I agree with the weed thing, half the kids are doing it and they're not getting suspended from classes or jobs or anything else.  Still against team rules so make them run stairs and spend a few Sunday evenings at the local hospital volunteering.

The guns though, get rid of that shit in college fellas.  No need for that

Actual "South Bend" is bad, but there are pretty obvious differences between the good parts and bad parts. The area ND is in is nice, especially toward Granger/Mishawaka.

There's so many state and local laws it's hard to say. Michigan for example requires both handgun registration for ownership and a CPL to keep a loaded gun in your vehicle. Other places don't have registries and have constitutional carry where there's no CPL licenses at all. Others are somewhere in between on the spectrum.

Didn't know that about Kettering, but I imagine that's a strong outlier.  Certainly not against proper use of firearms.  It just seems that including guns as part of the Friday night party isn't and doesn't need to be any part of the college experience.  I think you're going out and looking to include that, and bringing on a lot of trouble on yourself if you do that.  Have a ball guys, it's college, leave the guns behind.

The motor vehicle exception is a legal rule in the US which allows the search of a vehicle without the search warrant normally required by the 4th Amend. to the Constitution.

The motor vehicle exception allows an officer to search a vehicle without a search warrant as long as he or she has probable cause to believe that evidence or contraband is located in the vehicle

The dog alerting on the car is all the officer needs to search the vehicle without a warrant.  And because drugs can/ are hidden in the tiniest and weirdest places, the entire vehicle and contents can be searched.

Yeah, If I had a nickel for everytime I got told that I reeked of pot every time I was pulled over, or stopped on foot by a law enforcement type I could buy a decent size bag of beasters with it.

Seriously though. I've never driven while high. I don't even like to leave my house while high. Yet from 15 to 29 that seemed to be my number one offense to law enforcement "smelling like pot". Even when I stopped smoking at 24 "smelling like pot" was still their bread and butter.

If you say no and they search and don't find anything, you can have the officer prosecuted for unjust search. Likewise, if they do find something without a warrant, a good lawyer can get you off simply by saying, "What was your probable cause? What, you THOUGHT you smelled drugs?" That's why many smokers still burn incense - if it's potent, the cop has no case in saying he smelled marijuana.

A cop claiming to smell weed creates probable cause. And if they don't find anything, you don't have a chance of suing successfully. That would be what is called a Bivens action, and officers have qualified immunity as long as they were following established protocols.

Hand guns are also legal assuming you're not a felon. BUT unlike a shotgun or rifle you have to register your handgun. Which is pretty easy if you buy the gun legally. Cannabis and a gun is a problem, especially in Indiana. Throw in an unregistered handgun and it's big trouble.

Doesn't display any certainty to me.  And the way they were using the firearms was illegal.  My point isn't political, I'd say the same thing if they were carrying katana swords or nunchucks or minor explosives (all of which are legal in most areas) - it's not needed on a Friday night in college.  If you're bringing that, you're choosing to pull that into your life and looking for that kind of trouble.  Missing a great time

Firearms are for certian types of entertainment or tasks (target shooting, hunting, personal defense) - and should never be mixed with mind altering substances. If you're not actively doing one of those things, or you're using mind altering substances (including alcohol), leave your firearm at home.
