not to be a buzz kill but something to consider about manny

Submitted by dpowell7 on
Ok not to be a huge dick and bring down everyone's high but is anyone else thinking that if michigan keeps advancing and manny keeps playing like he did last night that he is going to leave after this year? I mean why wouldnt he, especially if they end up beating OU. Michigan goes as Manny goes and his stock will soar if he kills it saturday. Kind of depressing b.c of how great of a talent he is but something to think about when you watch michigan sat, it might be his last game in the maize and blue....

I don't think so. He is to hot and cold. One day he scores 30, the next he scores 3. For all we know, Sims could step up tomorrow and we beat OU on his back, while Manny gets benched. Obviously, that is not the likeliest of scenarios, but it could still happen.

The only way his draft stock rises so much that he becomes a first rounder, is if he leads us to a national title (like Anthony did for Syracuse), while averaging 25 a game. If he does that, I'll take it and wish him the best of luck in the NBA!

Ummh, I was just reading through the comments, and came upon this "quote." Whatever. I don't know Carmelo, and whether or not he was (or was not) a prima donna, so can't comment intelligently (like I ever comment intelligently!!) However, as you, or someone else on the blog said previously, everyone has to decide what's best for them. I would hate for Manny to go, and hope he stays, but he has to decide. I don't know his family economic situation (do they really need the money now?) I don't know his academic situation (does anyone know how he is doing in classes?) If his family needs the money, and Manny can't hack school, then obviously he should go. Regardless, here are five reasons I think Manny stays. I would love for you, or for those closer to the team, to either confirm or destroy the following reasoning. 1) I don't think the team will go beyond the sweet 16, or at best, the elite 8. And this doesn't raise the profile of a 6'5" guard high enough to be a lottery pick. Yes, if we win the NC, that changes things for Manny. And if pigs could fly . . . 2) I think the team really enjoys being together and playing ball together. There are times when teams seem to just be going to work. It isn't fun, and you can tell. The players don't like the coaches, the coaches look down on the players, the team is fighting with each other, etc., etc. While this can work, it isn't an environment guys love to be in. With Michigan, you have the sense that they've worked hard, and this is FUN! BTW, that's one of the things that was great about the Fab Five . . . they really seemed to have fun together. Same thing with Magic Johnson. He played with joy, and it was fun. OT. Regarding Manny, I think that with Peedie, and even the others, they have jelled, and you kinda hate to break that up, because they like playing together. IIRC, there have been some football players at Michigan who have come back their last year because they enjoy being on the team. I suspect that is true for Manny too. 3) The team has an extremely bright future. Who is leaving? Lee & Merritt? Two walk-ons? We lose two guards, but we add Morris, and bring back LLP, Grady, Novak, and Douglass to guard. Cronin comes off the redshirt, so we have more size. Along with Peedie and Gibson, of course. I think that with the team basically staying together, Manny is more likely to stick. They will have some "unfinished business," both in the Big 10 and the Tourney. If we had two or three senior starters leaving, and the team was starting from scratch, maybe Manny would go. But the core is returning, making it more likely for Manny to return. 4) I think that Manny likes Beilein, and realizes that Beilein has improved his game. And I think Manny is intelligent enough to want to learn and improve under a good coach. This only raises his stock further. 5) The last reason may or may not affect Manny, but here it is. Sometime in the last week or two, I read an article, perhaps on ESPN, about the dire straits the NBA is in. According to the article, the NBA is losing money big time. The author suggests that there will be a lock out next year or the year after. Great players in free agency are not being sought, because owners can't afford it. If this is the climate, and I was a top 25 player, but not a top 5 player, it would seem wise to wait. I've heard that college seniors are really sweating coming into the job market this year. If Manny sticks around, gets a degree, has fun, and raises his NBA stock, waiting a year or two until things have settled out, it may be much, much better for him personally. That's my two cents, and that's about what my opinion is worth. BTW, Beilein himself was quoted somewhere as saying that he likes a mixture (of players who are hard workers who stick for four years, and those who may leave early because of exceeding talent.) That makes sense to me. Of course, being selfish, I want players with the skill level of Glen Rice who are here for the duration, but that's not going to happen, and that's ok.

like everyone else said, he's staying. he knows Beilein is making him a much better player and he seems to like playing with his roommate Sims too much for him to leave.

It at least appears that Manny has bought into the coach, the system, the school, etc... I don't think he's going anywhere. Maybe if he touches you, your blindness will be cured, your leprosy gone, and like Tebow, five minutes in his presence will change your life forever.

i'm not sure what he's doing. look at his game though. he's completely bought into j.b.'s system, he's a team first player and very content with his role. manny doesn't appear to be some arrogant superstar at all. i think he realizes what another year in college ball could do for his draft status and pro career. the type of players that leave early are the players that are so high on themselves and not the team. this just doesn't seem to be manny. who knows another year or two of college could make him a lottery pick.

with Belein's coaching and Manny goes from possible late first rounder this year, to a lottery pick in 2010. With NBA guys, you need to be a lottery pick and not just in the first round. I think the NBA buzz about Manny is that people aren't sure where to play him just yet (big 2? small 3?). One more year as the go-to guy on a top Big 10 team and he can solidify himself as a Dwayne Wade / Clyde Drexler / strong 2 guard type scorer. I wouldn't be surprised though if he goes to some of the pre-draft camps and then comes back to school. Just hope people don't jump off bridges or bell towers or physics buildings when they hear he's going to the pre-draft camps.

I love Manny and his game, but no matter how well he plays in the tourney I think he stays one more year. He still needs to work on his handle and shot selection. If you notice he almost always goes right, but gets away with it given his extreme first step quickness. Kind of similar to Brandon Rush at Kansas who came back for one more year (and won a championship). I agree with Wolverine In Exile in that another year and he could be Wade-esque in skills and versatility. Sims on the other hand needs to become a more consistent inside presence. He loiters on the perimeter too much, leaving us no threats on the boards. Anyone else think that Grady gets a bad rap for his D? I think the team's offense flows best when he's in the game. CJ Lee's ball-handling and decision-making in the clutch gives me ulcers.

I'm not sure, but did Grady put up a couple of ill-advised shots last night? I think he got pulled after his second off-balance air ball, but I could be wrong. Regardless, if his D is not lock down, and he's not benefiting the team on offense, why should he play? I actually like Lee's decision making, and his ball handling isn't awful. I think Grady sitting on the bench may make him all that more hungry to improve and to take a lead role next year. I'd be interested in knowing what Manny and Peedie and the rest of the team think too, although obviously it is always cd on who plays.

The one that "beat" the shot clock (which Grady put up with 3 or 4 seconds left) appeared to be the nail in the coffin, I would agree. It looked like Coach Beilein walked the entire length of the bench with him when Grady was yanked. I don't know what Coach was saying, but I can't imagine he uttered too many "atta boys." Grady is a mystery to me watching from afar. All that quickness seems negated by poor decisions on both ends of the floor. From time to time, he's a spark, but more often a frustration. The two former walk ons, despite some lesser physical skills (KG is obvioulsy faster and seems to have a better stroke, IMO), seemed to be trusted much more by the coaches. I don't get the sense the other players doubt too much of what the coaches are telling them these days--or questioning who plays, who doesn't play, and when. We'd be in the NIT right now if that were the case, I'm guessing. Someone asked Coach B on his radio show a few days ago if Grady would be used in a bigger role to help break the Clemson press. Coach's response was less than enthusiastic. Something along the lines of "that might be something we consider," but in a tone that seemed to say God I hope it doesn't come to that. I think the likely way KG finishes the next two years is backing up Morris. Maybe starting first few non-conf. games in fall. But if Morris picks up the offense as quickly as Douglass/Novack did this year, I think Grady is looking at 10 - 15 minutes a game tops, with those minutes diminishing as the season goes on. Which isn't to say he can't be productive, utilized in spots, or be a leader like Merrit. Is the following possible? I would like to see Douglass rotate over to the 1 to spell Morris next year. Don't know if his skill set as a ball handler will ever allow that, but he sees the floor well, makes good decisions, and maybe the team's best pure passer. I have some fantasy of interchangable 3-ball assasins, rotating through numerous combinations of Douglass, LLP, Morris, Vogrich, and Novak playing alongside Harris and Sims.

Harris played well yesterday, but he is still kind of a 'tweener who needs to shore up his shooting a bit and cut down on the turnovers. He seems to genuinely like his time at UM, and I don't see him wanting to leave just to be picked 25-35 and ride the bench. He sticks around, he might become a lottery selection next year. EDIT: I wrote this before I saw what was written below. +1 to the comments below.

I know Harris as well as any of the commenters here. Which means, I know nothing. However, that never stops anyone else from opining--so why should it stop me? Anywho--Mannie will get some kind of idea of what his worth is to the NBA when the season is over. I think they have people who do that kind of junk. Then, he'll consider that against his financial situation. The decision will actually be an easy one. Whichever way it goes, I wish him the best.

I believe he comes back for another season. All his hard work will be on full display next season. Michigan will be in the thick of things Big X and nationally if he stays.

These games tell me he's not close to being ready for the league FGC - 2/9 6 points 4 TO Wisconsin - 3/13 9 points 3 TO Indiana 4/12 17 points 4 TO Penn St. 2/10 6 points Northwestern 2/9 8 points Ohio St. - 5/13 22 points 10(!)TO Purdue 2/7 5 points 4 TO in 18 min MSU 2/10 7 points 4 TO Minnesota 2/8 8 points 5 TO Iowa 3/13 9 points 3 TO That's over a span of 18 games, and in 10 of those he was just bad. His inconsistency (admittedly aided by Big Ten hack 'em smack 'em mantra of basketball) is maddening, because some of these teams he turns in these performances against (FGC, Indiana, Northwestern, Iowa) don't exactly evoke memories of the Bad Boys. When his bad games look like 5/13 15 points, 2 TO, that'll mean he's ready
