Resigning after 12 seasons at the helm of the program.
Michigan water polo coach Matt Anderson resigns from position
I am his children's child care provider. I am shocked. He is a very classy person. WOW
-EDIT- With a phone call to my boss, he was offered a job somewhere else. At least there is no drama. Good luck Coach!
-Another edit- Coach Nuss' daughter plays water polo.. for Michigan.
Obviously he leaves as the winningest coach in program history since the program began in 2001.
- 332-133 career record
- 10 CWPA Division Championships
- 4 CWPA Championships
- 4 NCAA Tournament apperances
The NCAA Tournament stat is impressive given only EIGHT teams make it in and ZERO schools from outside the state of California have finished 3rd place or higher.
Rough year for the team. They fought like hell, though. Horrific 3-10 start followed by 12 straight wins including two over ranked DI California schools to finish at a respectable 21-13 and third place at the CWPA Championship.
One of the things that I love about this site is that there is a spotlight on all of Michigan, not just on football and bastketball (not that I don't love those). I had no idea that the water polo team is this good. A friend of mine played for Anderson, but I never knew about this level of excellence. That's pretty cool! Thanks for sharing.
Pretty cool stat is that Michigan has the 4th most sports teams of any program in the country. Only Ohio, Penn State, and Stanford have more sports teams.
Brandon's fault that we don't have the most!
I want women's hockey so bad but Red is against it.
If they ever decide to build a new ice arena (and keep Yost iced up), then we'll probably get a women's team then
I think Water Polo being added was to keep the balance when Men's Soccer was added. They both made their Varsity debuts in the 2000-01 athletic season.
Why is Red against it?
Sharing the ice with another team puts the mens team at a disadvantage.
kick the Chelsea's and Skyline's teams to the ice cube. Problem solved.
I wonder if Babcock would support a women's hockey program when he is coach here at Michigan.
No curling? I'm outraged. OUTraged, I tell ya.
(Fair winds and following seas) to Coach Anderson. Given the way California schools dominate water polo, the accomplishments of Michigan water polo have been pretty amazing. I remember looking at the rankings, and saying to myself that being the best non-CA school, by a large margin, is a darn fine job. Here's hoping Coach Anderson every success for his future, and for Michigan's ability to recruit a worthy successor.
BTW, how about a lady coach for the ladies' team? Pat Summitt seemed to work out pretty well; I think the boys' club might be overlooking some good talent there.
If we build another ice arena, then we could have it. Fencing and mens volleyball are other possiblities. We should finish the south campus renovation first before we think about adding any sports.
I've always wondered why men's volleyball isn't a bigger sport. It's not very costly but few schools have a varsity team
Probably cause then you would have to have another women's team on scholarship to balance scholarships out
It's why water polo is varsity for women, but club for men.
Fencing WAS a varsity sport here. 1928-1932.
Sneak peek at my current project. Piecing together Michigan Fencing history. This was the 1930 team. Herbert Wiggers won the Western Conference Epee Championship, Michigan's only championship in the sport.
Many visits to Bentley/searching through old Michiganensians online is helping the project come to life. Was going to title it "The Lost Boys" but then I realized this is Fencing and not vampires.
This is too bad as Matt is a good friend of mine and was a great coach. The problem is that he really had the hardest recruiting job of any coach in the athletic department. Basically ALL water polo talent is from California or Arizona. Convincing 10 or so California girls to come to the bitter cold as opposed to going to UCLA, Berkeley, Stanford or UCSB, is a tough sell. The real problem was when Princeton, Harvard and Brown basically started giving non-academic schollies for kids whose parents don't make six figures about six years ago made it even harder. The kids who wanted to leave could get partial aid at UM or a free ride at an ivy.
If he ends up at a school in California he will win a national championship.
Thanks for clarifying the challenges he faced. I'd say he did one hell of a job considering the up hill battle it became with recruiting. What a shame if it is true he had to resign. I don't see it being any easier for the next coach, but then I'm no expert in the sport.
Brandon can't have a championship or you are out policy with sports that UM has an easy time recruiting for and a different policy for those sports we have traditionally struggled with. But do yourself a favor and go look at all the water polo banners hanging at the natatorium (there are a lot of division championships) and ask yourself if anyone could do better.
Did he leave because there's no wifi?
My mom works with his wife. It was a resignation in a VERY relative sense of the term. When HR says you have 45 minutes to vacate your office, it's not resignation.
this thread took an unexpected turn. Sounds like there could be a little more to this story than meets the eye.
Or did Brandon simply want to get the cleaning company in before his discount coupon expired at the end of April?
That is completely wrong. Matt and his wife have been contemplating if they want their son in our kindergarten program for 3 weeks because "We may be moving for Matt's work" So, no. The 45 minute bit is not true.
Your mom is a LIAR!! /s
Matt was told at the beginning of the season that there would be specific expectations. So he knew what was going to happen if he did not get to the NCAAs. The douche part for Brandon (and there is always a douche part with him) is he begged Matt to stay a couple years back when Matt got a great offer from a very prestigious school. I have no doubt that Matt will be hired quickly, but will be sad when he and his family have to move from Michigan.
my mom's best friend's kid hangs out with his daughter (if he has one)... and she says...
According to my wife, who played for Matt, this was less of a stepping down and more of a pushing out. Brandon wants championships at every level.
We could start with the football team, please.
He sure has missed the boat with Football.
I heard it was pressure from animal rights groups because too many horses were drowning.
