OT: '17-'18 Depth Chart: Version 2 ("Just Something To Look At Edition")

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Notes:

  1. I'm not ready to let him go. I'm not taking him off. I don't care what you say. Until there's an announcement...he stays.
  2. Same for Mo Hurst.
  3. I don't know the EE freshman, so I can't really predict who's going to play and who isn't. It's November of the year before...I really don't care at this point.
  4. I realize this is Michigan-related and technically not "OT" - but it's still way too far away to be ON topic, IMO...just some fantasy to take your mind off of poor officiating which is the only topic. (By "poor" I mean absolute dog shit, worst ever, sparking legit conspiracy theories type officiating)
  5. I realize we're likely going to have 1-2 QBs transfer.
  6. I will try and go back and update this throughout the year to keep it as current as possible.

And this team will be a contender again.

Rivals at home, QB in his 2nd year, elite WR prospects, depth on the OL (albeit young depth), another NG who should be an elite prospect, and the secondary is a lot better with Clark coming back.

I realize Peppers is the longest of long shots and we REALLY need Hurst as well...but they stay unless they leave.

I do worry about the scheme on defense with this group a little bit. IMO, Lewis' ability changes the complexion of this entire defense because he simply shuts his man down. Lavert is going to be awesome, but we can't ask him to be JD in his true sophomore year.

Oh, but according to idiotic buckeye fans, UM will be bad next year and the game with OSU will go back to being a 20+ point victory for them (I saw that on Twitter countless time). Sorry to disappoint, OSU fans, but UM recruits elite players, too.

I'm not worried about next year, I think we can be very good and in the hunt again. But your OP doesn't really line up with this comment.

Hard to see depth at OL, especially since Newsome is totally up in the air. That leaves Cole as the only one with any experience (JBB and Kugler maybe had one start each this year?) and a distinct possibility of playing freshmen. I'll reserve judgment until Spring/Fall but the caveat "young depth" is sugar coating the uncertainty with this position group.

The secondary is "better with Clark" than without but won't be better than this year. I could see our young WR prospects turning out a plus but as of today seems like another group that takes a step back. We will like what we see in 2017 but our starting DBs and WRs will be hard to replace. Realistically, Peppers is gone; Hurst likely as well.

I do agree that having MSU/OSU at home is huge and really look forward to seeing the development from Gary and Speight. It's not that I'm even concerned about our ability to compete, just reacting to what I see on your depth chart versus what this comment says.

OL performance for the most part improves with growth (i.e. size & weight) and experience playing together as a unit, especially in regard to run blocking. The higher rated OL recruits are generally the bigger ones. To that end, M has its eyes on some big targets in this next class that frankly have potential to contribute as true Freshmen (based on sheer bulk), especially if they enroll early:

Isaiah Wilson 5* OT 6-7 350
Tedarrell Slaton 4* OG 6-4.5 340
Cesar Ruiz 4* OC 6-3 315
Austin Deculus 4* OT 6-6 331 -> flip from LSU
Chuck Filiaga 4* OT 6-6 335

If M can bag 3 of these 5 (say, Wilson, Ruiz & Filiaga), it would do a lot to firm up the OL IMHO. Wilson & Filiaga are already Jake Long/Taylor Lewan-sized. I know it may sound crazy to assume true Freshman starting at OL, but it's not uncommon to see LSU do it because they have hogs like these running around the bayous year-in and year-out.

Already commited but likely to RS (based on size) are:

Kai-Leon Herbert 4* OT 6-5 284
JaRaymond Hall 4* OT 6-5 282
Andrew Stueber 3* OT 6-6 285
Joel Honigford 3* OT 6-6 278

Getting back to the experience aspect, my greatest concern in regard to that is the return of Tim Drevno as OC, which will be important for the sake of continuity.

we'll start 6 seniors. That's a lot of youth and new players, especially across the line and on defense. Not to mention we play 3 of the 4 toughest games on the road, and we mostly have cupcakes like Rutgets and Michigan State at home.

I wouldn't be surprised with a rebuilding year like last years Florida State. 10-3/9-4

to get ten wins next year and beat our rivals. Nine is probably the reasonable over/under, with eight being completely possible.  Definitely a bit of a rebuild year and very tough schedule.  Florida, @PSU, @Wisconsin and home OSU seem like coin flips at best. To get two of those and win the rest would be outstanding.

Offensive line will be a huge question mark. No starting WR's returning except for slot, which didn't get much work this season. I don't know how you see this team as a contender. Definitely not suggesting that this team can't be a contender, but I'm just being a realist. A huge number of important seniors will be departing. It's a completely new locker room. No one knows who the leaders will be or if there will even be any leaders that establish themselves. The secondary gets a makeover. The only position group I see that could maybe be as good as this years is the D-Line.

With the Florida game week 1 I see 3-4 losses for this team. You can't expect a team full of youngsters to immediately be a contender in the CFP. Too many questions still.

Ohio state seems to be able to do it every single year, so why can't we? I hope I'm wrong.

If as many Red Shirts were not burned and those freshmen weren't in the rotation and get real playing time this year, I'd be far more worried. There were plenty of good contributions from true freshmen this year which will come in handy next year and further down the road.

This is a great thread to remind people of the "Useful Stuff" tab on the top. It includes depth chart by class, 2017 Recruiting Board, and Unofficial Two deep. Also not as relevant but still super important: Where to eat in Ann Arbor.

I hate to say bad about the site that I mod, but most folks never reference that tab - just look at the number of times people have said a certain thread should be in the HOF not realizing that they could add it themselves if they so desired, hence the words "user-curated". Same thing with the depth charts to a certain extent, but depth chart threads generate some good debate (well, usually), so they generally get to stay.

I just find it amusing that the only time that tab actually gets referenced right away in threads is when people start threads about where to eat. Suddenly, it is indeed useful.

Didn't Harbaugh say he would apply for a 6th year for him? I think he could push for the starting job if he's healthy, and I understand that's a big if. How confident are we that Clark gets a 6th year? I thought he played too many games this year.

I actually don't have him because this is copy and pasted from earlier in the year BEFORE the comments on Drake were made.

I removed the guys who decommitted and added guys like Jaylen Kelly-Powell who were not included on version 1.

That said, I'll add certainly add Drake if there is validity to the comments made earlier in the year.

I wouldn't want nor ask you to give names...but looking, how many transfers to you feel solid on?

I'm actually really sad thinking about this group of seniors leaving. They were freshmen when I finally came around to caring about Michigan football. Now I'm the freshman! Long live J Booty, the Supreme Taco, etc. Go wreck the NFL.
