Michigan St fans doing #BoycottTheHeisman. But why?

As most here already know, there's lots of complaints from Michigan St fans over Aidan Hutchinson being a Heisman finalist but not Kenneth Walker lll.

Here's a link to a list of tweets to that effect:

A link to Spartan 247 message board complaints:

So a step beyond the complaints is a movement to "#BoycottTheHeisman".

At the link is a bunch of tweets for the boycott. https://twitter.com/search?q=%23BoycottTheHeisman&src=typeahead_click&f=top

But really, is there a case for Kenneth Walker lll to be a finalist? He came out blazing at the start of the season. But faded toward the end of the season. Heisman candidates should finish strong, shouldn't they?

So what is all the complaining from Michigan St fans all about? Because it looks like this:

You aren’t the best player in college football if your team got they ass whipped by Purdue. Quiet now, Sparty, the Adults are talking.

Dude rushed for:

  • 3.2 ypc vs Nebraska in a 23-20 game. Nebraska won 3 games this year.
  • 3.7 ypc vs Indiana a 20-15 game. Indiana won 2 games this year.
  • Total of 25 yards vs OSU

He also failed to crack 100 yards in 4 of their 12 games this year. He’s good, but he ain’t that good.

Relax.

By typical Heisman criteria, I think Walker pretty clearly deserves to be there.  He had a very good statistical year at a skill position, he had a monster game in his team's biggest game, and the difference between him and his backup showed just how much of his performance was on him vs. his team.  Any reasonably good qb could have done what Stroud and Young did with the talent around them.

He probably couldn't win because of the Ohio State game, but at the same time it wasn't his decision to abandon the run.  I have to expect a better outcome for him and the team if they had kept with the running game.

If we are going solely by stats and how the team did, why wouldn’t CMU fans be pissed their RB didn’t make the cut? CMU actually placed higher in their division than MSU (they were 2nd, MSU was 3rd), he had more total yards, nearly as many TDs, and was a better back receiving out of the backfield. Walker arguably wasn’t the best back in the state let alone the nation

I disagree with your first statement. You can certainly be one of the best players in college football despite losing a game to a "bad team"

Or if your team is not a conference champ.

Heck your team can be awful and that shouldn't be a major consideration

Your stats speak more

Especially when compared to Hassan.

Also not surprising to see a fan base advocating for their player even if they are not being logical

Cheaters never prosper. Everyone knows they're a joke.

All of what Michigan has going now, was in grasp for State... and they got blown out twice and Walker disappeared. He's not even the best at his position, let alone the best player in the country.

I can understand it. He'd have been my pick before they played Ohio State, and he'd be number 2 or 3 now. I think it's a big oversight not to have him there.

If they wanted the 4 best players then maybe they should have the center from Iowa. I don't have a problem with Walker not being there. He faded at the end of the season. His true colors came out. I'm figuring Young is going to win. But really, is he the best player in the Nation? If he didn't play at Alabama would he even be a finalist? How do you really get the 4 best players there? It's too much to sort it all out. At least Desmond Ridder isn't there.

I'm not saying he's better than Hutchinson, but the NFLs lack of value for the running back position shouldn't have any affect on how you're viewed as a college player. If a RB is truly the best player in college football then give them the award. NFL teams will stick pick lineman and quarterbacks ahead of them.

They only invite four now, so harder to get invited to the ceremony.

Jonathan Taylor finished 5th in voting in 2019, and as great as Kenneth Walker's season was, it doesn't quite hold a candle to Jonathan Taylor's 2019 campaign (which, in other eerie similarities, saw him 5th behind 3 QBs and a DE (Young).

FWIW, Hutchinson is closer to 2019 Chase Young than Kenneth Walker is to 2019 Jonathan Taylor, IMO.

i live in tokyo japan. as you can imagine, its pretty rare to see college gear here of any kind. occasionally you will see notre dame, sometimes michigan or ucla / berkley gear that is sold in second hand shops and picked up by japanese hipsters. they almost always choose this gear for the color combinations rather than any sort of affinity (or even awareness) of the underlying school. i've stopped a few of these hipsters before when ive spotted them in michigan gear and they always look at me like im nuts and have no idea what to do/say when i start yelling 'go blue' at them. ive stopped doing that.

anyway, the day of the michigan msu game i was engaging in my usual pre-game routine listening to podcasts and reading about the game in the comfort of my apartment. the noon games start at 1am or 2am sunday morning here (depending on daylight savings) so there is quite a bit of day to kill before the actual game. after about three hours of winding myself up via mgopodcast, sam webb and the victors board, i was getting too stressed out and decided to take a walk over to the new olympic stadium to get my mind off the game looming later that day. my apartment is in the middle of town (near shibuya for those who know tokyo), but its on a quiet street off of a main thoroughfare. its primarily residential and there is little foot traffic. its pretty rare to see more than one or two people on that street at a time and i cant remember ever seeing anyone in recognizable college gear on my street in the nearly two years ive lived at this address. however, as i stepped out of my apartment's front entrance the day of top-5 match-up, the first person i see is a young japanese man wearing a white and green msu crewneck sweatshirt right in front of my apartment. perhaps it would have been forgivable or gone unnoticed if he had just been walking or otherwise out of my eye shot, but no, he was stopped right in front of my apartment adjusting his baby who he was pushing around in his stroller, and was positioned such that he was all but presenting the monogram 'michigan state' on his sweatshirt towards my direction. it was as if he had been specifically placed there by the michigan-hating football gods to exert maximum psychic damage on my BPONE'd soul. he did not look like an msu grad (he had a dignified air and relatable disposition) and i suspect if i asked him about the shirt he would have no idea about its significance (see above). instead i just scowled at him for this most improbable, absurd slight (of which he was entirely oblivious).

i had a pit in my stomach walking around after that and kept thinking back on the chances of that happening and how so much had to go 'right' for our paths to cross at that critical moment ahead of the the game. had he (or i) been a few minutes late/early, or if he had taken a different street, or just chosen a different sweatshirt that day, maybe my confidence wouldn't have been shook and maybe just maybe jj doesnt fumble the snap or maybe sparty bob doesn't takeover the replay booth. i ponder that sequence often when thinking back on the msu game - where everything that had to go perfectly right for MSU to win ultimately did, and am in awe of the universe's cruel sense of humor.

i went on high alert after that and ahead of the osu game i opted not to go outside at all and holed up inside all day out of fear of running into some scarlet and grey on the tokyo streets. it paid off.
