As much as I don’t like this, I think it’s the best and inevitable decision for most places.

Here in NYC, the bars were more packed than usual last night from people being mostly stuck at home this week:

I think giving people the option to self-police their vice is not going to work out.

No, you are. We have foolish government officials who make sudden decisions to cut off food supply sources without any forewarning...at a time when people are already panicking and making runs on grocery stores. So now foolish government officials shut down alternate places where people can get food, thus pretty much guaranteeing further runs on grocery stores. Stupidity running amok.

Make fun of Ohio all you want but our Governor has definitely led all states in responding to this crisis.  And the Cleveland Clinic opened up drive through testing yesterday all across northern Ohio.

I'm very proud of how we are handling this right now.

Honestly, his reaction to the pandemic has been one of the more sobering I’ve seen.   The numbers in Ohio are not that bad yet and he’s likely feeling some political pressure not to be so far out in front on this yet he is still acting.   It is way easier for Inslee and Cuomo where the numbers are bigger and they don’t need to be worried about pushing further than the president.

it makes me think he must be getting some pretty scary briefings and trusting the people who are giving them.

This isn't Ohio's first or only ongoing public health scare.  The southern part of the state was pretty close to ground-zero for the nation's fentanyl problem.  Public health is already on everyone's mind, so there's a will to act swiftly and effectively.

I felt only qualified to speak to what I knew, which was around 3-5 years ago in Cincinnati.  If anything, the fact that the problems continue in Toledo supports my point that Ohioans have a will to move quickly and decisively in the face of a new public health crisis.

He seems to be the only one listening and monitoring what’s going on in Italy and France and making a decision now that everyone else will follow in 7-10 days.  It’s feels strange to applaud the guy for doing the inevitable but here we are.  Kudos to the man for having the guts to listen to the experts.  Welcome to America.

Not sure how you are defining that.  I live in Toledo and things are fine, in general.  First case in the county just confirmed, but that was a ~70 year old man.  Otherwise, it's the *reaction* the the virus that is causing the most disruption here - not the disease itself.

I think the next few weeks will tell a different story....I’ll be jumping back into the vortex tomorrow (I’m a nurse and I work in the ICU). It may be a couple weeks but it’s going to get ugly in the hospitals.
People. Just. Don’t. Get. It.

This. It is so much worse than the numbers show, and the difference in deaths is at least 1 order of magnitude if we don't implement these changes. The numbers will be spun in several directions and politics are going to play a role in the reporting. It is almost certain that deaths connected to this disease will be under reported.

This is a fucked up statement. Be sensitive to other people. As someone who works in a hospital where a patient tested positive and has elderly parents who are high risk living in Ohio who depend on me and my brother to help them for simple things like groceries and taking out the trash I’m beyond livid at this. You may feel safe but others out there at risk. And it’s stupidity like this that spreads this and put others at risk

Lighten up Francis....if you have ever read anything by XM he's ANYTHING but direct, devious, or demeaning ... Consider it an attempt at MILD OSU humor not a Personal shot at Ohio...go buy toilet paper or something geez...he was making light of the situation not wishing death or illness on anyone.

oh come on.  i was totally joshing and that was obvious and there isn't the slightest seriousness about my comment.  a little humor is actually a very good thing at these times.  and if that offends you i'm not sure how you get along in a hospital.  the humor there can be brutal.  and man, you wouldn't ever want to be at a murder scene with us back in the day.  you get called out at 0300 hrs to see some dude with the their head blown off, trust me, humor helps the nightmares go away.

Amen XM, and I'd love to hear how to make those nightmares go away...there are some I can't seem to get rid of. It's pretty sad that some just can't see reality beyond their own reach. People are becoming more dangerous than this virus.

Never been a big fan of DeWine in the past, but as a former Ohioan I applaud him for demonstrating leadership in crisis. This is much bigger than politics, and the moment people realize this the better chance we all have of fighting this virus.

In times of crisis this country is capable of amazing things. Our country made great sacrifices to win multiple world wars. Treating this virus as anything but a war right now is shortsighted. We need to rapidly increase test availability. We need to ramp up our capacity to produce masks, gowns, gloves, and other supplies. We need to shut down non-essential businesses and find a way to reduce the economic stress on workers and small businesses. We need to find a way to provide childcare for essential healthcare workers and first responders.

Each one of us can do our part by practicing great hygiene, distancing ourselves from others, and providing assistance when and where possible to those in need such as the elderly and infirm.

Stay safe where ever you are and keep in touch with your loved ones at risk.

Stressful situations typically reveal your true character.  I have heard good things about the Kentucky and Illinois governors too.  What I perhaps like most about this thread is that I have no idea what party the OH governor belongs to.  Be a good person, be humble, curious, and confident...good things will happen.

no reason to lose jobs over it. The money was budgeted for teacher and administrative salary as well as hourly wage. This is a catastrophic event/panic. Schools have no materials costs, no revenue caps...it's salary. Students could be reached via online/other means going forward. Anyone bitching about that scenario...it's out of the hands of education, and educators. As a major incubator, if teachers have to teach from home, so be it. They deserve to be paid, even if it is a daycare inconvenience for spoiled ass parents. Maybe throw the teen age neighbors a few bucks a day.

DeWine has been as on top of this as anyone.  He realizes that there are always going to be 10% of the population who doesn’t listen to recommendations.  This really needs to be done federally and until all airfare is shut down it’s not going to work properly.

I just got the following message from my attorney, who has connections in Lansing.

ISO someone to setup the HomeSure Lending GoFundMe.

I have heard that the governor is going to order the closing of MOST businesses effective tonight or tomorrow. Press conference scheduled for this evening.

This week (Thursday I think?) Ohio officially estimated that they have 100,000 people carrying the virus, with only 26 confirmed.

There is no reason to think they are unique in their outbreak being so widespread. Current computer models are estimating that cases will peak late April to early may.

The next 2-10 weeks are going to be a disaster we will remember for the rest of our lives.

If by dancing you mean math then I agree.  She used the current model the state is using that projects a 1% current infection rate.  Extrapolate given there are11M people here and that's how you arrive at 100,000 people carrying the virus right now.

Is 1% accurate?  Who the hell knows because we haven't been testing but my guess is we'll know a hell of a lot more a week from now.

Personally I fear that estimate is conservative.
