I would not have chosen Oct 23.  Its right in the middle of the season.  Both teams will need a bye week after the game to recoup,  Possibly a Thursday nighter the week before.  This game would have made more sense at the beginning or end of the season.

Also I love how the article states that it will have major implications for their national champtionship hopes.

Is this assumedly a "home" game for the Irish?  Sounds like Navy is walking into hostile territory to me.  If I were the Commandant of the USNA, I would park a few ballistic submarines off the coast of Ireland and threaten nuclear fallout if the crowd noise in support of ND exceeds a certain level.

You know who doesn't give a shit about Notre Dame football?  Everybody in Ireland.

ND will have more fans, but they will all be touristy/bowl game type fans traveling from the US.  The crowd will be no factor in preventing Navy from continuing their recent stretch of dominance over the Irish.

I thought this was announced a year ago? ND is also playing at Yankee Stadium this year (which I think is cooler, and more practical)

Which leads me to conclude...Michigan should play Alabama at Citi Field!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard for a college team.

These kids are students, as well as athletes. I realize this is a business and they are merely pawns in the game trying to get to the NFL, but these kids will get taken out of school in the middle of the year and flown to Europe. They're practice schedules and game schedules will get thrown all out of wack, all for the allure of the "Fighting Irish" playing in Ireland.

Cool idea in theory. Stupid idea in actuality.

The game is September 1st.  They will not get taken out of school.

If you think any player would have any issue with this, then you're insane.

Teams do this all the time.  The basketball team was just in Europe.  The volleyball team went to Brazil last year.  The NCAA allows each D1 team to travel internationally for competition once every 4 years.  It's a great opportunity for the student-athletes to see another culture and still be a part of their athletic committment.

It's called "mythical" because the NCAA does not actually award a national championship for FBS football (this is unique amongst NCAA sports).

Consequently, all claims of being "national champion" indirectly rest on popular consensus.  The writer's and coaches polls are typically used as manifestations of this but, as we have seen, sometimes even they disagree.  The BCS arrangement is an attempt to simplify the argument but again, as we have seen, this doesn't always work.

This is also why many of the old coaches (such as Bo) and possibly even a few of today coaches usually stress tangible goals such as winning all games, winning the Big Ten and wining the Rose Bowl.  If those goals are accomplished then that's pretty much a perfect season regardless of what anybody else says (whether sportswriter, fan, or team from the SEC, Big 12, whatever).

A non-playoff championship is certainly real, but it may lack legitimacy.  Does a two-loss (or even a  one-loss) team really deserve the title of "national champion?"  I'm not sure they do...but I am also comfortable with the possibility that some years simply do not have a national champion.

"I am also comfortable with the possibility that some years simply do not have a national champion."

This is an idea I wouldn't mind seeing toyed around with some more in a variety of sports.  Have some sort of title or set of criteria that teams would need to meet to earn that sport's highest honor.  Could be done in conjunction with a "best team of the year" thing, too.

Lansdowne Road looks like a pretty cool venue...I almost wish we were playing ND there.  Dublin would probably be a more interesting road trip than South Bend.

This game was announced years ago. But, yeah, the poor students: imagine the horror of having to spend a few days in Ireland. During school-time too! The shame and pity of it all.

Here's an idea: UK-based Wolverines should attend this game. Wearing UM shirts and Navy hats obviously.

If Notre Dame is no longer "relevant", then why does everyone that beats them act like they just won the Rose Bowl?  I think ND is still relevant because I still consider them a big game (And it appears almost every other fan base does as well).  When they are no longer considered a big game, then I think the relevant argument holds water.

I'm guessing even though all the players on both teams will be "of age" there, they still won't be allowed to go drinking?  What a shame it would be to be in Ireland and not get to take in a pint at the pub.

Navy will face Notre Dame in the newly constructed Aviva Stadium on Saturday 1st September 2012. The game will be a full NCAA regular season game and the outcome is expected to have a major effect on both teams National Championship prospects.

...

”We are all delighted that Navy has chosen Aviva Stadium for its game against Notre Dame in 2012,” said Aviva Stadium Director Martin Murphy. “We fully realize just how important this game is in the U.S. sporting calendar and we are looking forward to hosting what will undoubtedly be a fantastic event.
