Non-Conference Over...Positives? Negatives?

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Now that the non-conference schedule is over...what are some positives and negatives that you've seen with this team?

Obviously the biggest positives are we're 4-0 and don't have too many significant injuries...but other than that, what do you think?

Here are mine:

+ The return of SOME form of defense
+  Jordan Kovacs
+ Brandin Hawthorne
+ Will Campbell finally coming along
+ Togetherness of team
+ Taylor Lewan emerging as the best LT in the B1G
+ Vince Smith's blocking
+ Fitz Toussaint's running ability
+ Denard's running ability
+ Borges' playcalling vs. SDSU
+ Roh in 2nd two games
+ Martin and RVB's consistency
+ Jake Ryan
+ Forcing turnovers
+ Blake Countess
+ Extra Points

- Borges' playcalling vs. EMU
- Stephan Hopkins
- Denard's passing ability
- Mike Shaw's running ability
- Brandon Moore's blocking
- Heininger playing inside
- Roh in 1st two games
- Kick coverages in 1st 3 games

- Cam Gordon's health
- Jordan Van Slyke
- Getting into position on defense

+Giving up only 10 points the past two games.

I know our defense has a long way to go, but we just held what was talked about as a top QB and a top RB in the NCAA this year to only 7 points.  I know we don't have a defense like LSU's (god that performance against WV was incredible, they have so many playmakers and are so fast), but this far exceeds my expectations for this year.

++++ 4-0 through the noncon
++++ Killing ND again as the clock ran out
+++ Defense!
+++ Creating turnovers!
+++ Bourges continuing to use elements of the zone-read
+++ Tackling
+++ Kovacs
++ No ST turnovers
++ Jake Ryan
++ BWC showing flashes
++ Roh starting to make plays
+ Secondary not giving up big plays

- O-line: Not generating as much of a push as I expected
- LBs: Still slow on counters, missing angles, etc.
- kickoff/punt coverage
--: WRs, drops, miscommunication with Denard
---: RBs (minus V.Smith) wtf?
---: Denard/Bourges passing attack; playbook needs to be dialed back IMHO, give Denard a chance to succeed, more quick passes off run threats
----: Offensive turnovers.  Yesterday, game should have been over midway through 3rd, giving backups more time to play
