OT - Awful Announcing

Submitted by canzior on

Was it just me or was Phil Simms awful (again)?  Twitter was eating him alive and even Chris Cooley (former Redskin) watched the game on mute.  Who else has been this bad?  During the season I was ear-raped by Brock Huard, twice in a row, Spielman is up and down through a broadcast, and I absolutely refuse to listen to Pam Ward.  And Blackledge is pretty meh too

Breaks down plays really well and doesn't slurp on guys based on reputation but instead based on their performance. Surprised how often I find myself enjoying his commentary on SNF.

What are you talking about doesn't slurp?  He was all out on Team Peyton this entire season every chance the guy had.  Got right up on that soap box and decried everyone for saying he's on the downslope/should retire even though his numbers and physical tools have largely passed him by.

Agree 1000% percent. Unlike the other commentators who only talk about where the ball is and where it's going, Collinsworth often talks about line play, blocking, and other aspects that the casual viewer would often miss. I appreciate that.

"That's a ball he should have caught" "What a pretty throw!" I don't appreciate that.

I used to dislike Collinsworth because I thought he came off like a jerk and was sort of negative all the time. But honestly he just diagnoses plays so fast and tells you exactly who screwed up and how that allowed the play to be successful. Now I don't mind his general tone because I appreciate his substance way more.

the entire Superbowl broadcast was awful. the commercial breaks were too often and too long, halftime was too long, the game was boring and the announcing crew sucked. it seems every year the breaks just get longer and longer because they want b to make more money off selling commercials. CBS thinks they can just hold the audience hostage for 5 hours because people are too stupid to do anything else on Superbowl Sunday, but if it keeps going this way I might just find something else to do on Superbowl Sunday.

How many announcers do people like? I just assume I won't like whoever is doing the game because 90% of them are atrocious and don't seem to do basic research. I mean, every basketball announcer talks about Beilein and the 1-3-1 as a staple when he has never used it as the primary defense while he's been at Michigan.

Granted, when your job forces you to talk ad lib for 2-3 hours straight, you're probably going to say some dumb shit.

Simms.  For me he is one of the least egregious announcers out there.

When I saw Cam Newton decide not to dive for the ball after he fumbled it, I was thinking, why not go for it?  Phil then said that Cam basically mailed it in on that play.

So...I like the announcer who thinks like I do.

I can't stand Sims, and it wasn't only from yesterday's broadcast.  He has preconceived notions and as to how things should be and announces accordingly.  I've seen him become contentious with other annoucers he works with.  I have no idea why they retain him.

I get where those questioning him not diving on the ball are coming from but at that point you had a qb with a bad shoulder who is coached to not get involved in a pile, to not attempt tackles on an INT because you can't risk an injury to your starting QB in the NFL. As for worst play by play people, is it just assumed we mean besides Brandy?

Almost no commentary on Newton not trying to recover his own fumble.  No commentary whatever on Ted Ginn jumping out of bounds when between 5 and 15 additional yards were available for the price of a hit.  No note that the long punt return was preceded by an uncalled interference on Carolina. I thougt the call on the first Cotchery drop was correct and there was no note that the second drop was a horrible drop.   It was as if they were watching something wholly different than I was.

If Cotchery and Ginn make their catches and runs/Newton doesn't throw to Tacopants/Newton recoverys his own fumble. Carolina may well win.

I agree with all your points, but Carolina was not going to win this.  Once it bacame clear that Denver's D was underrated in terms of being able to keep Newton's running in check and blanket-covering Carolina's recievers at the same time, it was over.

We all knew that Carolina goes as Newton goes.  We just thought that Denver would not have an answer for Newton (because nobody else did all year).  But they did.

Phillips is a genius.  He proved that this game and in the AFC Championship game.

No commentary (besides one mention in the first half about some footwear changes) about that horrible tuff shape while players were slipping and sliding all over. Protect the Shield and don't mention that the turf wasn't fit for a high school game much less the superbowl.

This game is why I like college football so much more than pro football, even if it is not for "pure" reasons.

The NFL defenses are too good.  The game has no flow, it's just hike the ball and bail out.

Compare this year's Super Bowl with this year's CFB National Championship game.  The Super Bowl was unwatchable.  I wanted it to just be over already in the 3rd quarter.  I wanted the CFB NC to go into 3 overtimes.

Yes I know that the NFL has far superior athletes at the pinnacle of their craft, but they need some rule changes to open up the flow of the game.  It's becoming like Men's Tennis where there is no game to watch, just 120 mph serves.  The NFL is just hike and get rid of the ball.

I think Kevin Harlan is the best play-by-play in any sport. I think Gus Johnson is pretty good as well. I wish Nantz and Joe Buck jump off a cliff together so we don't have to hear them again.

My personal favorite among Simms moments in the game came right after Denver ran it on 3rd and 8 or 9 play and managed a few yards.

After the play ended, Simms said, "I think they are going to run it there."

Not sure what went on in the booth or in his head, but that was spectacular analysis indeed.

I do not know about you guys, but I think Brandon Marshall when he retires is going to be one of the best color commentators in the league. Watch Inside the NFL on Showtime, and tell me you are not blown away by his poise, vocal composure, and inside knowledge.

He has repaired his image, and will be a dominant force for a 6 more years in the NFL. But once its time to hang em up, he will be right there. Adam Scheich is also outstanding. The whole show is great besides Boomer and Simms riding "The Sherrif" d. Ed reed is on it on occasion.

I didn't think Phil Seeeems was as terrible as he was during the Conference title game but still bad.

Ben Stein is more exciting than Jim Nantz. Hello friends

Sports announcers are like referees--if they do a good job, nobody really notices them but if they screw up, everybody does. Broadcast enough games and you'll ensure you're despised by most fanbases. Every now and then there is a Keith Jackson or Gus Johnson who everybody loves. But for the most part it seems like a thankless job.

TRUE colors during and after the game. Denver seriously man handled him all game and he couldn't take it. If you watch that game again closely he looked spent and tired the whole game. I personally think he was scared of Denver and that D after the game got going.

He didn't sell out on that play, the D throttled Stewart all day. If you watch again Cam was pouting and complaining like a lite kid all game, one time after he was popped in the end zone he goes off on a tirade and basically cries. You see him on the sideline pouting and that's not to mention what he did in the press conference.

Give Denver credit as they could be the best D ever as they beat Big Ben, Brady and Cam the MVP and #1 Offense in a 3 week period! 13 sacks and over 50 hits and only have up 1 passing TD in those games.

Cam got what he deserved and showed his true colors again. Great winner but a horrible loser, Cam should sit back and watch some of the more mature QB's sit back and take there take there punishment on the stage after gloating for weeks and Dabbing and basically telling everyone how good u are!

Congrats Denver !!

I'll never forget Phil Simms saying early in the fourth quarter of the AFC championship game that the missed PAT wasn't effecting the game. Idiot.
