Michigan win, Spartan loss, Buckeye loss. Not a bad holiday weekend.

Can someone explain why Chris Holtmann has this reputation as some underrated gem of a head coach?  He's followed Stevens at Butler and Matta at OSU and hasn't come close to matching the success of either.  Pretty mediocre coach, hope he stays at OSU for a long time.

He's a little bit of a Harbaugh coach, good to great regular season results, but pretty middling post season efforts. No sweet 16s at OSU and only one at butler. Matta was a great coach for them because they made deep tourney runs consistently. OSU and Holtmann don't have the horses or the coaching to replicate that. Definitely would rather have him there than someone like Matta, Izzo, or even Underwood

I don't think his regular season results have been that great.  He overachieved his first year at OSU finishing 2nd in the Big Ten but that was also riding a senior Keita Bates-Diop who was a 5 star recruited by Matta.  Since then he's finished 8th and 5th in the Big Ten, he never won his conference at Butler, and as you mentioned hasn't come close to achieving the tournament success that Stevens and Matta had.  He just strikes me as a very mediocre coach.

Too early to tell. People thought NW football turned the corner this year too, and then got rampaged by MSU

Beating Indiana and OSU do not move the needle for me at all, but MSU was a good win for them. If they can win even one of their next three (at Iowa, at Michigan, home vs Illinois) then I'll be a believer

NW this week has beaten MSU and OSU at home and IU on the road. It might be hard for any team to match that 3 game stretch all season in the B1G. Our game against them January 3rd just got really interesting.

They only lost 4 games at home last year, to Arkansas, Maryland, Wisconsin and Purdue. They also beat MSU, OSU, PSU, FSU and Iowa. So all things considered pretty solid.

Also as far as NW is concerned, IU was a top 20 team to KP/Torvik and we know how hard winning on the road is in the B1G, even this year with no fans. By itself it wouldn't make your week, but with the other two games it's incredibly impressive IMO.

Do we?

I don't think we should compare home/road situations this year with any other year.  Fans are most of what makes up homecourt advantage (I'll concede a little bit due to familiarity, travel, etc).  We'll probably see lots of "road upsets" this year.

I’m still amazed at the hate spewed about Chris Collins when he was a name being dropped for Michigan job. Guy can coach.

Is Northwestern actually pretty good or are the Buckeyes and Spartys overrated?  I think it is a little bit of both Northwestern has some decent players and OSU and Spartys are ranked this high because of last year's teams.

Ohio State fans seem to think they're in for a rough season, based on their personnel.  I thought Sparty was good, especially after their win over Duke, but their fans say they have no good PG (compared to Cassius Winston) or Center, so the whole thing falls apart too easily.  I say it's early in B1G play, so teams are still figuring out how to matchup best in this conference, but I'd take our teams ability to matchup against anybody over every other team save Iowa (Garza could almost win the B1G by himself) or Wisconsin (a plucky well-rounded team with loads of experience).  Having a very good center seems to be what separates the best from the rest.  Kofi Cockburn for Illinois is saving them every game for example.  Dickinson will be our ticket to the top if he keeps up his good play.

Agreed.

Watched a lot of BB over the last few days and they are a complete, skilled team. Looked a helluva lot better than MSU, UK, or Louisville for sure.

Funny how  a bunch of blood bloods look like complete crap this year. The UK vs Lousiville game would have been unwatchable if not for Covid.

But, damn, the Zags look really, really good, don't they?

Typical OSU when up for most of the game and never could put NW away and it cost them.

Not a home loss and not really an embarrassment to them. The Sparty EL Loss was much sweeter for me anyway.

Glad to see that NW got a little bit of revenge after their matchup vs OSU in football.

Certainly, very few, if any, Big 10 "gimmes" this season. Take away the home court advantage, too, and many of these games are true toss-ups.

I'll say it: this is much more fun than (mostly) predictable Big 10 football. There were some surprises this season, though, undoubtedly -- Indiana being one of those. But, for the most part, it's Ohio State and then, well...everyone else. Hoops is a different story, especially this season. Looking forward to the madness.
