Michigan Trash Talking Before Fiesta Bowl

Submitted by WalterWhite_88 on December 31st, 2022 at 11:38 PM

The ESPN article about the Fiesta Bowl mentions that there was a video of Junior Colson where he acts like he doesn't know what conference TCU plays in, and Dykes passed the video around to his team before the game and it added extra motivation/energy for them.

This is a consistent theme with Michigan this year where they talk too much trash before big games. Why not keep it classy and not allow the opponent to gain any extra motivation?

Havent heard anything about that, but be prepared to get negged. If true shame on them.

The team and last year havent seemed do so much trash talking like the 2015-2020 teams and if they did say something before the biggest game and werent prepared thats just crazy to me.

One player supposedly makes one comment - with minimal context, on a video that you cannot locate. And you suggest it’s a program character issue.  Says a lot about you. Tough loss. Great season. Fantastic players. Go blue.

The negs are coming but he’s dang right. JJ’s bragging about facing the 3-3-5 defense and promising “smash-fest” wasn’t helpful either.

You can’t underestimate teams or give them locker room bulletin board material. Be cool, be professional, and don’t get a big head. All business. Flag planting in Columbus, trashing TCU, etc can come back to haunt you.

All in all, great season but this should be a learning experience.

I want Michigan players to be self-confident before big games.  That is not having a big head, or trash-talking.  Words of self-confidence do not come back and haunt you, but thoughts of self-doubt will drag you down.  There is no “learning experience” to be gotten from this game regarding the players’ pre-game conduct.  Of course, they can study the game film and learn something about themselves.

One can be confident without giving the other team additional motivation. I don’t know exactly how much trash talk motivates as everyone is motivated by different stuff but when I played sports whether it be a pickup game of hoops or a pickup football game or back when I played baseball I would play with a chip on my shoulder when people lipped off.

Now not only am I already fueled by my competitive drive but now I’m looking to show you up.

It’s sort of like when Day promised to drop 100. If you don’t think Michigan players didn’t take that personally and gave a little extra, I don’t know what to tell you. I’ve seen some crazy sports feats where players give a little extra running on pure spite and emotion. Look up Carlos Guillen’s home run off Weaver due to taking it personally how he lipped off at his teammate. Spite is a powerful motivator.

Call me old-fashioned but I think teams are better off keeping quiet before a game and letting their actions speak for them. TCU was challenged and met the challenge. Look up their rushing/passing defense numbers. They elevated tonight and I can’t help but wonder how much of that was because of the trash talk.

I don't think we trash talked. We SLEEPWALKED through the practices for this game and it showed when we were down 21-3.

I think the character of the 2023 team will be a much better playoff experience.

But so damn glad Ohio choked!

I'm just saying the looked focused and working hard from what I saw. We had four weeks to prepare. Why would they need to be hitting a few days before the game? Are you really saying if we'd been full on hitting this Wednesday and someone important had gotten hurt, you'd have said "That was necessary, good coaching move" ??

The reality is they were down 21-3 because of two redzone empty possessions, one asinine td overturn and a pick 6 at that point despite actually having more yardage. I don't think being down 21-3 had anything to do with a lack of preparedness as much as a perfect storm of those aforementioned things.

The score was a lot more lopsided than the game had gone.  IIRC, we had outgained them even at that point in the game.   TCU only moved the ball on two drives in the first half.  The difference was simply that they finished those two drives and we didn't finish ours - and the pick six.

I understand being upset right now, I really do. But every Michigan fan who's still awake needs to drink a tall glass of water and hit the sack. This too shall pass. Go Blue.

I hate these takes.  Your pissed.  We all are.  But this is not trash talking.  I seriously didn’t know what conference they were in.
I don’t mind players doing a little talking it’s part of the game.  These kids are confident and have every reason to be.

Oh for fuck's sake.  Michigan went undefeated this year in football until this game and talked shit before it.  Every team that's good talks shit.  Hell, bad teams talk shit just as much. TCU players kept talking about how they didn't think UM had played anyone like TCU and their offense and blah blah blah.

This place can be so insufferable with this debate over "classiness" and "Michigan Man" and all this archaic, irrelevant shit that lets fans enjoy this fake sense of moral superiority and it's beyond tiring.  Michigan didn't lose because someone did a little trash talking.  They lost because they made some bad decisions, including two pick sixes from a guy who seemingly only smiles and is deferential to a fault, and TCU did just enough to win.

Haven’t seen anything directly or indirectly referring to Colston making any comments like that. But, in a general sense I felt like Michigan did do a little too much talking in general leading up to the game and I think to some degree they paid for it.

Making comments asserting you’re the more physical team, and you’re going to “smash” your opponents defensive scheme will always be interpreted as a questioning of physical and mental toughness. There is no reason to give your opponent an additional motivation other than the fact it’s a playoff game.

If you want to be confident privately that’s fine. Publicly, acknowledge your opponents successful season, call them a challenging opponent and say you’ll have to play your best game for an opportunity to win. Anything short of that is emotional jet fuel to an underdog that’s already going to be jacked up  for a big game where the narrative expects them to lose.

So TCU wouldn't have put out 100% effort but for the trash-talking.  God, I hate these takes.

[pre-game pep talks are also over-rated]
