OSU's recruiting class

Submitted by amk7 on
so i was looking through the top 25 teams in the rivals rankings, and was mildly surprised (but ultimately excited) to see osu barely in the top 25. maybe its a down year, maybe they suck, but their 16 recruit class doesnt really seem that great to me. thoughts?

OSU didn't have room for a big recruiting class this year, but they filled some needs and still have a shot at some major talent like Henderson (especially if Sunshine Pete heads to Seattle).

to my knowledge many OSU fans feel that they are going to close strong. i was very surprised about OSU not getting any one of Joyner, Latwan, and Floyd, but it is good news for us.

I think that ship sailed today when they lost all the head-to-heads. OSU seems more hopeful than optimistic about Hicks, so even if they sign Henderson, this is still a weak OSU class to me. I only wish them the worst of luck going forward.

Lemming, from what I could tell, just yawned and said, "No surprise." I just presumed that I was way out of the OSU-WVU recruiting loop. Which I am.

a Michigan fan I generally don't share the same sentiment on this topic. I always want all the major talent to go to Mich, obviously, after that I hope they go to a big 10 team somewhere. I have read many times where people have said they hope Floyd, Gholston, etc go to OOC teams. I like seeing the Big 10 drag in the big names and I like to see our team play against the best. Maybe it is just me but I don't want the rest of the league to get worse but I want us to get better. I hate seeing all the talent pick Bama, Florida, and USC all the time. Lets see more big 10 hats on those tables!

OSU's class ranking is lower this year due to fewer prospects they can sign. We're going to be hit worse next year because as of now it looks like we have 14 open scholarships. I wouldn't be surprised to see Michigan be right outside the top 25 next year.

By signing a full class (25+) this year, that should put us right around the 85 scholarship limit for 2010. Since we only lose roughly a dozen players to graduation, and probably a few more thru attrition, 14 may not be too far from the reality of what we can sign next year. It will probably be a little higher, but I doubt that it will be a full class of 25.

There is always attrition, especially in this era of short attention spans and the never-ending quest for immediate playing time. The internet/information era has made it easier for kids to decide they "aren't a good fit" and transfer. Also, transferring "down" to the MAC doesn't carry the stigma it once did, and a player's liklihood of getting on TV in a conference like the MAC is a lot higher than it was even fifteen years ago. I would be willing to bet that next year's class ends up somewhere between 20-25.

The upside to that is we will have full (approx 25) Freshman-Sophomore classes next year coming up and gaining experience. It is hard to see it sometimes but there are a lot of promising players on the roster now that have yet to see the field, but should in the next couple of years. OSU is in the opposite position in that their current roster is weighted more toward Juniors and Seniors, as are most "normal" rosters. We have had a lot of attrition and are filling the pipeline.

They have 16 recruits, according to rivals, of which 7 are 4*s. The rivals team ranking that you see if punishing OSU for having a small class. That happens from time to time, however, and will happen to UM next year. (If we fill our class for 2010, then 2011 will be a small class) Their 3.38 "average stars" is higher than that of a lot of teams that are ranked ahead of them. In fact, if you sort the teams by average star ranking, then OSU is 15th and UM is 23rd.

They are the favorites to land 4-star CB Christian Bryant(rated #6 at his position and 86 overall), and I also think they end up with 4-star OL Matt James(#6 OT and 57 overall). Im not sure who else they are after, but those are 2 pretty solid recruits.

Right now (based on average stars) OSU would be ranked the 7th best class but because they only have 16 commitments they are down at #19.Even if they finished with 3 3star players and 3 4star palyers they'd still end up top 10 so i wouldn't read too much into the rankings as of right now.Come February 3rd, they will have a top 10 class(unfortunately).
