Michigan vs OSU: QBs since 2001

Submitted by stopthewnba on

At some point this has to even out, no?

Navarre (01-03) and Henne (04-06) were the last real stability Michigan's enjoyed.  Since 2007, Michigan has been forced to play 7 (8?) quarterbacks vs OSU:

2007 - Ryan Mallet (Henne hurt/ineffective)

2008 - Nick Sheridan

2009 - Tate Forcier

2010 - Tate Forcier (Denard hurt)

2011 - Denard Robinson

2012 - Devin Gardner (was a WR all season, Denard hurt)

2013 - Devin Gardner (broke foot in game)

2014 - Devin Gardner

2015 - Jake Rudock (knocked out w/shoulder injury)

2016 - Wilton Speight (injured shoulder)

2017 - John O'Korn (?) (Speight/Brandon Peters injured)

-----------------------

Since 2001, OSU has used 6 quarterbacks TOTAL:

Craig Krenzel, Troy Smith, Braxton Miller, Terelle Pryor, JT Barrett (3 starts each), and Todd Boeckman (ha-ha).

So because OSU has only had 2 fewer starting qbs since 2001 that is why we are losing? Right.. just another excuse why this program is a disaster

correct.

But...after a loss a lot of people don't want to hear facts or rational thought.

Not happy to see M with 3 losses, but...

OSU has been absolutely blown out of the water 3 times in the last 12 months.  They have a stellar roster and staff.   Yet they have been blown out 3 times.

And 3 losses (or 4 if M loses again) is not terrible for a super young roster in what is (for those willling to consider facts) a rebuild year after a record setting number of guys getting drafted, plus some very key injuries.

Have people seen FSU this year?  Is Jimbo Fisher suddenly and overpaid idiot (as too many posting here are suggesting about JH)?  Get real people.

Fucking give this man a trophy. MgoUsers are calling each other 'walmart wolverines' in the Braylon thread... this place is fucking crazy sometimes. Some of these people don't have an ounce of perspective. We're they expecting to go 11-1 with a team that's so young it wears Pampers?

thing at high profile football programs. We used to have that at Michigan. And now we have an injured starter at qb or the prospect of starting a backup because the starter is out, which sort of impacts your ability to compete on a high level with other teams with veteran qbs.

program stability. The poor pass blocking led to our QB injuries this year and the lack of depth at QB is all about program stability. OSU has been the most stable program in the country since around 2001 and, well, we've been a train wreck.

JH will have a Big Ten contender once he can establish excellence and continuity at QB.

He also needs a better o-line.

Other than those two things, the rest of the pieces really are already in place.

Gotta be patient, however, until the o-line and QB situations get straightened out.

Peters and McCaffrey are RS freshman and a freshman.  The o-line is not conistent at pass protection, but guys like Onwenu and Ruiz are promising for underclass guys.

You have to look at facts, instead of just saying 'Harbaugh sucks can't win the big game etc.'

Only 30 guys in the 2014 and 2015 classes combined (and the quality level in those classes was not championship level either).  Those are are the classes that normally would be the core of the team this year.

We've definately had a lot of bad luck with injuries at the QB position.  We've also really struggled with the o-line for quite a few years now.  I think the o-line has put our QB's health in danger.  But, the big thing I notice is that our roster simply can't handle injuries the way OSU's can.  If we get injuries we're playing true freshman or transfers we've crossing our fingers will work out.  If OSU gets injuries they're playing other top recruits that are just a year younger than the guy ahead of them.  Our coaching instability the past 10 years has really done a number on our roster.  This will get better next year, but we're not there yet.

Has been the difference between us being a good team over the past 3 years, and a great team. We have almost no depth, especially this year. Teams like OSU, Clemson, and Alabama have guys sitting on the bench that would start for almost every other team.

In a couple of years having a third year guy like Ambry Thomas playing behind fourth year guys Lavert Hill and David Long will make all the difference. Jaylen Kelly-Powell looks like a good young prospect but he is a true freshman and with Hill out today he got picked on, and it hurt.

The QB injuries have been so frustrating, especially since OSU runs their QB and you'd expect them to get an injury or two. You would think this is just dumb luck, but I do think there is a direct correlation to the poor OL talent since Henne left. We had one decent line since then. Bad OL means QBs getting crushed like today.

When Michigan was dominating Ohio State in the '80s and '90s, it was because we had superior QB play.

We were trotting out future NFL QBs like Jim Harbaugh and Tom Brady, while they were trotting out Stanley Jackson and Steve Bellisari.

But that has not happened since 2003.  In fact, we have not had a senior QB who was not injured face Ohio State since John Navarre in 2003.  Before that, it used to happen all the time.

The ones I remember:

Leach '78 - Won,

Wangler '80 - Won,

Smith '83 - Won,

Harbaugh '86 - Won,

Brown '88 (final year) - Won,

Taylor '89 - Won,

Grbac '92 - Tie,

Collins '94 - Lost,

Driesbach '96 - Won,

Greise '97 - Won,

Brady '99 - Won,

Henson '00 (final year) - Won,

Navarre '03 - Won.

Senior / Final Year Michigan QBs who are not injured are  11-1-1 against Ohio State since 1978.

Wow.

We want to beat Ohio State, we need more of that.

Besides the fact this is a pretty big stretch (M has had 2 more diff starters than OSU since 2001), 2 of your stated starters listed are wrong.

In 2007, Henne started and played most of the game (Mallett only had 3 pass attempts)

In 2010, Denard started and played over 1/2 of the game.

Of those OSU qb’s ended drafted as a qb? Krenzel, and he only lasted 2 years. JT will be a receiver if he ever uses up his eligibility.

Navarre in '01 --> that should have been Henson and a W had he not taken Yankee cash.

Sheridan in '08 -> not his fault, he would have had competition to start at Albion

Forcier in '09 -> reminded me of Navarre in '01

We really only had THREE great performances in those games.

Navarre in '03 and DRob in '11 and Devin in '13 (until the pick on the 2-pt pass)

Of all those losses, the worst was Lloyd punting out of FG formation for 22 yards late in '05. Henne was good enough that day with NO running game to win.
