One Reason to Give Rich Rod More Time

Submitted by M16 on

I know this whole "do we keep Rich Rodriguez" thing has been beaten to death. But this is one angle I haven't heard discussed.

So, it seems, as a very general statement, that if Rich Rodriguez were to leave, Jim Harbaugh would be the #1 target to be Michigan's new coach. Now, if you look at the situation for both coaches, and if Jim Harbaugh is in fact our #1 guy after RR, Michigan is in an advantageous position. Rich Rod's contract runs through the 2013 season, while Harbaugh's runs through the 2014 season.

What this means is that there is no rush to snatch Harbaugh up right now, because if we give RR one more year and he totally blows it, we will be sitting in exactly the same situation we are now next year. Basically, the point is that we gain nothing by rushing into a Harbaugh signing, but we gain an extra year to see what Rich Rod can do next year if we wait, while still having the ability to get him at that point.  Cost-benefit and such....

P.S. - Yes there's the possibility of him going to the NFL, but if he wants the M job like some people say, I think he'd wait around another year or so.

Okay, but what if Jim Harbaugh and Rich Rod trade jobs for a year? No really hear me out...they could do a trading places type deal and see what happens.  Maybe Harbaugh runs a crazy spread offense and meets a hooker but she's really a good person, and Rich Rod runs a professional style, more clean cut offense and does ok, even though he's more of a loose cannon.  And then in the end they can both get back at the NCAA when the frozen OJ market projections come out...oh, it'll be hilarious.

Can we please go back to bitching about our defense?  I don't think that subject has been discussed nearly enough this week.  Maybe somebody should start a thread?

Because if RichRod blows another season we'd be in exactly the same spot we are now! Who cares about letting another season or two blow away! Well let's just wait until Jesus Christ comes off of his contract then!

Note: This isn't an anti-RichRod post, but if your reasoning is, "Well RichRod blowing another season down the shitter won't matter so fuck it!" then I'm not sure why you'd even watch a Michigan game until they were in national title contention.

Not to keep feeding the OP, but there's no way Harbaugh will be at Stanford next year.  If he's not at UM, he'll be in the NFL.  He's not going to bide his time for a year, hoping RichRod fails, for the opportunity to coach at UM.

Did the OP hear DB's presser today?  AFTER the season. If we lose all 4 it doesn't look good for RR.  Unless DB consults THE KNOWLEDGE now, there's no way of knowing and we all know TK is done for the year.  One thing for certain, Harbaugh's relatively small buyout will play no factor whatsoever.
