I don't know if hiring a Raven assistant makes more sense than promoting a current coach, but after how we've done with Macdonald and Minter, I certainly wouldn't be against it.

However John Harbaugh feels about Michigan at this point, if I'm a Raven assistant, I'd certainly take note of how the last two guys in the pipeline performed, and how it opened them up to pro DC jobs in a short time.

I’m sure Warde was very proactive and offered Minter a competitive offer to the NFL. Glad it takes a student protest to get an AD fired. The biggest thing holding back football is leadership/admin and that has always been the case. This school doesn’t deserve Jim Harbaugh. It’s the biggest difference between us and OSU and is painfully large. If we couldn’t make it happen with a coach who just won the title, it ain’t happening with anybody.

Larry Foote has not expressed interest in coaching in college, not even at Michigan. I'd welcome him but it would be a big shock if came back to Ann Arbor so I'm not holding my breath.

I would think Clinkscale would be the DC replacement. The players love him. Sherrone said in his presser that this is all about the players.

Very sorry to see Jesse Minter leaving.

I don’t get the infatuation with Orr. This year is only his 3rd year as a coach in any capacity and he’s never coached in college. Michigan is a top-10 program and has the talent to have a top-3 defense next year. Their defensive coordinator should not be someone entering his 4th year of coaching ever.

Macdonald had been coaching for over a decade and had been a part of the Ravens’ organization for 7 years before coming to Michigan. Minter had also been a coach for over a decade and had extensive experience coaching in college, including stints as a defensive coordinator at 3 different schools. Orr’s résumé doesn’t come close to comparing to those 2.

Macdonald and Orr both got to Baltimore the same year; Orr was a player who went from a UDFA to an All-Pro before having to retire.  And Macdonald's early involvement in Baltimore largely reads like a gopher/grinder of sorts; he was being exposed to coaching at the NFL level but his only experience before that was as a GA/QC at UGa for a handful of years.  The actual positional coaching history is about the same, as Orr was various linebacker coaches at Jax and Baltimore for 3 years, while Macdonald was a DB and LB coach for 3 years before coming to UM.  So the gap here isn't that significant, especially if you consider the fact Orr is 5 years younger than Macdonald and was, again, a really good pro player before his career was cut short.

Minter I agree, but at the same time it helped having a dad who was a college HC to help open doors and get that initial experience.  I wouldn't necessarily punish a guy who is 9 years younger and likely didn't have those connections.

I'm not saying you need to bring in a Baltimore guy just because, but at the same time if you have this groundswell of consistent, shared schematic knowledge and success it isn't a problem going that direction versus trying to get some older guy who's going to come in and muck up your continuity.  It's a big reason I I'm not high on Leonhard, as he clearly wants to be an HC/NFL DC so if you bring him in you're likely going to only have him for a year or two and there's a transition cost with that.

Nobody knows if that’s the case though. We know John recommended Macdonald and Minter, the idea that any random Ravens staff member must also be a plug and play high level DC is magical thinking

at this point it’s kind of weird to me how our fans want random inexperienced Ravens coaches but recoil at promoting our own guys who’ve been in the same system for three years

Orr's experience is not that different than Mike Macdonald when he got hired as DC. Both were defensive assistants for 1 year before graduating to be position coaches for the next 3.

Add to it that he was an All Pro playing in the Raven's system.

I would hope that Moore would reach out to John Harbaugh to get his feelings on Orr, just like Jim did when John recommended Macdonald and Minter.

The infatuation with Orr is that he matches the profile of the last two guys. And as fans, all we see is the surface stuff. We don't know how well guys actually coach or what they're good at doing.

And maybe he is the same sort of bright light that Macdonald was. In which case Michigan should hire him.

But maybe he's just a guy and his strengths lie elsewhere, in which case Michigan should look somewhere else.

Something Harbaugh did well, particularly late, was identify what guys were actually good at doing and put them in position to do it. That's how we got Moore moving up the food chain while guys with more name recognition stayed put or went elsewhere. Jim Harbaugh's synergy with brother John was a huuuuuge asset to the program and is one of the huge things we now lose with Jim's departure to Los Angeles. Our connection with the superb Ravens organization has been largely severed, and with it the terrific resources that we were able to leverage into the program Michigan became.

That will be one of Moore's biggest handicaps compared to the Harbaugh regime, honestly. Harbaugh could have stayed and still lost Minter and/or other assistants, but he had the right connections to replace them. Will Moore?

It seems like John farmed out Macdonald and Minter because he wanted them to go get coordinator experience elsewhere. Minter went to Vanderbilt when Macdonald came to Michigan.

Worked out great with Macdonald. Almost worked out like a dream for him if Macdonald leaves for a HC job and then he could have had Minter. Too bad for him his brother went to the NFL and stole Minter.

So if he feels the same about Orr, he could try to get Orr experience at Michigan.

I hope you are right because this could be the real edge the program has going forward. A lot of places will throw (NIL) money at their programs hoping to buy their way to a championship. Others have adopted some aspect of the professional game (e.g. passing attack) but to run an actual NFL defensive scheme seems unique.

Everyone is throwing nil money around. Michigan players want to get paid as they should like the rest of top ten schools. You would be naive to think nil wasn’t a part the motivation to come back and a chance at a natty.

Top 10 Schools in NIL 2023

1-Texas $19.9 million

2-Bama $16 million

3-OSU $13.6

4-USC $13.6

5-UGA $13.4

6-Colorado $12.3

7-Michigan $11.6 million

8-Oregon $11.6 million

9-FSU $10.1 million

10-PSU $9.9 million
