OT: Dwayne Haskins toxicology report

Submitted by dickdastardly on May 25th, 2022 at 6:22 AM

The sad news about Dwayne's passing raised many questions about why he was on the highway.

More details were just released.

Cliff notes for those who don't want to read the articles: He had an alcohol level of .20-.24% and Ketamine was found in his system. It was reported that he was looking for gasoline based on a 911 call from his wife who had been on the phone with him while he was on the highway. She was not the individual who was passed out in his car at the time.

With a bac greater than 0.2 I'm glad he didn't kill anyone else while driving drunk. With that level of alcohol in his system the story could easily have been "ex-OSU football star falls asleep while driving, crosses median, hits minivan and kills a mother and two children."

Fuck drunk drivers.

Even though it was a tragic accident, the trauma that driver may experience is immense. I had a teammate in high school who hit and killed a homeless man (who was heavily intoxicated) who rode his bike across traffic.

Although it was not the drivers fault, at 16 it was a lot for him. He fell into a severe depression and led to heavy pain killer use. He sadly took his own life his senior year.

Even though the driver in this situation is not at fault, I hope they can get the support they may need because tragically, this is probably something they will be grappling with for a long time; perhaps the rest of their life.

Still a sad story, but less sad than if he'd killed some innocent driver instead, while driving around that fucked up.  I feel terrible for his wife, who had to have been feeling completely helpless knowing this was unfolding with nothing she could do but call 911.

What an asshole.  Driving around over 0.1% is bad, over 0.2% is beyond asinine.  We're all lucky as hell he is the only one who died because he could have killed any number of people that fucking drunk.  I feel bad for his wife, and for the unfortunate person whose car he stumbled in front of.

Guys. Yeah - drunk driving is bad, but the only thing he ultimately did was die as a pedestrian.  Stop what-iffing bad scenarios had he hit someone else. He didn’t, and he died.

I got negged by stating that it seemed odd for a professional athlete to get hit crossing a road.  This makes more sense.  Very sad.

This might get negged, but we all learn from a very young age the dangerous effects of drugs, alcohol, etc. I'm not saying he and his family deserve that ending - I feel for his family - but there are a lot sadder things that happen in the world than a guy who has the world on a silver platter and throws it all away.

I feel a whole lot more empathy for the innocent people hit by drunk drivers, the innocent people caught in gang crossfire, and the children, teachers, and families of the Texas elementary school yesterday.

Haskins threw his life away. Nobody made that choice for him.

Mind-blowing to me how upvoted this comment is.

He didn't "throw it all away".  He was drunk and got hit by a car.  Sometimes people get drunk.  Sometimes people use drugs.  A lot of times people do either or both to help them cope with something else (i.e., self-medication).

I expect better from this blog's readership but I guess that's my mistake.  The holier-than-thou attitude of this comment is disgusting.  But I've been around the blog long enough to know that for some folks, "holier than thou" is a treasured part of their identity.

Good context and background.  Still a tragedy but also helps explain how and why he was walking across that freeway in the middle of the night

My therapist (er, one of them) told me something interesting about addiction. He said the opposite of addiction is connection. Sadly in these times it's become more and more difficult to actually have real friends to connect with. I can only imagine being a young star like that with gobs of cash, it can probably be really easy to go down some dark roads, and even harder to find true friends who care about you as a person and not just because you're famous. I've definitely experienced the feeling of being surrounded by people yet still feeling alone and isolated. It's actually worse than literally being alone. And I'm lucky as shit to have had the right people intervene at just the right times.

RIP - nobody should die that young

Why would he have used ketamine? Serious question. It wasn't a thing when I was at the peak of my drug use. Without googling, I seem to recall it has a post-workout/recovery use (aside from other *recreational* uses). Can anyone shed some light on this?

Magnus nailed it.  Sad for a lot of folks, but this was Haskins own doing.

I've had booze impact me because of people around me having drinking problems.  It is sad, difficult, etc.

All you can say after this, aside from the obvious of what happened is a tragedy, is that you have to be grateful he didn't inadvertently get anyone else killed.

I'm not here to dance on the young man's grave. Not at all. But given what we know now, this story could've just as easily become a situation where he winds up driving on the wrong side of the road and accidentally slams into another car, killing a mother, two children, and putting the father in the ICU. Even with just that BAC alone, and now you're introducing drugs to the mix.

What happened was awful. There's no sugarcoating that. But if there is any silver lining to this, its that Haskins is the only one who died. This could've been so much worse.

I was wondering how in hell somebody could manage to actually run out of gas. It's not like he was driving some 20-year old beater with a faulty gas gauge—I'm sure he was driving some newish vehicle that cost more than my first house.

Now I know the answer.

Bad decisions yield bad results. Sad for his family but grateful he didn’t kill anybody else with his terrible decisions. Worth noting that Harbaugh has a DUI as well and I am not giving him a free pass. Thankfully nobody was injured in his case and it was an isolated incident. Haskins and so, so, so, many are not that lucky. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t be high and drive, period.

I may have a little bit different perspective on this. Several years ago, my nephew was in an accident while driving drunk and was killed. He had just graduated from high school a month earlier and on his way to a graduation celebration. He was a great athlete and honor student and had exciting plans for his life and a bright, bright future. This tragedy and the aftermath was something I hope no one would ever have to go through, and it changed all of us.

At the time, there was plenty of talk on social media and in the news about blame and fault. His parents and family were left to pick up the pieces and endure the opinions and observations of people who didn’t know them. This was torture for all of us. I can’t even describe how the guilt and grief affected his parents, still affects them.

I am saying all of this in hopes that we measure our words carefully. Dwayne’s family and friends are still processing this tragedy. Who are we helping with our search for condemnation? There will be lessons from this, but that can happen in its own time. Let’s let his family grieve.
