Notre Dame in talks to join ACC in football

Submitted by smitty1983 on

Fox Sports has reported that Notre Dame is having conversations about joining the Atlantic Coast Conference for football. Already a member in all other sports, the Fighting Irish would become the 15th full-time member if this were to happen.

I didn't like dumping our series with Arkansas to play them again. Seems like they are scared to join the big ten after multiple offers too.

I could see UConn. They also may try to make a run at getting Maryland back. The ACC still cares strongly about basketball and they would be getting their "crown jewel" for football in ND. Finding a 16th team could easily focus on being a strong basketball school. UConn fits geographically. Also being able to claim the history's of Duke, UNC, Syracuse, Louisville, and UConn in the same conference is pretty crazy.

I guess it makes sense to join the conference that their greatest rivals, USC, Michigan, Michigan State, Stanford, and Purdue are in. Plus, South Bend's location makes it a no-brainer for regular travels to Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts and Upstate New York.

Wow I'd never heard that before.

I would think Manuel would've included some kind of clause that makes it very hard for ND To back out of that game, or where they would have to pay some ridiculous buy-out clause, but that would be the ultimate slap in the face. Especially after Manuel cancelled the Arkansas series and bent over backwards to get these chumps back on the schedule.

Why we didn't get the first game in the series is beyond me.

noter dame sucks.

let them go and be the 4th or 5th best program in the ACC and get beaten by Duke and Wake Forest every once in a while to boot.

The fact that they were already a part time member in the ACC was a joke.

I also realize this would probably all but kill any future meetings with ND (on a regular basis) but I really don't care anymore.

They have only 10 teams, no TV network but they could stay a primarily Midwest/Heartland conference and gain a national audience with ND.  Sometimes, I think that conference doesn't try to stay competitive in football.  A backloaded conference schedule is a gimmick.  Most big-time programs have their toughest games in late October into November.

Good for the acc, would have been fun to have nd in the conference but don't really care.  The ND NBC contract ends in 20125, the same year as the big 12 grant of rights. If they go after a big 12 school to round out the conference it could be what sets off the last round of conference re-alignment as the sec and big ten go to 16

This is nothing but a rumor. Tim Brando is the one "reporting" this. If you are familar with Brando, he's been pushing this story (ND to join ACC for football) for over a year now. There is no evidence that this is happening other than Brando's musings.

If we play along with Brando, sure an ACC Network with ND football becomes more of a reality. But even so, a full on TV network ala BTN is not happening. I mean do you really think ESPN is going to launch another college sports network in this TV/media climate? ESPN is currently cutting costs left and right, but will move forward with an expensive network dedicated to covering a conference that generates very little interest compared to the B1G and SEC? Industry insiders are pretty adamant that the ACC Network (if it does happen) is going to be a digital only venture and I don't see ND being very interested in that, certainly not enough throw away a century of playing football as an Independent.

I was coming on to say just this. Brando hasn't broken actual news in forever, and there's a reason no major news outlets have picked this up. This is simply one man trying to speak his fantasy into existence. I too am of the mindset that the ACC Network at best will basically be ESPN3 with its own logo. It's not going to be the cash cows the SEC and Big 10 Networks are.

I hate this whole conferences because of cable coverage deal.   The regional pride thing of conferences goes away.  I hate ND, but I'd trade them for Rutgers or Maryland in a minute.

Well . . . .  the fact that Tim Brando mentioned people "talking" about it probably means there are discussions about ND joining "a" conference.  Big 12 has also discussed options recently.A couple things to keep in mind:

1.   it's likely that either the ACC or the Big 12 will implode soon.  Those two conferences are racing to determine which survives.  Last expansion, two or three of the blueblood ACC schools were upset at the disparate treatment in favor of ND, and about adding Louisville.  At least two, and possibly three of them have been rumored for slots in the next B1G expansion;

2.  The ACC network is likely a nonstarter now that ESPN has no money to contribute to it. Even were it to get off the ground.    ND would bring the network closer to fruition than without them, but is the conference really willing to create a Texas type situation for revenue sharing? Would this bring the demise of the ACC one step closer, and sooner than many anticipated?

There's a lot on the line here.  If ND can negotiate an "unfair" distribution of cash, cement a channel for distribution of ACC football games, and be assured that UNC, UVA, and GT will stay on board despite that distribution, it seems like a very good option for them.  They would also avoid the substantial risk of becoming a Penn State in the B1G.  I doubt it does anything for their student athletes outside of money, though.  For instance, loss of rivals and long distance and frequent travel for all sports, among others.

Like ND, PSU enjoyed a prominent position as an independent, and was able to keep all their money.  I think they made the right decision to join the B1G.  However, by playing better teams on a consistent basis, they have not enjoyed the level of winning they had become accustomed.  ND, almost surely, will find it more difficult to compete consistently for a B1G champtionship than they have at making a top tier bowl as an independent over the last several years.

It's my feeling that is likely to change soon as a result of conference realignment.  If I'm right, ND needs to decide whether they join the B1G, which is a "no-brainer" from a fit perspective, but at the risk of becoming less significant over time.

So glad Coach Purple Face was never even considered for the Michigan job. Harbaugh better not lose to this clown.

I'll believe it when I see it, but that would give the ACC a very interesting footprint indeed in football, a sort of Dali-esque image of a man being stabbed in the back by the western reaches of the Ohio River watershed.

I wonder what NBC will do with their Saturdays then....maybe fill it with Tom Hammond GIFs and call it "Here Sat Our Standing Appointment With Notre Dame".

Notre Dame should remain an Independent in football.

Instead, ACC should take West Virginia.

Big 12 can take in Houston.

Then call it a day.

Oh, and...ACC and Big 12....

and keep them out of the B1G. Every B1G team should cancel their series with ND and let them play in the ACC and have to travel a long ways for games. They have for years thought they were too good for the B1G and I don't understand why teams in the conference still schedule them. Thought it was stupid of us to go crawling back for them for a game when they dumped us like they did...

Personally, I think it would be cool to see ND join the B10 West.  I'd be happy when they fully join the ACC and do their thing there.  I'm not impressed at all by having ND on our schedule although there is a lot of history and tradition; I personally wanted the home and home with Arkansas instead of ND.

Doesn't the contract with them include a stipulation where if they join the ACC as a full member they don't have to make the return trip to Michigan Stadium?

ND now really is not that different than UM before Harbaugh arrived.  Great tradition; great academics; rabid fan base; tons of money; located in area without great high school talent; suffering through some lean years.

ND could be great again if they could find the right coach, but I do not see a Harbaugh-type waiting in the wings for them.

My recollection is that during the wave of converence expansion, ND was looking to join a conference for all of the sports other than football.  The Big Ten and the ACC were the two preferred landing spots for ND.  Delany refused to consider ND if football didn't come along. The ACC was willing to let ND stay independent, as long as they play 5 football games against ACC schools each year.

To ND this was an obvious choice. And we were so commited to this concept that we brought in Hopkins for lax only.  And now ND for hockey only.

This is one of the dumbest (among many) things Delany has ever done.  ND should be in the Big Ten and probably would be if B1G leadership was so foolish.

There was a time when this would have been the first post I clicked on.

Instead it was like the eighth post, after such newsworthy posts as MS Paint and Lacrosse and others like that.

I'm over whatever Notre Dame does or does not do.  I just don't care.

Since ND is in the heart of Big 10 country but they show there disloyalty and why there chickens overrated. Big 10 is way better than ACC.
