Odds of Chuck Pagano Coming in as a Michigan DB Coach?

Submitted by NicholsArboretum on

With Chuck Pagano being fired today and the DB coach position opening up with Brian Smith going to Rice as the DC, what are the chances Pagano takes a flier and agrees to spend a couple years with his nephew (Carlo Kemp) while keeping himself busy football-wise? His resume shows multiple years as a DB coach. Obvioulsly this isn't a lock. (First post so pardon the formatting if it's off).

Pagano's coaching experience:

as a position coach? I doubt it. I'm sure Harbaugh or any other coach would be asking the same thing.

If we didn't already have a candidate lined up and Pagano was willing, then maybe. As it is, taking Bush's spot as a defensive analyst is a better option for Michigan. Either way, Pagano would be taking a massive pay cut, but staying involved in coaching while waiting for a bigger opportunity.

They were young coaches working their way up in the profession. Every coach wants guys like that on his staff. They moved on because they did very well here and only Durkin left after just one season. We probably could have kept Smith and Fisch if Jim really wanted to.

Pagano is not comparable to them at all. He's not supposed to be a college position coach at this stage in his career. He knows it. Everybody knows it. He'll be in demand for bigger jobs no matter how he performs here. How motivated or effective could he be as a recruiter if he's just taking a year off from a much more stressful job? If he wanted to make a longer term commitment, great. We could use another like Mattison. Seems like a pipe dream, though.

Smith is a bad example to use. He was by far the lowest paid coach on our staff.

I hadn't heard that Pagano was fired, but I'm not surprised.  Now the 'Harbaugh to the Colts' hot takes can start in earnest!  Lets see, NFL Network will have one.  Pete Finebaum will mention it.  Some sportwriter in Indy will bring it up as a suggestion to kick the tires, causing the biggest sensation - contract talks!  Every non-Michigan CFB fan will be telling us its only a matter of time before he leaves.  Yeah, this should be fun!
