OT- AMC's Turn

Submitted by NFG on
I know I'm in the minority with watching Turn over GOT, but was wondering what others think of the show and if they think it'll be renewed? IMO, the series has had a solid past five episodes and I love the history aspect. Hope to see it after TWD.

I still watch The Walking Dead, but man, the people behind that show were close to getting me to stop watching it. The last season is pretty boring, but it did end well and I will continue to watch.

As mentioned below the culper story basically starts at Washington's defeat in new York and ends after Arnold's defection (sorry, spoiler alert for those of you fell asleep in American history). I think that and the way they set up Tallmadge v Andre for Season 2 lends itself to 4 seasons max. Any more and they'll have to start psuedo history revisionism

I've been watching Turn and GoT. Turn has been solid, I'd like to see them have a second season. I didn't watch tonight's episode yet but I hope it ends great.

Turn is great. Simko is a douchey over the top character that the show could do without but overall I want a season 2. If they can make 900 seasons of law and order Turn should get 4 or 5.

I am guessing Law and Order has a different, broader target audience. I hope Turn gets additional seasons.

No one in TV seems to understand niche marketing any more. It seems to all be about broadening sales rather than deepening brand loyalty. Hmmm  ....

I think this is only semi-OT. Craig Silverstien, the showrunner/creator of Turn is a Wolverine. I believe Turn is the only show currently on TV run by a UofM grad.

As a history buff, the first 2 episodes were dry. I did some independant research on Woodahl and the clan, which kept my interest. I committed to all 6 episodes. So far it has been historically accurate save the romance with Anna but it is plausable. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys history. Simcoe is a little over the top but his portrail may be accurate.

I should start watching these shows that have been posted as the last two on the board, would definitely be more entertaining than watching the Tigers bullpen get shelled and continue to blow games.

The full five seasons of The Wire is Amazon Prime so I've finally had a chance to watch the show. It's fantastic. Outside of Walter White, Bubbles and Omar are probably my favorite characters ever.

Turn is a good show. More people should watch it if you are not a TV snob. Great writing solid acting. It's about Americas first spy ring during the revolutionary war for those who are wondering. It does start slow, but it picks up around the 4 episode.

TURN is not OT, especially when you consider its depiction of the Battles of Trenton and Princeton in which Washington executes a zone-read to perfection. After a Christmas Day sneak attack on the Hessians in Trenton, the rebels learn that Cornwallis will be coming down from Princeton. Washington hangs tough in Trenton to see which route Cornwallis tries to cut off, uses misdirection by stationing a handful of men on the banks of a creek overnight, then runs around the end to rout Princeton which Cornwallis had just left largely undefended. If you look at a map of these battles, it will look like an MGo-Pictured-Page.

I watched one episode because I thought Dennis from It's Always Sunny was on the show. It wasn't Dennis so I thought it sucked.

I have all of the Turn episodes recorded, but I haven't had time to watch them.  So, I'm not helpful for this thread, other than to say that I enjoy the historical aspect of the show.  I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it should be entertaining to me, at the very least.

My problem with Turn is that, with the exception of the last episode or two, all conflicts in the show seem to get resolved within the episode they're presented in. That and the special effects are difficult to watch after having just seen GoT. If I wasn't such a history buff, I don't know if I'd keep watching it. With that said, I'm glad AMC is taking a chance on a show that takes place prior to the 20th Century.

I was really hopeful for Turn - so hard to find any American Revolution period entertainment, let alone a quality series.  I think it started off quite strong but went downhill even faster.  I gave up on it two weeks ago.  Too much drama, over-the-top characters, and not enough about, you know, the revolution and the historical period.

I might watch the rest of the season at some point and do still withhold my final judgement.  Sort of.

And have the others on my DVR. Slow moving and I have considered giving it up but I'll finish the season out. Anna Strong...DAMN!

Turn is solid and has a nice historical take, but it is not nearly as fun as Sleepy Hollow, which I thought was going to be complete crap, and was actually a very entertaining 13 episodes.  I also liked the american revolution with a twist that the show excelled at.  I would agree with the fact that more people should watch Turn though.  I wish Hannibal was being watched by more people, because I think that show is the best thing on TV, and I really enjoy Game of Thrones, but this season of Hannibal was absolutely epic.

I hear you, my top 3 shows are Hannibal, person of interest and game of thrones. My only beef with game of thrones is that it has too many characters I don't care about. Ygritte,Jon,Sam,gilly,Ramsey Bolton, Stannis. The show is expertly made and written though, so even when those characters are on the scene, it's usually not too bad. The only character in Hannibal I didn't care for was Alana bloom, and that was more in the second season.

Yeah, Hannibal defintely has that in its favor, in terms of not having some boring/horrible characters.

GoT obviously has to cover a lot of different plots/storylines so inevitably there are going to be some characters that just take away from the show.

In Hannibal, it seems like at least one of Will, Jack, or Hannibal is in every scene, and they're all good characters.

I'm just surprised a show like it is on NBC, can't remember the last time I would rate a show on one of the major networks as one of the best on air.

and I want to like it. Maybe I am dumb, but I have some trouble following the plot and understanding the motives of different characters. It must be me, because I am having the same trouble following The Amerikans and 24. BTW, I've been wondering if there is a relation to the recent book, Washington's Spies: The Story of America's First Spy Ring, or if they are coincidental.

Wolverine In Exile

June 9th, 2014 at 6:36 PM ^

Turn uses that book as source material for the show. I like it- its not over cgi'd the drama is relatively historically accurate, and I like the character interplay. Its a lot of point counterpoint which was the nature of warfare at that time. In addition, we are probably spoiled in terms of what to expect from intelligence operations what was considered earth breaking Intel then is assumed to be known now in the age of NSA wiretaps and spy satellites. I think the series picks up pace nicely after the introduction of major Andre. I'm hoping for at least a three season run because I want to see how they treat the entire Benedict Arnold story- that and Trenton were the Cupper ring's two biggest contributions to the war. Amazingly the info we have on the Culper ring wasn't really known until the mid-20th century. And we still don't know for sure who Agent 355 was. (Read a history book). The culper story really illustrates how Washington was ahead of his contemporaries and that he really was a key figure in defeating the British.

I have not seen the season finale yet (tonight I will), but do like the show. That said, it's not a show I come home and can't wait to see like Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. Turn is good thus far and still has me interested. I'm worried, however, that it won't last long. It's well made though, but if it does get canceled eventually, I won't terribly miss it like I will when Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire end.

How was the 4th season of Boardwalk Empire?

I saw the first two episodes and haven't finished yet.

I almost gave up on the show during the third season, which was painful to watch at times, before the final two or three episodes where it ended strong.
