Most QBs on roster in 30 years

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

When Zach Gentry and John O'Korn arrive on campus, Michigan will have 10 QBs on the roster and may still add another one.

The last time Michigan had double digit QBs on the roster was 1985 when there were 11.

A look at the QB club of 1985-

# Player Year Ht/Wt Hometown/HS
2 Bob Cernak So. 6'2/200 Lockport, IL/Lockport
3 Russell Rein Jr. 6'0/190 Oak Lawn, IL/Marist
4 Jim Harbaugh R-Jr. 6'3/200 Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto
5 John Whitledge So. 6'2/198 Delton, MI/Delton-Kellogg
6 Demetrius Brown Fr. 6'1/184 Miami, FL/Miami Beach
9 Michael Taylor Fr. 6'1/195 Lincoln Heights, OH/Princeton
9 Trey McNeil So. 5'9/185 Fort Worth, TX/Paschal
10 Kyle Anderson So. 6'1/206 Drayton Palins, MI/Kettering
12 Chris Zurbrugg R-So. 6'1/192 Alliance, OH/Alliance
16 Scott Crawford Fr. 6'3/190 Rawson, OH/Rawson
18 Mike Jones Fr. 6'3/220 Bridgeport, CT/Harding

That #4 guy did pretty well that year.

That seems like a lot of QBs, but if increased competition improves play, or at least gives us a better chance of finding "the guy", then I guess that's ok.

It's pretty damn obvious to me that lack of QB competition was a huge issue the last couple of years. For Shane Morris to go through an entire freshman season and only be able to run about three plays in that Kansas State bowl game was downright criminal. I'm assuming he's not "mentally challenged", so that is entirely on the coaches for not creating competition.

remember watching that game in disbelief.  We actually could not call any pass plays.  When we did, it looked like he truly did not know the plays.  Other players were kind of looking around like "this is awkward" but were not really doing anything to encourage him or show any belief that they had a prayer of gaining yards.

That was one of the strangest things I've ever seen in a college football game. I just couldn't imagine how any player for a top tier program could be so unprepared. I agree that we need competition. Just seeing 10 QBs on the roster really jumps out at you.

It is important to note that 5 of those 11 (Rein, Harbaugh, Brown, Taylor, Zurbrugg) started at least 1 game over the course of their careers.  I'm reasonably certain nobody said that there were too many quarterbacks on the roster then.

In 1985 I was living in Miami, FL where they covered the Miami Whoricanes relentlessly. The coverage was akin to modern coverage with lots of off-season alanlysis, naval gazing, and Monday morning QB'ing.

I called the sports desk at the Ann Arbor News and asked why they didn't cover Michigan Football with more vigor. I don't know who I spoke with but he snorted and hung up on me. But no, in 1985 no one in, around, or covering the program was questing Bo's roster.

The current stockpiling of QB's indicates to me that JH thinks that position is the one most in need of an upgrade/improvement.

By extension, that means that the DL, OL, and ST are doing much better than last year already.

Undefeated going into The Game.

an old saying - "if you have two quarterbacks than you don't have a quarterback."  I wonder what the saying is when you have eight quarterbacks.

Maybe, "if you have eight quarterbacks than you really need to get that quarterback from Iowa."

I believe the saying is, "If you have two quarterbacks, you don't have a quarterback. But if you have 10 quarterbacks, they all put their fists together in a circle and morph into one MEGA-QB"

What kind of attrition are we going to have in a year or two as having this many QBs doesn't seem feasible......especially if the plan is to add 2 more every year.

Well Romano probably won't be on the roster when O'Korn and Gentry get to campus, right? Otherwise he would count as a scholarship, since he's on scholarship in another sport.

Hmmm let's see if that would be a good team to model......

1. In the discussion for Bo's BEST team

2. Finished the season ranked #2

3. Beat Notre Dame, Michigan State and OSU

4. Beat Nebraska in their Bowl Game

Yeah count me in the group that thinks that if we're trying to copy a roster in Michigan's past - 1985 is a pretty God Damn good one to follow.

1985 Michigan V Iowa is one of the B1G network's "go to" games when doing their classics.  Other B1G Network & ESPN Classic favorites include:

1974 Michigan - OSU

1979 Michigan - Michigan State

1985 MIchigan - Iowa

1987 Michigan - Michigan State

1995 Michigan - Northwestern

2000 Michigan - Purdue

2000 Michigan - Northwestern

2001 Michigan - OSU

2001 Michigan - Michigan State

2005 Michigan - OSU

2006 Michigan - OSU

We must be good fans to follow the losingest team in college football.  At least according to the guys selecting the "classic" games to watched.

B1G has been kinder. ESPN Classic religiously showed every horrible loss this program had from Bo all the way through Lloyd.

The index card game against Notre Dame and the Hail Mary against Colorado were shown at least twice a week for an entire year.

Around 2004ish, I actually counted every single game I had seen on Classic and our record was over 20 games below .500.

College football on ESPN Classic was dominated by old Michigan games for a decade. By 2004, there were 58 different Michigan games shown. The school with the second most games was Notre Dame with 27. Florida State was third with 23. That's quite a difference between the top three.

That's why I started my YouTube account. Classic motivated me to upload every win I had no matter how big or small. Well, that and the fact there was shockingly very little Michigan football content on YouTube in 2007.

I think part of this scenario is the way coach handles practices. With numerous qbs we can field practice teams and make sure that backup skill players are getting reps. This way everyone is participating all the time and getting a decent amount of reps.
Am I making any sense? Otherwise I have no idea why we would need 10 guys.

Harbaugh - 86 season

Brown - 88 season

Taylor - 89 season

If we get 3 Rose Bowls out of the 10 on the roster this year, I think most of us will be satisfied.
