MSU Game 10/30 - Night Game Possible?

Submitted by Michigan Philosophy on October 4th, 2021 at 1:47 PM

So I am sure I am not the only one with plans Saturday night Halloween weekend. Is it possible we have to play this at night? I'm really hoping we don't as it will screw up my plans. I've seen there are weird rules about when we can or can't just curious if this could be a night game.

Looking ahead, if everything keeps going well for both teams it would certainly be a compelling TV matchup. Are there any other potential matchups TV would prefer? I'm just trying to convince myself that one of the biggest games of the year isn't going to totally screw plans I've had for months lol

This is the question I've been wondering about. Would the Big Ten Network field a night game when there is a Big Ten night game on ABC?

Conversely....if Iowa beats Penn State this weekend and Us and Sparty run our respective tables what is the more interesting matchup for ABC, two undefeated archrivals who would both probably be Top 10 or two one loss teams?

There is definitely a possibility we end up in that ABC night game spot if Penn State loses this Saturday.

wtf?  what is the logic?  Is she just joining you when you watch?  Would she watch it unprompted if you weren't watching it?  Does she have a rooting interest?

This is fascinating.

Also, whats a World Series? Go USA!

But seriously... I'm curious about the first part.

I can't stand watching baseball on tv, so definitely not joining me. And it's every year, like clockwork. No real rooting interest unless Detroit were playing, so yeah, it's weird man. I don't question it, she doesn't give me any shit for all the football and basketball I watch. I just don't understand it.

Fox doesn’t always get the first pick of the week, they just get the first pick of the year, which they always use on Michigan-OSU).

The assignment process beyond that is nebulous, but it’s been publicly confirmed by Fox execs they don’t get the first pick every week. (https://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/ct-big-ten-espn-fox-sports-20170724-story.html - sorry, don’t know how to embed links)

So it’s possible OSU-Penn State will end up on ESPN. I’m pretty sure it was in 2018.

The dual agreement part of the night game provision doesn't go into effect until last three weeks of the regular season. I also don't know that there is a limit to the amount of night games a team can play in, just a minimum number that they have to host over a certain period of time.

Here is a decent Cleveland.com article about "tolerances" and Big Ten night games/road night games.

  • They're decided between athletic directors.
  • Each school picks their limit or "tolerance" level of night games.
  • Tolerances only apply to games "controlled" by the Big Ten.
  • The tolerances were written into the most recent Fox/ESPN TV deal.
  • The November thing isnt even mentioned here which causes me to think it more of a guideline than a rule.
  • All of it appears to be pretty fuzzy on specifics.
  • Urban Meyer might not be the man of integrity we all once thought he was.

You know what else went down on a Halloween weekend against Michigan State.....?

This.

Screw your plans. Eat Sweettarts and Laffy Taffy some other weekend.

Or don't.

I don't really care what you'll be doing. :)

Go blue.

That 3:30 start is plastered into my head because it was a decently warm day so I wore a t-shirt (and maybe shorts?) to the game. But by the end of regulation the weather had cooled way down, and by triple OT, I was freezing.

My friends and I went to Ashley's to get dinner and celebrate, and while they waited for the food to come, I ran down to Steve and Barry's and got a Michigan sweatshirt. Here we are, 17 years later, and I think of that game every time I put on my favorite sweatshirt.

Plan on your plans. Don't worry about the sparty telecast. See it at a normal time or don't.

Put another way, you'll likely be happier years from now reminiscing about that wild Halloween you planned on for months, vs "remember watching some game on TV."

Put a 3rd way, unless doing so invokes a Michigan curse (like it would with me), why not DVR the game? Have your holiday experience, and unless you get spoiled, have the same spontaneous TV experience, with the benefit of skipping commercials.

Dont listen to deceased and former country crooner Slim Whitman. He's almost 100 years old, dead, and probably not even a Michigan fan.

I'm considerably younger, alive, and can firmly say that every great memory of my life was based on a sporting event I watched on TV, and not some dumb party with some dumb people you'll probably never see or talk to again.

Rose Marie called Slim, she wants you to get your priorities straight and watch the Michigan game!
