The Open Championship - Final Round

Submitted by 160 IQ on

It's turning out to be a duel between Mickelson and Stenson at Royal Troon.  Great golf by these two.

Looking forward to the round. On another note, what are the odds that Tiger never plays another competitive (T-5 finish) round of golf in his career?

Disagree.

Tiger has had several "procedures" for bulging discs in his low back, per lay media reports, microdiscectomies (scraping/shaving down protruding discs) in the last two years.

Only a matter of times before he fully extrudes a disc and requires a full discectomy, given the repetitive torque put on the lumbar spine by a professional golfer.

And that doesn't even take into consideration the swing changes Tiger had to make to offload the torque from his shredded knee.

A discectomy with fusion wouldn't even be a career killer for Tiger. They are relatively minor surgeries. He could be competing within a year of one. The big thing about tiger right now is that he hadn't been enjoying golf for a long time. His current absence is trying to find the joy in golf again much more than it is a couple non-instrumented microdiscectomies.

I'm bummed out the course is so docile. I wanted two guys finishing their final roumd battered, bloody, and bruised. Instead were getting lawn jarts stuck at the pin. Not what I was hoping for.

besides these two tells me that the course isn't nearly as docile as you think.

Mickelson and Stenson are, simply put, playing some of the most fantastic golf possible.  One makes a great shot, then in response, the other not only doesn't blink but matches it or better.

Ultimately, this Open turned out to be a microcosm of Phil's career.  He playerd well enough to win, but there was one guy who was better than him on that day.  Phil has five majors.  It would have been nice to see him get a sixth, which flirts with "legendary" status.

IMO, though, seven majors is the borderline for being a "legend."  Guys with seven or more majors get streets, trophies, golf courses and drinks named after them.  Guys with six or less get nice jobs on TV.  Phil will always be the guy who was good enough, but fell just short.

If you would have offered Phil a 6-under 65 on Sunday had would have taken it gleefully every time.  Who would have thought Stenson could put up a 63?  Phil played well enough to win 99 out of a hundred times.  Stenson was just lights out (and don't forget he had two bogies - could have been an all-time round).

after the tee shots on 17.  Any other Open and Phil would have another major; just doesn't look like it's meant to be today.

Stetsons off to Stenson!

In my lifettime, there won't be many final rounds of a major where the winner has 10 birdies, and 65 is not good enough.  Fantastic golf by both, and Stenson played the best golf of his life to win.  Amazingly, both guys could have shot a couple lower if all their close putts dropped.

Phil playes a fantastic final round, only to be bettered by Stenson. Just had to stand and give a polite golf clap for those two and their battle on the Sunday.
