I know someone always will - but it seems like it's Penn State, MSU, etc. Why aren't we the opponent after Maryland and Rutgers byes? Maybe we are, and maybe I am just yelling at clouds, but it seems like the upper half of the division frequently gets a bye before us.

This is just my perception based mainly off of MSU and this.

Impossible to extrapolate anything like that. Harbaugh is 1-3 against msu at home and was undefeated in East Lansing, so past results seem to disagree. Further, it’s impossible to say all other games would’ve worked out how they did. Lastly and most importantly I still don’t think they would’ve put us at 1. Three score win over Georgia would’ve been enough to move bama up even with the one loss. They were never going to schedule that rematch in the semifinals

No, we would have played the Covid year in East Lansing as planned.

I said "fix" because it's an opinion that people have had because it is evening out our home schedule each year to keep season ticket owners interested.

If our goal is to win a national championship, and we think we need all the stars to align in a year for it to happen, then it helps to have two stars guaranteed to be aligned every other year.

This is a good point and I agree. It's impossible to know the counterfactual, of course, but I do believe that game would have been a win if it were at home. And I think the CFP committee would have no choice to put undefeated Michgan #1 over the two 1-loss teams from the SEC.

I think Brandon was pretty cynical when he allowed the Big Ten to switch the home games vs MSU to odd years, thinking Michigan would have a better chance to go undefeated and get to the Big Ten Championship/BCS Championship game if both MSU and OSU were at home. Essentially punting on even years in exchange for a better chance at a special season in the odd years. I can't prove it was his thought process, but it always made sense to me.

JoePa is happy - he did that (open week before UM game) four years in a row under B1G stopped having bye weeks as a rule in the late 1990s.

Michigan might be switching Western Division opponents too.  PSU was supposed to play Illinois in 2022 but that is off now, it has been replaced by Northwestern.

Overall, kind of interesting.  Illinois was supposed to be the one Western Division opponent PSU played annually from 2022 to 2027 (similar to how PSU/Iowa and U-M/Wisky were annual from 2016 to 2021).  Doesn't seem to be anymore.

(Edited to add: PSU has within the past hour removed this new 2022 schedule from their athletics website.  I'm still assuming the schedule is real: they probably simply jumped the gun on a conference-wide announcement coming soon.)

That’s interesting. I wouldn’t mind losing Nebraska or Iowa as our cross-over game for next year. Iowa is supposed to be @ Kinnick (pass on that), and next year is going to be the year that Scott Frost either gets canned or turns things around. Either way, I’d rather watch that happen from a distance.

Regardless of who we lose, I think the most likely add is Purdue. We were supposed play them in AA in 2020 but didn’t because of COVID. We’ve only played them once since 2012 and haven’t played them in AA since 2011. Makes me think we lose the home game vs Nebraska (our protected cross-over) and add a home game vs Purdue.

Yes - I can definitely see Purdue @ Michigan being added.

Northwestern (PSU's likely new Western Division foe in 2022) is the western division team PSU both (1) hasn't played in the longest amount of time at ANY site (2017), and (2) hasn't played at home in the longest amount of time (2014).

Purdue fits that same bill for Michigan.

I am just looking forward to a year where we didn't play Wisconsin. I love that I get to let the taste of going into their house and taking their mojo linger on tongue. I'm not sure I love the idea of playing Nebraska for the next 5 years -- I can easily imagine Frost getting his house in order and winning 2 of those. Still, anyone in from the West is likely going to be an easier row to hoe than those stinking Badgers.

According to SI, the Indiana game will remain on November 12, but it will be in Bloomington instead of Ann Arbor (which we already knew).

Can I just stop to mention how insane the OSU schedule is? I mean, they might as well play high school teams at that point.

Love how they get a cakewalk schedule almost every year.

The B1G had one job: fix the issues caused by the last minute 2020 schedule. Instead, they've put the 2022 schedule in a blender when there was no need to do so.  Never underestimate the B1G's ability to ***k things up.
