OT - Fox coverage of BCS games

Submitted by blueinwinston on
Does anyone else think the Fox coverage of the BCS games is just incredibly horrible? From the silent still shots of gatorade, tostitos, and bud light to the bad announcing to the BANDS always being mic'd...terrible. Just wanted to see if anyone else noticed. The bands thing reminds me of the SNL Cowbell skit, only substituting bands for cowbell.

it seems like they're creating their coverage based on the input of accountants and ad execs, all of whom are staring at a clock counting the seconds until they can air another commercial and collect another check.

Fox is somewhat amateurish ( though a step above BTN ). I like getting a break from Mussberger/Herbie and their very tired act. ESPN/ABC gets the BCS rights in a couple years (along with increased SEC exposure), and we'll experience the power of a broadcast monopoly.

But the one thing I give them is they do a little more with the band than the Disney companies. Yes, the Fox version is overkill, but we really dont get to see half time shows, or even band shots during normal breaks. The rest of it was genuinely awful. I don't mind fox for the nfl, but yeah, ABC/ESPN has nearly perfected college football coverage.

replay time sucked, too. how many actual plays got jobbed because we we're watching a replay or the gatorade jug?

I'm way biased, but I loved the extra band coverage. That's a huge part of college sports. I could do with less of the beer and tostitos and gatorade, and the commentary was awful, but the band stuff was fine. Anyone notice the Led Zeppelin show that former UM director jamie Nix wrote and sold to Texas? We played it four times in 2006. It was a kickass show.

I guess it can be a racket if you're good at it, and Nix was a very good arranger. You can hear MMB shows among other bands every once in a while. I played in or watched several games where our opponents played one of our shows, most often the 2004 Beatles show. I wouldn't be surprised to hear Led Zeppelin more often either. By contrast, I don't imagine you'll be hearing too many recreations of such Scott Boerma hits as "The Bobby Darrin Show", "Cirque du Soleil" or "Songs in the Key of Scotty B's Parents Generation".

I was curious about Tony Robo's absence from the college game as well. Must be hungover from wildcard weekend. I don't mind seeing the band sometime, but is it totally necessary to see them doing THE SAME THING after EVERY FUCKING FIRST DOWN?

It's true that they always showed the bands at more or less the same point in play. As a result, they were almost always doing the same cheer or song or motion. That was pretty lame. I thought there were too many shots of non-football in general. Too many band shots maybe, but alternately, i propose that Texas and OSU need more varied and cooler cheers. If it had been the MMB doing Eights, it would have been hilarious. It was lame, so people complain.

The worst moment was when that OSU player got stretchered off the field. They had a commercial after the kickoff return, then like 30 seconds after they got back due to the injury, then another one when he was being carted off the field. It was too much.

I think Fox has been criticized for TOO MUCH band action. I was for sure they had 4 microphones in the stadium. Two on the announcers and one for each band. You heard the bands more than the crowd. I like the band coverage at half, but let up on the band shots a bit. I just don't understand how a broadcast corporation who calls exactly ZERO college games during the regular season ends up with the majority of the BCS game. I'd like to have been in the conference room during that deal. BCS rep: So you're telling me you guys have never broadcast a college game? Fox rep: Yep, but we got this idea to spotlight bands and do static shots of sponsor products. BCS rep: AWESOME. Viewers will love that.

Fox Sports covers Pac 10 and Big 12 games during the regular season. The BTN is also backed by Fox and Fox announcers work the Big 10 games. The problem is that they fail to make the most out of this. Using their NFL crews instead of their college crews is a huge mistake.
