Michigan Player(s) plant spear in Spartan Stadium during pre-game

Submitted by MGoBender on

Apparently, per all the Twitters, some Michigan player(s) planted a spear on the block S during the pregame.

Does Hoke have any control over his team?

This is apparently why Dantonio went for the last touchdown (way to take the high road, Mark).  But still, if there was ever a time to not disrespect your rival, it was before this game.

EDIT: Some Tweets:

"Them putting a spear in a field before the game is not a product of their team but their program." - Dantonio on the UofM Pregame spear.

— Rico Beard (@RicoBeard) October 25, 2014

Connor Cook was clear, last TD was because MSU felt disrespected before game. Said a UM player stuck a spear in field before game

— Matt Charboneau (@mattcharboneau) October 25, 2014

Buddy just asked me if Dantonio ran it up because of Nussmeier's reaction but just heard UM players speared the S. That would explain it

— Jeff Riger (@riger1984) October 25, 2014

And worst of all:

Hoke said he was somewhat aware that one his players put a spear in the ground before the game but "not fully aware"

— Mark Snyder (@Mark__Snyder) October 25, 2014

Perhaps, not worst of all. This seems dubious, so please be untrue:

According to the #MSU players, they saw a #Michigan players throw a spear down on their field during the national anthem.

Final Edit: Appears to not be on the block S. Here's the .gif

This whole damn program is all about talking, but now showing up!  Sick and tired of skywriting, little brother and now this spear garbage.  Again this team/program think they are entitled to something by just showing up.

Do me a favor next time you want respect, do it on the field not with childish antics!

Not one of those Spartan asshats could look me in the eye and say they wouldn't have done the exact same thing on our field if given the chance.

You spray paint our diag. We spear your field. Both are childish acts but it's a rivalry. Let's call it even.

how can you not see the difference between a studen prank during the game week - something we've done many times with the Sparty statue over the years - and something done by PLAYERS on a rivals home field right before kick off in a game where we are a 17 point underdog?  Apples and oranges, and for me the final straw that Hoke is not only an idiot, he has no control of this team whatsoever.  Funchess is mailing it in, Devin barely moves in the pocket.  They put Shane in for ONE PLAY then yank him to let Gardner finish because they changed their minds?   Hill gets trucked by Cook early, then schooled by Lippett for a 70 yard TD.  Kalis is a turnstile.  and now Bolden is planting a stake or whatever into the head of the Spartan at midfield to piss off a team that has been beating our sasses.

Lack of institutional control.  This program is in total and complete dissarray.  Hoke has to go.

Out of all the inappropriate or disrespectful reactions that could have been had, rushing the ball for a TD to expand the lead at the end of the game, then answering the media's questions about the stake-plant don't even crack the top 200 for me...

Why wouldn't players do stupid crap like this? They see our AD acting like a 14 year old with childish crap like the the skywriting. Why would the players think they have to be any better?

This whole matter seems as dumb as Biggie Smalls vs Tupac in the world of "disrespect" war. We are the joke. Our team stinks. But, man, this is just stupid.

""Them putting a spear in a field before the game is not a product of their team but their program." - Dantonio on the UofM Pregame spear."

This coming from a guy who coaches a team for a school whose students vandalized University of Michigan property earlier in the week. Dantonio should make sure his own instituion's shit doesn't stink before coming off as high and mighty.

Not only did someone paint the Spartan statue in maize and blue just last spring, the actual statue had to be replaced in 2005 with a new statue, because the terra cotta statue (standing since 1945) could no longer withstand the damage of being painted by UM fans and refinished over and over again.

Not to mention the MSU marching band now has a 24-hour watch over the statue during UM week; because UM fans have painted the statue so many times in the past.

You have got to be joking if you think painting the block M once is even close to as bad as what UM fans have done to the Spartan statue over the years.

Really who gives a flying f***? Staee planted a flag in South Bend in 2006 before their game w/ the Irish. Now that screams of disrespect. This 'spear' planting was done to self motivate a defense before a huge rivalry game. TBH I don't care about flags or spears but lets make a big deal out of it so Dantonio punching it in at the end looks like a reasonable thing for a coach to do. Lets put it on the motivational board and move on. Just stop them and we aren't even having this conversation.

Let's recap some of Michigan football's biggest highlights of the year so far:

-An embarrassing 31-0 L to ND

-Terrible 1st half against the worst team in FBS. M-Oh

-A terrible offensive performance, at home, against a good Utah team. Punt team has 10 guys, twice. Storm/flood ensues. No fans come back. I don't blame anyone for leaving and not returning.

-Lose to Minnesota at home, by a lot. Hoke and staff bench Gardner and start Morris. Hoke and staff are the only ones who don't notice Morris getting a concussion. Concussion gate makes national news. Embarassment continues.

-Brady Hoke's press conferences gets worse and worse.

-Students start an anti Dave Brandon rally at the diag that continued to the University Presidents front lawn. Again making national headlines.

-Michigan plays better but still loses to a terrible Rutgers team. It was on the road, so of course they lose. Secondary gives up 400+ passing yards to Gary Nova. Let that sink in.

-Michigan actually wins a game. It took a night game, all blue uniforms, a Funchess lucky-as-can-be TD grab, and the refs to beat a mediocre psu team.

-Bye week. No torture for at least one saturday.

-Michigan gets pasted again by Sparty who is now Big Brother. Michigan decided to try to intimidate Sparty by placing a stake, aka a spear in East Lansing, during pre game. Plans fails. Michigan again makes embarrassing headlines. Lose by biggest margin in almost 50 years.

-Everybody is laughing at Michigan.

FIRE BRADY HOKE AND DAVE BRANDON RIGHT NOW!!!

I think the spike - not a spear - was a "D-B" move and I wish they hadn't have done it as it is a "D-B" move, but is it really that big of a deal?

Nothing was hurt...not the stadium, not the turf, etc...  The players are excited college kids trying to fire themselves up for a big game and did a dumb move that harmed......nothing.  It would be nice if Hoke or the head "D-B" had enough awareness to have stopped the idiotic move.

How is it all together different than MSU players slapping the BBall court several times a game - including the Block M on occasion.  They are firing themselves up, it literally hurt nothing, but can be seen as disrespectful.

P.S. In all honesty - the Green M on the Diag doesn't bother me much.  It seems to be part of the rivalry.  They paint our stuff, we paint their stuff.  I didn't like the 2002 (I believe) F--k UM all over buildings in 4 foot letters though.  Over the top.

Understand your station at 3-4, getting rubbed out by Notre Dame, Utah, Rutgers and Minnesota. Put the theatrics aside. Play the goddamn game, stop gifting turnovers, giving up big plays and dropping the ball. This is now a forever gif commemorating UM's disrespect of its rival. Unthinkable under Bo. If you disrespect them, than any victory over them is minimized and mad less significant. Play up against your rivals and give them due respect ( MSU is fucking 7-1!h and any victory over them is all the more glorious.
