OT: Detroit Lions make a trade to replace Suh

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

Looks like the Detroit Lions traded with the Baltimore Ravens for Haloti Ngata.

No news on what they traded to get him but getting a two time All Pro player to replace Suh makes the sting slightly less. Also likely that this signals the move from a 4-3 with Suh to a 3-4 considering that 4 of the top 5 Lions' DL are free agents. Lions have their top 5 linebackers under contract as well as their top DE's.

I don't like giving up multiple picks at a time, but considering the Lions may have 0 players from their 2010-2011 draft classes (1 if they resign Nick F) I suppose it is a solid move.

5th and 7th round draft picks don't make the roster often.  Ngata has actually been to a Super Bowl and knows what it takes to win.  They need to make a few trades because the "window" for getting to the Super Bowl with CJ and Stafford won't be open forever.

I still think losing Suh will be a positive.  He gives the media fuel for the "Dirty Detroit Lions" narrative that so many lazy "journalists" like to use instead of actually doing any real work.  Whether or not the refs pay attention to the media, Suh's presence ended up producing a lot more scrutiny from refs for the Lions.  I won't get into blaming officials, but it makes sense that getting less penalties called could result in more victories.

Most of all, Suh was a walking "cap disaster."  He is a great player, but not worth the money it would cost to keep him when CJ and Stafford are already getting paid so much.  I like seeing him replaced by a proven winner who costs a lot less money.

It's why he's my favorite Lions 1st round pick since Johnson. Suh was easy (McCoy would have been fine, too). Stafford was a must draft just because it was pre-rookie cap, he was a QB & we needed one. Johnson could have easily been passed on due to past WR busts but we took an absolute can't miss guy that is humble at a position of divas, etc. Not many Lion 1st rounders to like in the last 20 yrs but I really wanted Ansah where we took him for the reasons you stated & more. Another physical freak that isn't an attention seeker, plays to the whistle, was still learning the sport & could play in any defensive system.

This almost makes me think we got the good end of this transaction. There shouldn't be much of a decrease at the position.

It's a great move that fills a major need. He's got some years of Nader his belt, but the Lions just need to get a couple productive years out of him.

Mayhew would have screwed up a 4th and 5th rounder anyway.

Likely will depend on whether the Lions sign another high quality DT in free agency. Rumors running around that they are in serious talks to bring back Fairley. That would still mean they only have two DL's on their roster so even if they use a 1st or 2nd rounder on a DT, will you be able to run a 4-3 with only three high caliber DT's?

Yeah there is this tweet: https://mobile.twitter.com/RobertKlemko/status/574938745897533441 And this one: https://mobile.twitter.com/RobertKlemko/status/574940728641613824 But yeah haloti is great both as a player and guy but got outplayed by Brandon Williams this year and he wasn't going to take a pay cut so happy to get a 4th and 5th rather than just cutting him. Good trade for both teams.

Ngata was once a top 5 DL (DE or DT) but those teams just seem to know when to get rid of guys. I'll admit it's better then I thought we'd do in replacing Suh but it's still an aging player that has quickly gone from great to good. I don't know how fast he'll get to above average, average, etc. He's 31, IIRC. Not too old by any means but the Ravens used him everywhere for so long that I'm not sure how much he has left. He was always on the field when healthy, at DT or DE.

but I watched more Harbaugh bros the last two years than the Lions, have family that lives in Baltimore (became huge Ravens fans) & have heard out the general fan base. So: visual "data" from myself and others. As I said, it seems more a "gas in the tank" & injury thing more than ability. The Ravens played him everywhere but QB since they drafted him ha.

To properly describe the inept regimes of Millen and his prodigy Mayhew would take much more time than we have in this thread. The Lions will still be the Lions until the Ford ownership ends...period. That means Jr., his cousins, sister etc. You think Illitch would have put up with this shit for 50 years? Jim Hackett for Lions GM...after he replaces Red and signs Harbaugh to his lifetime deal.

They just brought in a 5 time pro bowler that our DC has experience with a couple years ago.

I'm thinking that this will be a good move, and I trust the new Bill Ford Jr many times over William Clay Ford. He actually seems to know what he's doing.
