Michigan Stadium scoreboard upgrades underway (pics)
The new scoreboards are part of a $41 million project that will improve numerous aspects of the fan experience at the Big House and other athletics facilities
- $8 million will fund “production room upgrades” inside the Crisler Center. Those facilities serve multiple different athletic venues, including the Crisler Center itself, Michigan Stadium, Yost Ice Arena, field hockey, soccer, indoor track, baseball and softball. The production room is also where Michigan produces content for the Big Ten Network and its digital platforms.
- $12 million will fund a replacement of the Michigan Stadium video boards in the north and south end zones. “We will be going larger,” Rademacher said.
- An additional $4 million will fund “permanent safety additions for access” to the new video boards.
- $5 million will be used to replace the audio system at Michigan Stadium. This includes the audio installations in the seating bowl and around the concourse.
- The estimated cost of site work and design fees is $12 million.

KA-CHING!!
In Earl Jones voice: We have the MONEY!
December 8th, 2022 at 10:09 AM ^
I'm thinking Arby's guy's voice. OK. James Earl Jones is better.
December 7th, 2022 at 8:31 PM ^
That should be our permanent score board. The other one should say 42-27.
December 7th, 2022 at 8:45 PM ^
They should also pay to put one in Ohio Stadium that says 45-23
December 7th, 2022 at 9:21 PM ^
They could list “away game results”, and note the date and score…
December 8th, 2022 at 9:14 AM ^
Better yet, we should buy the rights to name Ohio Stadium. We can afford it.
December 7th, 2022 at 8:46 PM ^
Go big or go home. Given the size of our stadium, we need large screens so the look correct to the overall scale.
December 7th, 2022 at 9:59 PM ^
Is that the new scoreboard?! It’s GLORIOUS!!!
December 7th, 2022 at 8:30 PM ^
Scoreboards look like they are twice as big, but all along the lengthwise axis.
December 7th, 2022 at 8:48 PM ^
I'll take the old ones if nobody wants them?
December 7th, 2022 at 8:57 PM ^
Must be some man cave.
December 7th, 2022 at 8:55 PM ^
Wi-fi, please! Other stadiums have it; it can be done.
December 7th, 2022 at 9:28 PM ^
Yeah, I must have missed how much is being spent on upgrading the wi-fi access.
December 8th, 2022 at 7:27 AM ^
If they want to do “fan participation” light shows, the WiFi needs to improve.
December 8th, 2022 at 12:46 AM ^
^^ Honestly, I would rank in-stadium WiFi above scoreboards as an unmet long-standing need.
December 8th, 2022 at 8:53 AM ^
The WiFi experience at Ford Field was great. I can't believe that this is the one thing the Loins (sic) can do that the Michigan Wolverines cannot.
December 8th, 2022 at 8:32 AM ^
WiFi was great at the Horseshoe this year but it was only available to Verizon subscribers. I presume Verizon is onsite with equipment trucks for each game.
Lucas Oil had decent WiFi and an enclosed stadium might provide more opportunities for wireless access points within reach of every phone.
These are guesses on the WiFi infrastructure at each stadium. I’m not a wireless communications expert nor do I play one on TV. Also, I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

But you are MacGyver...
December 8th, 2022 at 8:41 AM ^
MacGyver can handle ANY situation - the more challenging, the better…
December 8th, 2022 at 9:01 AM ^
Well played 1Va and Amazin, well played!
December 7th, 2022 at 8:55 PM ^
Probably won’t happen but I really hope they cover the ugly steel scoreboard columns with brick, or do something to make the supports look better...not just add more of them. Quite an eyesore juxtaposed with the rest of the stadium.
December 7th, 2022 at 8:59 PM ^
Or at least paint them blue or something.
December 7th, 2022 at 9:04 PM ^
Put a halo around them
December 7th, 2022 at 11:02 PM ^
The halo! Ha ha ha!
December 8th, 2022 at 12:11 AM ^
Just make them giant Kraft macaroni noodles
December 8th, 2022 at 1:35 PM ^
Ya know, I don't hate them but I agree they'd look a lot nicer if they were covered with a brick facade.
December 7th, 2022 at 8:57 PM ^
With that much scoreboard space, I hope there’s room for a live out of town scoreboard. There have been virtually no updates during games the past couple of seasons other than Slippery Rock.
December 8th, 2022 at 7:31 AM ^
Ufer, the only out of town score that matters is Slippery Rock…. Ok, I’m just kidding. I don’t think a “running / live” out of town, Top 25, or B1G score section is necessary. But, an update on those scores during a few three minute media timeouts would be nice.
December 7th, 2022 at 9:04 PM ^
Repaint the seats
December 7th, 2022 at 9:18 PM ^
Okay, so I understand Brandon fucked up and didn’t get scoreboards that could be maintained in a cost effective way so I understand needing new ones. But can we give it a rest for a while after that? The stadium doesn’t need bigger scoreboards and we (rightfully) don’t sell ad space so there’s no revenue being generated. I’d like to see the athletic department spend money on things like adding women’s hockey and men’s volleyball or whatever facility improvements Bakich requested rather than shit like this
December 7th, 2022 at 10:38 PM ^
Not to sound like a dick, but why in this day and age would the athletic department spend that kind of money to bring in 2 more sports no one will watch? Women's hockey and men's volleyball would definitely not bring in any revenue.
December 7th, 2022 at 10:49 PM ^
Only two or three sports do, that's not their purpose.
December 7th, 2022 at 10:49 PM ^
Double post, oops.
December 8th, 2022 at 1:39 PM ^
I think the point has already been made, but the intent of collegiate athletics is not, and should not be, to generate revenue.
December 7th, 2022 at 9:28 PM ^
My company is supplying the concrete for the project, the first pour will be tomorrow afternoon. It was supposed to be today, but the foundation company had problems. I will be on site to make sure the concrete is up to par, and will definitely post pictures.
December 7th, 2022 at 11:21 PM ^
Only up to par? Let's shoot for birdie
December 8th, 2022 at 12:15 AM ^
Its concrete, man. You want it to be even
December 8th, 2022 at 12:45 AM ^
Yeah, but what do you know?
December 8th, 2022 at 8:14 AM ^
Nothing
December 8th, 2022 at 8:18 AM ^
Is that you, Jon Snow?
December 9th, 2022 at 11:12 AM ^
No, its Dave Brandon
December 7th, 2022 at 10:08 PM ^
I certainly won't complain. Any scoreboard that can be read easily from the top floors of Tower Plaza is a good thing.
December 8th, 2022 at 12:59 AM ^
It’s not my money, but 5 million seems like a lot for audio upgrades.
December 8th, 2022 at 8:00 AM ^
Yea, for 5 million you could get 1/8th of a season for Aaron Judge.
December 8th, 2022 at 1:41 PM ^
Here I was thinking $5M actually sounded a little low for a sound system in a 110,000-seat stadium! But I also work for the federal government.
December 8th, 2022 at 8:16 AM ^
but the tunnel..... aren't we doing anything about the tunnel?
/s/
December 8th, 2022 at 8:43 AM ^
PA, rumor has it - the Lloyd Carr tunnel may (I emphasize MAY) be repainted.
December 8th, 2022 at 1:41 PM ^
They say that taupe is very soothing.
December 8th, 2022 at 3:47 PM ^
On the real though, I would like to see them bring the brick all the way through the tunnel and make it nicer.
Make it a brick/concrete floor too - with each brick/concrete block showing the final score from each of the soon-to-be 1000 wins
