OT: "Don't Look Up" on Netflix

No spoilers, and I apologize if this isn't thread-worthy, but I nearly died when this exchange happened:

Jonah Hill's Character: "I'm sorry, did you say Michigan State?"

Dr. Oglethorpe: "Exactly. They have an excellent astronomy department."

Jonah Hill's Character: "Come on, bro."

She’s not bad on the eyes, but her personality annoyed me when she first got big. Attention seemed to follow her - in a forced manner. I tend to avoid films with her now.

The actress who I genuinely don’t find attractive - even before I found out she’s a bit out there - is Shailene Woodley (Aaron Rodger’s girl.) I just finished the 1st season of Big Little Lies though and she can certainly act.

She won best supporting actor for her role in David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook, and she stole the movie with her performance in it, especially her makeup scene with Bradley Cooper at the end of the film, one of my favorites.

Jennifer is a very down to earth person and character on film, which makes her the perfect foil in her role in Don't Look Up as an MSU phd astronomy student. She takes no shit and knows how to deliver a line in character and off-screen. Very sexy woman.

I thoroughly enjoyed this dark parody comedy. The film combines a lot of bows to other apocalyptic dramas including Dr Strangelove and Network.

Sparty did discover a new isotope:

Forged at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at MSU, or NSCL, this isotope is so unstable, it falls apart before scientists can measure it directly. Yet this isotope that isn’t keen on existing can help researchers better understand how the atoms that define our existence are made.

Try finding one that doesn’t fall apart like your D against Ohio State!  Hey-ooooooh!

It was funny 10--15 years ago when Tina Fey did the Sarah Palin bit where they litterally had her read a xscript of an interview. It was harmless at the time b/c Palin was just an idiot that had no chance.

after it went from harmless to dangerous in 2016 - I don't enjoy walking into autocracy laughing as we hand this situation off to our kids

I had to take a "basic science elective" as an engineering student in Michigan. This would have happened in 1985. I asked if I could take astronomy. My guidance counselor laughed. "No, a real science, not astronomy or psychology."

I ended up taking "Practical Botany" instead. It was an easy A, having grown up in a farming community. Still not sure why astronomy didn't count as "science."

I started watching it; my wife mentioned this movie just before leaving for Chicago to visit her family.

Unrelated, but this quote is in the opening scene:

I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather.  Not screaming in terror like his passengers.  ~ Jack Handey
