OT: Friday Open Thread about whatever

Submitted by JeepinBen on

That time of the week. Did we even have one last week? I was too busy going America all over everybody.

Anyway there's plenty of actual football talk elsewhere, from the Pac12 wussing out to the PSU fallout, I've really liked the recent either/or questions on the board, so here's some potential discussion topics for this summer Friday:

1. Mustang or Camaro? (Or Challenger for you Mopar folks. Open ended - classics, new, etc)

2. Strawberry or Grape on your PB&J?

3. Follow up to 2: Chunky or smooth PB?

4. SNL Halcyon 1 or 2? (Original cast, Belushi, Akroyd, Chevy,  etc vs. Sandler, Rock, Farley, etc)

5. Most overrated movie of the last 20 years?

Happy Friday everyone. And don't forget we're only  Days from the start of the season

The sad thing is someone paid serious money for that.

I actually have a F-Body chassis stashed in the spare bay of my parent's garage.  No power train and minus some body panels.  Frame is in perfect condition though.  The long term plan is to find a heavy duty iron block engine from a GM truck and insert it the vehicle.  Then around with a vehicle that weighs like 2700 pounds and generates 700+ HP.

Cars: I'm too f*cking old to be driving a late-model Mustang or Camaro.

I'm not old enough to be driving a 'classic' Mustang or Camaro.

Am eying a Porsche Panamera 4S v Turbo, Audi S7 (when released), E63AMG for my midlife crisis, (t-minus 3 years).  Of course, Dr/Mrs gopoohgo approves (and currently, she does not).

Go with a sedan that has a baseline model.  For example sell your wife on the Cadillac CTS, then upgrade it to CTS-V later on the purchase process.

"Look honey, I'm being reasonable and willingly getting something with four doors and a big trunk for kiddie hauling because I'm a mature parent."  Then later on be like "Can I at least have the bigger engine?".  That's how my father got his M5.  Shopped a 5 series and then got my mother to approve the engine upgrade.  It ended with:

My mother, looking at the car in the driveway:  Hey that's a totally different car.

Father: Too late, can't take it back, signed the paperwork.

Strangely related indicent in the family lore:

My grandfather had a Cadillac Eldorado new in 1959, but he purchased it when he was only sent out for donuts. He left in a 1952 Ford, so the story goes, and came back about an hour later with the Cadillac. When quizzed, he presents my grandmother with the donuts first and then explained that he was in line and looked across the street at the Cadillac dealership, and something about the car simply said "buy me", so he did - for a cool $6000 or so, or whatever the price was (apparently, you can make huge profits if you make dentures for the right city officials, which he did). He then spent several hundred more (at the time anyway) building another six feet onto the garage at the house in Rosedale Park in Detroit (it's still there too, extension and all).

That's awesome.  I had to take out a bunch of beams in our garage after my mother bought her dream car, a Silverado 2500HD.  It was basically my dad and I standing there going "Well that one doesn't seem load bearing, give it a whack with the sledgehammer and see what happens."  Garage is still there, so I guessed correctly.

  1. New Mustang, love the GT500, although I prefer the C6 Corvette.
  2. Strawberry.
  3. Smooth.
  4. Never watched a lot of SNL.
  5. Tough choice, but Pulp Fiction. It was watchable, but everyone seems to think it's something incredible and I just don't get it.

As for sandwiches, I'm about to whip up some egg salad. Love that stuff.

overrated, here are your most overrated movies of all time

1. Scarface

2. Master and Commander (I know that this may seem high for this movie, but the very fact that it is almost universally deemed at least "watchable" truly baffles me.  In the worst movie of all time category, this a close third behind Teen Wolf 2 and Caddyshack 2)

3. Forest Gump

4. Good Will Hunting - (would have you believe that guys go around having "debate fights" with other people in the bankground going "ooohhh, face!)

5. 2001 - A Space Odyssey

6. The Thin Red Line

7. The Graduate

8.  Rain Man

9. District 9

10. Gladiator

The Thin Red Line, although too long and filled with boring segments, has some highly philosophical realizations on life, death, and comradery; with an allstar cast to boot. You might want to watch it again if you have the time to spare. Still doesn't hold a candle to Apocalypse Now or Platoon as far as war movies go.

like to hear your thoughts on how Gladiator is overrated. As my favorite movie of all time, I am compelled to inquire and come to it's immediate defense.

I'm just not really sure what else you'd want in a movie.  Awesome actions scenes, intense character development, great plot.  The battle of carthage is still one of my favorite scenes of all time, so I'm just not sure in any facet how it's considered over-rated.  But you know.. that's just like.. my opinion man.

were some good action scenes and it did have a very good ending, but its sum never became anything more than its parts.  I strongtly disagree that its character development was a strong point of the movie.  I felt that all of the characters in that movie were contrivances and really lacked any depth at all.  Also, CGI in its infancy was not a pretty thing.  I thought the movie "looked" fake, it lacked authenticity.  I am not saying it was horrible, but it was certainly not a best picture (and really only one it because it was up against f#%ing Chocolat).

We'll agree to disagree on this one.

1. The ending - guy makes the ultimate sacrifice for this country/family/fellow soldiers to overthrow an evil tyrant and bring peace to the land. Not sure what else I'm missing besides for it didn't fit the typical "hollywood" ending.

2. I think J. Phoenix did an awesome job in making you hate him, and R. Crowe and his motely crue did a great job in making you love them.  Add in a BA soundtrack, and I usually well up at the end every time.

3. I admit I'm a bit of a Ridley Scott fan, so not to say that I liked the movie more because of that but i dig the guy's style, what can I say

Scott too.  Hannibal was miraculously very strong, Blade Runner is tried and true and American Gangster never got its due.  (I also heard his new effort is good, but can't think of the name).  Just did not think Gladiator lived up to its billing.  But for the record, I said that it had a strong ending, the last five minutes were the strongest part of the film.

You're right. My apologies - I misread that.

Blade Runner director's cut, if you ever get a chance to hunt that one down, really  really good.  Totally changed the ending (or rather, the final production ending was made "Hollywoodish") but the first cut's ending mirrored the film's dark overtones and was done quite well, IMO.

Well, enough banter from me - t-minus 22 minutes until I go grab a cold one. Happy Friday to all, and to all a good night.

1. Give me a Corvette or a Camaro new or old, doesn't matter to me.

2. Grape

3. Smooth

4. Ferrell, Farley, and Sandler in that order. New stuff is garbage by the way.

5. 300. It was a good action flick don't get me wrong I loved some of the fighting scenes, but it was a bit over the top.

Had a PBJ sandwhich and a ham, cheese, and mustard sandwhich for lunch earlier.

1. Hard to pick for me.  Mustand an Eleanor (1969 GT500).  Camaro if it is a 1969 Camaro SS.

2. Strawberry

3. Smooth

4. Sandler, et. al b/c I was too young for the others

5. Harry Potter movies except for Emma Watson.

1.  Mustang, all day, every day.

2. Grape no doubt.  If you must be different, then Apple.

3. Smooth, no question.

4. I've never been a huge SNL fan and haven't seen much of it, but I'll go with second gen, probably because I've seen more of their stuff.

5. Napolean Dynamite. I don't get how anyone could ever watch that, so terrible.  Not even remotely funny.

On a side note, the fiancee and I are preparing to move into our new place in the next couple weeks, so this weekend will be filled with cleaning and painting, and I can't wait.  Come on, 5 o'clock!

Leaving the office in 2.5 hours, going home to hopefully find my copy of NCAA '13, own some fools in Call of Duty, go to Express to blow some cash, get some dinner somewhere with the fiance, and then coming home to play NCAA for a few hours.

Word.

My friend works in the delivery room and said he frequently has this conversation:

Woman:  Hey what are you doing?  Are you prepping an epidural?  I told you no drugs, i'm having a natural birth.

My friend:  Well we'll just leave it over here just in case.  We don't have to use it.

Woman:  I don't want it.

*later in child birth*

Woman:  GIVE ME THE DAMN DRUGS!  NOW!!!!

For me, natural child birth ranks right up there with natural appendix removal or natural dentistry. Just because that's the way something was done for a long time doesn't mean that we shouldn't take modern medical science for a spin to see what it can do.

I don't really want to give away the location of the person hiding behind the Lampjaw character, but I think the best softball in the country this weekend is being played right here and coaches from just about every major program in the country are here. I did not want to disturb her, but she passed by me with my M cap on and said Go Blue. I congratulated her on doing a great job with her team. She seems to be very popular with the other coaches. (I changed caps so that no one would mistake me for a Michigan recruiter. Don't think that would help the cause.)

with your security mechanisms being what they are, I thought your daughter was a different age group than megangoblue deduced.

Word from her is that she's grateful for no more July/August games. She gets to have longer hair and what-not.

Edit: Now she's wavering and saying I could have been right and giving a bunch of caveats. Maybe you can let me know if they ever have a chance at facing off, since apparently I'm clueless.
