It's going to hit rural areas so fucking hard. People are socially distancing already in higher population density areas, and that's too little too late. The next 12 weeks are going to be a goddamn disaster.

candidly, a grocery store is a pleasant convenience for us but not a necessity.  we've got food for many months and we own the means of production. i even  built a bio-diesel reactor in the barn years ago so if fuel is disrupted we can go back into production on that.

I just left Santa Barbara, Ca and I am now in Grand Junction, CO on my way back to Ann Arbor by car.  Hotels and restaurants in Santa Barbara are 2/3 empty or worse.  I was talking to a waitress tonight at a local Applebees and she said 2/3 of their wait staff are no longer needed.

Anecdotal data does not a case make for any of us, but the actions of financial markets and federal legislation recently passed on a bipartisan basis should tell you something.

Watch Joe Rogan's podcast from this week (Thursday, I think). He mentions that he went out to several clubs in the LA area and they were all packed. That was after he'd had Michael Osterholm on his show, who told him that without social distancing, things would get much, much worse.

Bottom line: many, many people just don't give a shit.

Fox has been downplaying the threat, so if that's the only news you get the virus is a hoax to crash the market and isn't any worse than the flu.

If we were testing as many people as Korea is, all nonessential businesses would be closed and people wouldn't be leaving their homes.

Shit is going to get real, and fast.

Agreed. This shit is ridiculous. The breakout is nothing to scoff at, but if people do the research and look at the history of similar outbreaks, they'd see where this really ranks on the scales... of mortality rate, infection rate, recovery rate, you name it.

Do your part, be conscious of what you're doing with your hygiene, make smart decisions, but Jesus, the world is not coming to an end, and no, this administration is not to blame.

You fucking idiots and people like you are going to get a lot of people killed. The really sick thing is that even when that happens, you likely still won't acknowledge reality because your "news" source will be spinning another conspiracy theory. You're all insane. And dumb as shit.

Oh crap your on to everyone now and found out it’s just a hoax. You have to give the world credit though for staging this and keeping it just from Republicans   Well now that you know someone put the word out to the entire world that we can all stop acting like there’s a deadly virus and go back to normal   Noting gets by you bluewings

Yes yes, because what liberals really just want is to be proven right, even if people die.

I'm truly sorry that you think that hundreds of millions of people want the other hundreds of millions of people want them to die. Ironic considering that my parents are both deeply conservative. I would like them very much to not die.

I also would like you to not die. If it means you laugh at me while I continue to chide you and others to do the right thing, then so be it.

Yeah, I agree with this. People of all political bents are basically selfish, especially for something as abstract as this. They might happily volunteer their time at a soup kitchen but they can't see any immediate payoff for sacrificing their life for an indeterminate amount of time and have no real reason to believe they will ever see the payoff. I mean, the payoff is nothing bad happens. This is why, I don't know, almost every country in the world is closing shit down. And the ones that can are closing private businesses. You can't trust the citizens.

His obvious point is that you politicized this by invoking Fox News, hoping get in a dur hur aren't the people in the party I'm not in all dummies.  He's saying no the people in the party you are in are also dummies.

Fox News and the people who watch it aren't all dumb, and they certainly haven't cornered the market on stupidity.  Business remains very good in that industry, on all channels and street corners.

You've hated Fox News for years and it's gotten you nowhere, your guffaws in the echo chamber have felt empty for a long while now.  You're just not ready to admit it.

Push through buddy.  Beyond the hate there's logic on the other side.  Or just go ahead and keep staring at that old moran meme and pretending to smile.

Doesn’t mean Fox News is doing what’s right today though. Telling ppl this is a hoax is just flat out irresponsible! We all have to realize our part in this, regardless of where we stand on the political aisle. Americans at time struggle with thinking about the greater good of others when it comes at the expense of their own desires. We all would love to go to a game, eat at our favorite crowded restaurant and go to a theme park. However, right now is not that time! The quicker we all just sit back and sacrifice some of our personal wants. The faster things will get back to normal in my opinion.

I just don’t know what can rightly be expected of people.  To seriously not leave their house?  I have developing children, how long am I supposed to basically give them a coloring book and tell them to figure it out?  Kids could really regress from what parents are being asked to do.  And if this is “going to get worse before it gets better,” still, are we talking about cancelling the rest of the school year?  Will kids get credit for the year?

Obviously I had some unpopular takes last week, and whatever, I took my beatings from the masses.  But in a real practical sense, if we shut life down for too long I am not sure how you can expect it is just going to “reopen” without real lasting repercussions.  I am all for a proportionate response, but what some people want other people to do seems rather disproportionate.  The local public libraries are closed?  Really?  There is like 20 people there tops at a “busy” time.  People need something to do.  Kids are going to rot away.

I’ve still never heard an answer from you on this question.   Do you not believe that the hospitals in Italy are overwhelmed?  if you do, do you believe that can’t happen hear?    Have you heard many actual medical experts who think that if we don’t take pretty drastic action it is likely to happen here?

If hospitals did get overwhemed, do you think we would somehow be immune from higher death rates from Covid-19 as well as other types of medical emergencies.

If you don’t believe all of that, it is easy to understand why you think this is an over reaction.   I would be very interested in knowing what is leading you to this belief, because of been searching for it.

If you do believe it, I can also understand that there are legitimate questions at each stage of this pandemic about how far we should go to limit people’s movement.   I personally think we could have taken a number of common sense solutions 6 weeks ago that would have put us in better shape and may have avoided some of the steps we are now taking.  I fear however that given where we are, the steps we are now taking may not be enough and the steps may soon get more restrictive.

My kids are older than yours and I’ve been trying to figure out what to let them do and not do also. Hearing numbers like over 50% of the population of the US could get this And having several congenital health issues that put me at high risk, I can assure you that I very much want this to be overblown.
