OT - Earth Hour participation?

Submitted by brendandavis22 on
So my girlfriend is all about this earth hour (3.27.10 at 8:30pm local time) and wants us to be a part of it. Just one big problem... The hockey game will be on! I'm trying to get around it by telling her we just need to shut off the lights, not the tv but she isn't buying it. Question, are you doing it? If she holds strong I'll walk up to the bar for an hour if I have to. Who planned this thing for a Saturday night anyway? Why not a Tuesday night?

It makes lazy people feel like they're doing something effective and meaningful when, in fact, they're not. Leave the house if you have to, but don't give in to her insistence on observing EH.

Dumping her for feeling fervent about this cause is just dumb. You have a partner who cares, who is passionate, who is not some automaton who follows you around. She is her own person. Be proud. Your passion is UM sports, hers is something else. Appreciate her passion just as she probably makes sacrifices year-round for yours. But, the purpose behind this movement is to raise awareness, to to raise frustrations. Those who are conscientious about the cause do not want you to have to give up your passions for it. Pledge to do it say an hour before, or two hours before, or two hours later. Believe me, the last thing people behind this cause want is actually turning people away from the cause. Nobody wants you to give up your passion. Don't do it. Work them in together. Then work some other passions in together.

I turned on all my lights last year for that hour. The neighbors wanted to know what was up and when I told my auto worker neighbor next door he fired up a huge bonfire. He had to use gas to get it going and still be within the hour. I also had steaks for Jenny Granhom's no meat day.

The only thing worse than *wanting* to observe "earth hour"...Is being suckered into it by a woman. Actually missing a game for it? Blasphemy! I've made my wife cancel our sons b-day party over a game(well, reschedule at the last minute anyway)...Although his b-day is in late Nov. "Earth hour"...*roll eyes* Pat her on her head and give her a "maybe next year baby".

(and entire thread, for that matter) is full of win. Thank you for the many LMAOs this Friday afternoon. I will do my penance by sitting in the dark tomorrow night -- with the TV on, of course. Hey, why should this Saturday be any different?

Every light on the outside of my house was lit. I had been smoking ribs since 4, and I took them off at 8:20 and put on all the scrap oak and pine I had to get a big smoke trail. Great ribs.
