Odds of M/MSU being a College Gameday battle

Submitted by Wee-Bey Brice on

As other MGoUsers pointed out there is still no game time for the MSU game. It's starting to shape up like this could be a top-15 matchup two weeks from now. The number 3, 6, 7, 8, 19, 21, 23 ranked teams all lost games yesterday so there will be some serious reshuffling in the rankings today.

Michigan will almost certainly move into the top 20, while Northwestern was already No. 16 before their shutout yesterday, so they'll move into the top 15. A win vs NW next week would catapult the good guys into the same position.

What are the odds we still haven't heard a game time because the value of the game won't be decided until next week? Could this be a potential College Gameday game?

If they did go to Ann Abror, that would be a first. Every other time they have gone for the UM/MSU game, the game was always in East Lansing. But if Florida/LSU is also playing that day, no way are they going to choose our game over that one.

If MSU is still ranked #2 they will come to Ann Arbor. Florida will be ranked about #12(around where we would be with a Northwestern win) and LSU about #4. So it won't have the higher ranked team involved. Plus ESPN can always send SEC nation to that game and have all ends covered.

I think the fact that none of those games will be on and ESPN/ABC channel helps us.  They've done non-DIsney games before, but if it's close I'm sure ESPN wants to promote themselves.

Is playing a week Game Cock team next week. If Leonard puts up 200 again, there is no way ESPN doesn't chase that story to Florida against their defense.

You're forgetting something. I think of the four teams in question (UM, MSU, LSU, Florida), Florida is the most likely to lose this week. Gameday obviously won't go to that game if Florida is coming off a loss to unranked Missouri.

Don't want to start a separate thread, but is there an early line yet for the Northwestern game? I'm guessing it would be something like Michigan minus 2-4.

Prolly some of the books will post later today but as of now nothings up.  I would guess the line opens about where you think but moves to Michigan -5 by kickoff.  That BYU line opened at -3 and Michigan money moved it to -6.5 by kickoff.

They will certainly stay in the top 3 or 4 but don't discount the fact that ESPN won't be able to see past their boner with the big SEC tattoo on it. I would love for them to be in AA and I think we deserve it. It's just hard to imagine them passing up that game. Hope I'm wrong.

I actually don't think ESPN has any inherent SEC bias.  Sure - they talk about the SEC a lot, but that's because they have lots of good teams with large fanbases.  This should not be a surprise.  However, they also talk about ND and OSU a ton when they're good, for the same reason.  When Michigan was a top team (and even a lot of the time they weren't) ESPN gave us tons of air time.  Same thing for teams like Texas and USC.

And all things being equal, ESPN would rather push a big Big Ten match up than a big SEC match up because ESPN/ABC has our primary TV rights and not the SEC's.

"The ranking and records will be the Main consideration". If we don't look dominant over Northwestern than I don't think we have a shot against LSU vs Florida that week.

I'd say the chances of that happening are less than 5%. Like others have said, there are 2 SEC matchups they would consider before UM/MSU regardless of what happens next week. They'd prefer to wait either go to MSU/OSU (if State wins) or UM/OSU (if UM wins). And if no one wins out, they'll just follow teams competing for playoff spots.

Who's to say they don't come next week? There's only 3 top 25 match ups and we are one of them. The others cal 24 vs Utah 10 and Oklahoma st 20 vs WV 23

I really don't care. Just hope we beat MSU so all the annoying people I work with will finally shut the hell up. I just have a weird feeling state is better than we give them credit. I feel like they have gotten good leads and then lost focus. Vs us, they will be focused for the entire thing.
