NCAA Tourney: Round 1 Early Games Thread

Submitted by Blue@LSU on March 19th, 2021 at 12:31 PM

Figured we might need a thread to start off the ACTUAL tourney (sorry Staee).

10 Virginia Tech vs. 7 Florida (on now) CBS
14 Colgate vs. 3 Arkansas (12:45) TruTv
16 Drexel vs. 1 Illinois (1:15) TBS
11 Utah State vs. 6 Texas Tech (1;45) TNT

Both Florida and VT started out pretty sloppy, but I’ve got VT in my bracket so go Hokies!

Can anyone tell me why teams wait until they have 5 seconds left on the clock to try to score? Why wait? If you attack earlier you get more opportunities throughout the game and you aren’t always stuck jacking up garbage.

I'd say it's just the coaching philosophy per team. Like you said, the earlier you attack, the more opportunities you get, but in contrast the more opportunities opponents get. I also think the idea is to develop the play and get a high percentage shot attempt, but it does end up with a lot of poor time management and tough shots at the buzzer.

True on the team possessions. More possessions is better odds for offense but worse on defense. I get letting a play develop but dribbling at half court running 15 seconds off in a 1 possession game is dumb. Watching teams not even get a ball in the air before the clock ends is frustrating. Guess I would rather watch run and gun teams.
