This wasn’t saying Mazi should have been punished more then what he was, this is pointing out because alcohol was involved, it becomes much more serious than Mazi’s situation… I know he was on probation, he got what he deserved.

Did he have a gun in the tunnel?  If not, I don't care.  Very much hoping that the young man can work through this phase of life and come out better on the other end.

i could wonder if sparty fans will request the same punishment they wanted for Mazi

but that would require me to care what sparty fans think

They'll point to it and say "see? We actually punish our players when they do something wrong!"

Meanwhile we're still waiting for them to dismiss the other 6 players who were actively involved in assaulting Michigan players in the tunnel, and the only reason this guy got dismissed is because he couldn't even go 6 months without breaking the law...

Maybe I'm missing something. The article says he was suspended from team activities since late February, but this incident occurred on March 17th. So it appears there must be more than the tunnel and this recent gun incident in terms of being dismissed from the team.

It saddens me this young man is throwing away his chances but it blows my mind MSU fans are using this to show how their program is superior to U of M.

Congrats! Tucker kicked a guy off the team who was A) still in a program dealing with his assault B) Was drunk.

That’s what makes this country great. We can have different opinions and voice them.

the thing is, in my opinion, saying “guns” are the problem is lazy because it ignores the myriad of underlying issues

let me ask you this. if guns are the problem, why did it take this long to “show up”

they weren’t a problem in 1920. they weren’t a problem in 1950. why are they now a problem when Americans have always been armed?

So you think people are just crazier?

Guns have been around a long time, yes. In fact, households that own guns have decreased since 1972 (I don't have data prior to that). However, houses that had guns then had them in limited numbers and for limited, defined use (primarily hunting) not just generalized fear.

Look at the change in type and proliferation of pistols and rifles just since the early 2000s:

Superimpose that on the number of mass shootings:

"Run of the mill" homicides predominantly involve pistols.

Yes, guns have always been around. The fetishization of guns has not. More households had guns but they were shotguns to hunt, an activity that has declined significantly since the early 70s.

I'm not willing to accept that Americans are just crazier than other countries. The easy access to handguns and higher capacity rifles is absolutely a player here. I don't think that's an opinion.

I grew up with guns. I have guns. I'm absolutely ok to accept some inconvenience to bring about some positive change here--not just throw up my hands.

exactly. thank you for proving my point.

swimming pools, guns, and cars are inanimate objects.

the only way a gun is anything other than a paperweight is when it is being controlled by someone with the intent to kill. the gun isn’t the problem. the person is.

if “causing thousands of deaths” is the metric by which things should be banned, then we need to start banning all kinds of shit like cars, swimming pools, tobacco, etc.

No you missed the point.  People are operating guns with harmful intent, no one is doing that with a swimming pool.  No one is forcing anyone else to consume tobacco.

Yes this country has a mental health problem.  But until we deal with that complex issue, why not get rid of the weapons that mentally ill people have been using to commit mass murder.

Cars are heavily regulated in multiple ways.

Pools have regulations involving fences and access.

Tobacco? C'mon man.

You can still do all these things but we don't have people putting up huge roadblocks to safety of the general population.

Reading that article one thing I did notice was the name "Fink", and my brain perked up because I remembered the name as a lawyer who threw his name into the mix during the Tunnel situation as basically defending the MSU players for what they did.  And guess what...same guy.  So remember that when you read some lawyer quoted in an article he shouldn't be taken as an objective, impartial fount of legal wisdom.  That's especially true when he says "we live in a dangerous time" as a defense of a guy improperly conceiving a firearm while drunk.
