all of the wildfire that's supposed to be hidden throughout the city...

His fanaticism has now brought him into conflict with two powerful families. He will learn that te power of the spiritual realm matters not vs that of the earthly realm.

I enjoyed tonight's episode. I was hoping it would show more of the Sansa/Ramsey/Theon/North plot line, but overall I liked it. I just hope Cersei doesn't get out of her predicament.

Tywin told Cersei, "I don't distrust you because you're a woman, I distrust you because you're not as smart as you think you are." You know done fucked up don't you?

Was thrilled to see Tyrion finally get to Dany... Sadly the show watchers will never get the pleasure of learning about all the turtles of the mother Rhoyne and Penny. Aemon's scene was quite awesome as well, I'm glad they threw the egg lines in there

but man was that a great episode.  The showrunners have definitely gotten better season after season of focusing on specific areas of the world for longer chunks to help each story breathe a bit.  That is so much preferred to the hopping around they had been doing in seasons 2 and even 3.  If I may say so, Cersei's actress stole the show this episode.

I'd actually say I've done admirably well in not commenting on these for this season.  I honestly try to walk a line between offering insight and comments.  Thankfully we will be leaving the books soon so my inputs will be worth less than a damn

If you want someting substantive here goes:

Friggin love that we got the full song of "The Dornishman's Wife" between this episode and one episode prior.

I actually had the first Sand Snake Scene that I didn't cringe at.

Tyrion + Dany = ??

Can anyone else give credit to Cersei this season?  I wil admit they seemed to shoehorn in her "this is why you should like me" stuff for this episode with Tommen, but I still didn't dislike it.

Was it the woman who told Sansa that if she ever needed help, she should flash a candle in the highest room of the tower . . . because, "The North remembers!"

Imagine if Ramsay Bolton had been around when someone suggested that it would be a good idea for someone to flash lanterns in the Old North Church tower before Paul Revere went off on his Midnight Ride to warn everyone that, "The British Are Coming!"

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T WATCHED:

I haven’t read the books and have no desire to, so I’m unaware of the show’s deviations from the books, but I liked this episode as much as, if not more than, any episode this season. Lots of memorable scenes . . .

Jon Snow saddling up with the Wildlings for a march beyond the wall, and getting a special weapon from Samwell Tarly

Maester Aemon Targaryen’s death scene and Samwell Tarly’s eulogy, with the added bonus of Ser Alliser Thorne warning Tarly that Tarly's losing all his friends

Stannis Baratheon and Melisandre, at the North’s version of Valley Forge, discussing the best plans to march on Winterfell, and Stannis decides to protect his daughter from a bloody ending

Samwell Tarly trying to defend Gilly from a possible rape . . . and seeing that (a) Ghost saves the day, and (b) Sam gets his first moment of special pleasure from Gilly

Jaime Lannister learning that Myrcella Baratheon, his “niece/daughter”, won’t be going home with him to King’s Landing

Bronn getting to show off his singing talents . . . and one of his judges giving him “two breasts up” for his performance, before it looks like it’s going to be Bronn’s swan song if he can’t answer the woman’s famous fairy tale question (“Who’s the fairest of them all?”) and she has to rescue him from imminent death

Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy/Reek hatching the plan that leads to the surprise appearance of Ramsay Bolton in the highest room of the tower and the skinning of the old woman who’d reminded Sansa that, “The North remembers!”

The debate between Lady Olenna Tyrell and The High Sparrow about the power of the many and the power of the few

Cersei Lannister (a) comforting her oldest surviving son, Tommen, (b) meeting with Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish at his old, blood-stained and ransacked brothel, (c) sparring with Lady Olenna Tyrell about rescuing Lady Olenna’s grandchildren from prison, (d) sparring with Margaery Tyrell in a prison cell, (e) sparring with The High Sparrow, while her cousin/lover Lancel Lannister watches and (f) finally being tossed into her own prison cell.

Tyrion Lannister proving that (a) he’s dangerous when he’s locked in chains, and (b) sometimes he needs a helping hand to break those chains

Daenerys Targaryen being disgusted by some brutal matches in the “fighting pits” just before Ser Jorah Mormont proves that he’s the new “pit master” and presents Dany with “The Gift” of Tyrion Lannister

I can picture the brainstorming sessions for this season:

Writer A:  "I think the sand snakes could be really interesting.  We should work to develop their personalities and establish a compelling back story."

"Writer B:  "Sure, we could do that.  Or we could, you know... boobs."

As a book reader, What I find interesting is that they've deviated so much from the books now, the show is truly something original. Not many "book story lines" are still intact. I now wonder if the show will influence Martin as he finishes his saga? They're certainly changing it up. Some say for the better.

I don't feel that way. Purest at heart, but I realize they can't make a show exactly like the book. The only I hate with this season is Sansa marrying The Bastard Bolten. But then again, maybe that's why they did it. To create another emotional attachment to the show. Because I think we all want to see Bolton dead. His days are numbered I think, one way or another.
