OT: Ed DeChellis leaving Penn State for Navy

Submitted by FabFiver5 on

According to ESPN, Ed DeChellis is leaving Penn State for the head coaching job at Navy. A little strange, considering DeChellis is a PSU alum, just got a contract exension in 2009 and got them back to the tourney. Does this mean even he believes you can't win at Penn State?

I think Penn State is finally beginning to take the sport of basketball seriously. They might shell out bigger money for an up and comer.

Paterno's base is like $500k.  DeChellis has gotta be leaving for a raise since they will never pay a bouncyball coach more than JoePa.

Expect another bottom feeder coach willing to make $200-300k to step in; they don't have the political will to pay a hoops coach market rate.

Paterno's shadow over the athletic department is a very, very long one and hoops (and football) will be stagnant until he's gone and the salaries in that gorup can float to market rate.

Wasn't he on the hot seat before his team squeaked into the tourney this year? And wasn't his team that squeaked into the tourney very senior heavy? And wans't his team next season expected to be terrible now that all the seniors graduated?

He's getting out while his stock his relatively high, instead of getting fired after a terrible season next year.

I mentioned this in a look-ahead to next year, but Penn State returns nothing from this year's team. They will be absolutely awful next year. My guess is DeChellis realized he'd probably get canned after this upcoming season and got the jump on it to take a job he really wanted.

They lose 4 of 5 starters as well as Battle's younger bro who when he played used a lot of possessions. The only guy who's any good that's returning is Tim Frazier. Everybody else didn't play, played little (and when they did play, weren't any good) and incoming freshman, none of whom is expected to make an immediate impact.

Everyone here in Johnson City, Tn is shocked. Ed coached here at East Tennessee St. before he left for Penn St. and still has lot's of friends here. He talked about loving it at Penn St. so nobody is sure what happened and why he's leaving. One of the local sports guys who's still great friends with him said there is more than meets the eye to this move. I have no idea what that means though. Good luck Coach DeChellis you were a class act while you were here. I wish you nothing but the best.

He would have been fired next year after PSU finishes last in the Big 10. At Navy, he'll easliy have a 10-year-career.

If he's leaving PSU despite being an alum, you can bet that it's absolute misery to work in their athletic department.
