The n-word : DG
I came across this article earlier in the day and it shocked me. I have not seen it posted anywhere on the board and thought this would be a good first post.
It simply is an article about our quarterback Devin Gardner has been called the n-word by the same people who call themselves fans of Michigan football.
This is just sad. How could a kid who has given his young life to the great University of Michigan and the fans deserve something so pathetic from some of the fans regardless of how he has played. He has given everything he has, and has done everything asked of him as well. I know its not all of them, but man it still is sad that he would have to deal with this.

I can say 100% for certain that I witnessed FAR worse (and more frequent) racism living in Michigan and Pennsylvania than I ever witnessed living in the south. By all means, though, keep perpetuating the myth that racism is worse in the south...

nonetheless-- well done on your part . . .

I spose it has to do with The Definition of Racism-- in The South of the 1960s and BEFORE of course, you have all The State Sanctioned Legal-Codified Anti-Black Statutes.
A virtual South African Apartheid State-- complete with a virtual Police Force Terrorist Organization.
In the North-- it never reached THIS Level. But of course-- you can have like-minded individuals from Both Sections. And you do, of course . . .

broadly speaking, of course
actually the comments by Clarence, at first, struck me as being part of The Southern Revisionist School which attempts to reject Lincoln, Northern Abolitionsim, Northern efforts at the Civil Rights Act of the 1960s, etc etc. And this is DONE-- by emphasizing Northern Racism.
Clarence-- I guess, was actually NOT adopting the Above Revisionist View. We had a kind-of Communication Breakdown, I spose . . .

The top ten most segregated large metropolitan areas were in older Northeast-Midwest “Rust Belt,” which has tended to lose population in recent decades. All but one of the least segregated large metropolitan areas were in the West and South, where metropolitan areas have tended to gain population....
In conclusion, it is clear that the decline in the residential segregation of African Americans in the 1980-1990 period continued apace over the 1990-2000 period. Most strides seemed to have been made in the West and South, particularly in California, Florida, and Texas, although increases in segregation were apparent for some small metropolitan areas in the South. Less progress was made in the Northeast and Midwest, and the large metropolitan areas that had been the most segregated at the beginning of the period remained at or near the top of the list.

When I lived in Chapel Hill, I had a friend who'd moved to the area (adjacent Durham) from Boston that commented he loved living in an integrated neighborhood.
Now I think the economics of a growing Research Triangle area (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill in which reside NC State/Duke/UNC) and nice-but-not high-end home prices around $200K at the time had a lot to do with it. (Why his Boston area neighborhood was so segregated but his Durham neighborhood was naturally integrated.)

is an insidious racism that is alive and well. maybe in the south, everyone is poor regardless of skin color. but i don't see why having white and black people living together would make racism less prominent.
October 22nd, 2014 at 12:11 AM ^
isn't a factor that would--all other things being equal--increase the prevalence of racism?
October 22nd, 2014 at 1:09 AM ^
racism isn't necessarily some inherent quality, so if you're never around people of a different race, there's no reason to be racist unless your parents are racist.
edit: the all other things being equal isn't relevant because of the fact that the north and south have very different racial histories that have never been magically eradicated by father time.

Devin having "been called the N-word so many times this year" in the North in 2014.
And father time has seen a lot of Northerners (like me) migrate to the South. Now I've never lived in the "deep south", but I haven't been able to tell a difference between Michigan and North Carolina or Virginia.

extrapolate internet trolls to be representative of anything.
Edit: i don't really know why i'm arguing my point. outside of detroit and ann arbor, michigan could be mistaken for mississippi.

I'm not surprised that we have a section of loonies in our fanbase since we are college football 2nd biggest fanbase I believe according to Nate Silver.

i have been critical of Gardner's play, but never of his effort, he has given everything, done everything we have asked him, I respect the hell out of him. He has struggled at QB, but anybody in their right mind to use that word in general, let alone towards any athlete, should be ashamed, and honestly, are not fans at all.
October 21st, 2014 at 9:04 PM ^
For every one fool that would make disgusting comment like that there are at least 5,000 real M fans that would like to throttle the coward.
I am disappointed in Devins play as I am sure he is. I have never met Devin, but it is easy to see what a fine young man he is, Wow, what a warrior he is giving the team and fans every thing he has every game. Win or lose I cheer for Devin and the entire team.

That's really sad. But there are knuckle draggers everywhere, even amongst this fan base, unfortunately.

I will be there cheering as loud I can on senior day next month for him. He is one fine young man, and represents the University very well. Yeah, he hasnt played as well as we all would have liked, but that man is a warrior. He has been through alot in his time here. Anyone who would attack him personally can eat shit.

I downvoted this because you are giving a voice to the knuckleheads. It's the internet, come on. You're posting this to be provocative, nothing more, nothing less. It could be one person, it could be ten. Either way it's a SMALL percentage of the fan base or population.
Ok, now for my 2 cents. I don't mean to be a dick but this board used to be where I came for information, not point/counterpoint about subjects with little relevance. Here is what I care about, when we play a game, how we play the game, who played in the game, and who is signed to come play in future games.
If we could get back to that FANTASTIC.

I hate to say it, but this board has always had discussions like this. I mean, I'd get the complaint about posts regarding Zombie shows during the season, but an article about a prominent member of the current football team acknowleding comments being made by "fans" using language that should have been eradicated from the vernacular decades ago strikes me as pretty relevant.
And while I'm sure a small percentage of the fanbase would call Gardner this name, the constant shit-talking of current and former players of all skin colors and backgrounds by Michigan fans is pretty universal. Hell, some of the stuff said about Navarre when I was at UM was disgusting, and LOTS of players who aren't as prominent as QB have been called terrible names by this fanbase. Occassionally pointing out that we can be insensitive dumbasses and to cut that out doesn't feel like a waste of time to me.

Devin is a great guy
A few racists don't paint a picture of the fanbase
And there are racists of every color
No race is morally superior to another or especially bad compared to the others

October 21st, 2014 at 9:52 PM ^
This shouldn't shock anyone. This fanbase is full of human beings, some of whom are ignorant pieces of trash. Our only hope is that these idiots are too dumb to procreate, but I fear that f*cking around is one of the few things they are probably good at.
