ND players to vote on bowl game?

Submitted by king_kerridge on
Apparently the ND players are holding a super secret, player-only meeting this afternoon to "vote" on whether or not they are going to play in a bowl game this year. Even if the players decide to quit on the season, what are the chances that ND passes up millions of dollars to play in the Hawaii bowl when they owe Charlie "Baby Beluga" Weis $18 million and plan on hiring Bob Stoops? I'm going with -1000000%

any college team voting to NOT go to a bowl game. Not in this day and age. Even if the players don't want to play in some crappy bowl, Mr. Swarbrick and the rest of the ND administrators will see that it happens. Hey, maybe Cornflakes will get the interim tag for the game.

Why would the players decide to quit on the season? That's absurd. There's absolutely no reason ND should deny a bowl bid. Unless Charlie refuses to coach. Which, if I were a player, I'd still want to trip and free goodies.

"super secret paper-only meeting" lol so how did you find out? I wonder if you read the same newspaper article that I did? Probably not because you would then know it is the leadership committee who is voting and not the all the players. Why would they vote not to go to a bowl game? Weis was the reason why many of them came to ND to play football, that shouldn't be taken lightly.

Ooh, the classic internet tough guy - "Shut the fuck up"? Are you fucking for real? I have been a long supporter of Irish. Pay some fucking attention. It just seems lately he takes out his frustration here. And I thought I would fucking call him on it. (I used three "fucks" to your two, therefore I am tougher than you)

Chitown - simple answer "no". IMO, it is in poor taste to mock Michigan for not going to a bowl on a Michigan blog. As for the comparison of the quality respective posts that is a matter of opinion. What can't be debated is that I am all in for Michigan and have been for a very long time - I support all Michigan teams and want them to win every game. Our esteemed guest poster can't say the same so I'd appreciated it if you cut me a little slack for taking offense to his comments.

No, I won't. If you take Michigan football so seriously that you can't shake off a joke as innocuous a joke as the one Irish made, I feel bad for you. Further, I don't think team allegiances are a good reason to be an asshole to someone. So, he roots for ND. Does that mean he needs to cow-toe to you?

...and warriors always want one more battle to fight. They should vote unanimously to play. And if there is a dissenting vote or two, I can't imagine them ever being taken seriously in the locker room or on the field by their teammates again. Any team captain would say, "if you don't want to play, get the fuck out of my locker room." The only other consideration would be if the team loves Weis so much that they want to boycott a bowl game to protest his firing. And, as much as I like to laugh at him, I must admit that I can't imagine Weis doing anything but asking them not to boycott on his accord. I am sure they will be invited and end up playing.

Maybe the school will have to bring in a collection of replacement players, made up of its student body to play in the $$,$$$,$$$ game. Considering a lot of money is at stake, could the players be protesting for Charlie to keep his job? The school is really going to need that money and they've only retained him this long because of his phat contract.

There is no way ND gets millions of dollars from playing in the Hawaii Bowl. In fact, I'm willing to bet that playing in a bowl game (especially one located in the 50th State) will end up costing ND money. I would be in no way surprised if ND chooses not to play in a bowl game this year, even if the players vote to play. Remember, this is a school that was famously adverse to bowl games in general, and more recently, adverse to "lesser" bowl games. With the fact that a new coach will be coming in, the extra practices aren't even that much of a benefit, especially considering next year's starting QB will not be available.

Good point -- lesser bowl games tend to cost more money for travel (band, admin, etc.) than they offer. Of course, Pizza Pizza would be a quick bus ride! I agree that no way would players ever vote not to play a game. Think of senior who has no NFL shot; it's their last chance to play big time football. Would any other player deny that? Swarbick is just talking -- players can vote all they want, but it won't matter. My guess is that they go, even if it's a financial loss.

You're right, practice time is good, but in the current circumstances it's not as important in it's own right as say, 3 more weeks when you're in the middle of a transition to a completely different offensive or defensive systems. ND will not be able to institute a new sytstem, even if the new coach has been hired. So your remaining benefit from practice is fundementals work. How interested in the details do you think a coaching staff with future employment concerns on the mind is going to be? Additionally, as was pointed out below, Crist tore his ACL and will not be able to practice until the spring at the earliest. So, in addition to the coaching limitations, the player at the one position most in need of repitition, won't be available. Practice still would be a benefit, but a very limited benefit. Really though, the second paragraph wasn't my point in the post. My point was, ND will LOSE money by accepting a bowl bid. Everything should be seen in that context, not the idea that they are going to be raking in the dough plus getting the benefit of extra practice time.

ND's turned down a couple less presitigious bowls in recent history. One of the main reasons they accepted the Hawaii Bowl invitation last year was to recruit Manti Te'o with a game on the island and because ND desperately needed any sort of bowl win to clear the then-current streak.
