OT - The ESPYs.... Le Sigh

Submitted by MGoBender on

So, on this, one of three days a year in which there are no major four sports games going, we have the ESPYs.

I LOATHE the idea of letting people vote on awards.  People are stupid.  Voting is almost always done for a favorite and not a true winner.

First complaint: (EDIT) Chris Berman confusing me about what year plays took place (see below).

In the words of THE KNOWLEDGE: Comments commence.

The ESPYs has been good for four things:

1)  Jimmy V speech.  Bar none.

2)  The skit where Greg Oden played the piano.

3)  The "demands" set forth by Will Farrell and John C. Reilly.

4)  Michele Beadle's orange dress.

That is all.

My bad - just saw Chris Berman do a run down of top plays and I thought they were all from this year.  Fixed.

However, to your first point (and second), maybe let's be less biased (against soccer) and sexist (against women) - it won last year so those two facts clearly don't and shouldn't affect it's worthiness of an award.

relentless cheerleading of women's soccer in the media, which is beyond parody. I'll always remember the US women's team winning the sportsmen of the year award in 1999 when they won the World Cup--even though they were the FAVORITE going into the competition--but the victory was treated in the same manner as the Olympic hockey team's victory in 1980.

Regarding the goal: I have one major problem with it winning.  One thing my son-in-law has bestowed upon me while watching a few games (my grandson is a goalie) is that if he comes out to get the ball, he absolutely must get the ball.  I think it was as much a bad play by the goalie as it was a great play by the ladies.  I'd feel the same way if a football team won on a hail mary where the defender tripped and fell down 10 yards before the catch. Just my two cents.

Yeah, but then you can say that if the goalie stayed back, was she going to make the save?  It was a strong header that was well placed enough for me to say no.

But that play by the goalie wasn't anything close to someone tripping.  If anything, when you watch the replay, you can argue the goalie made the right decision and just came up short.  Literally, about an inch short.

Regardless, FAIL on me for thinking this play is even involved in this year's ESPYs.  Like everything in life, I blame it on Chris Berman.

Things of note:

Verlander up for Male Athlete - competing against LBJ, Aaron Rodgers

Best Game, which has to be the coolest award, for some reason only has 3 finalists, none of which are UTL

Matthew Stafford up for Best Comeback - for some reason Sydney Crosby is also there.

Nothing else is really that interesting, to me anyway.

Like always, the Arthur Ashe Award is the only worthwhile part of the show.

Pat Summitt is really amazing - I had no idea she had six miscarriages.  What an unbelievable person.

Any chance that we can nominate Brock Mealer for next years Jimmy V award...I know its a little late but I feel like he would make a great recipient.
