Farewell, Red!

What a debacle. Even if this team does backdoor their win into the tournament, they don't deserve it one bit.

They're embarrassing this program out there. Michigan now has a losing record to a team that has been around two years.

I say this with all due respect, you are an ungrateful little nat if you are treat one of the all time greats in college hockey with this attitude. I am ashamed to be an alum of the university you pull for.

Just let Penn St continue to beat us and not make the tournament.  Let's face it, this hockey program has taken a major step back in the last 3 years, and not even making the tournament in the last two.  He's a legend and no one is dismissing that...but the time has come for him to hang it up.  If you can't see that, then I can't help you.

Keep up the red herring and strawman fallacies. Keep discounting the effect the OHL has had on our recruiting. Or how a few years ago we were an OT goal away from the national title.

This board sounds exactly like the Minny fans on uscho.com when Minny was completely terrible for five straight seasons from 2007-12. Don Lucia was completely toxic.

What players are you talking about? The OHL hasn't come anywhere near us in the last 5 years.

We lost Gibson and Cambell and got 2 and a half years of Shawn Hunwick instead.

Connor Carrick played 1 year in Plymouth. Cianfrone couldn't compete in the USHL and Milne couldn't get off our bench. Walsh wouldn't have came until next year.

We have a top-5 recruiting class coming in next year. We have a top-5 recruting class coming in 2015. All 3 of our 2016 recruits are at the NTDP camp.

What other recruits are they taking from us?

and it's another pointer about how variable college hockey recruiting can be with it starting so early on

Cianfrone was reputed to be 'top 10 overall pick in the OHL' levels of good when he committed. I think we Luke Moffatt committed he was supposed to be the best player in the world at his age. Heck, I think Tristin Llewellyn was supposed to be one of the top players in the world in his age group when he committed

A lot of variability in getting committments from 14-15 yr olds and then seeing what happens in the next 4-5 years before they ever skate with you

He dominated AAA, played average in the OJHL and poorly in the USHL. At 5'8, 160 he couldn't handle playing against bigger players so they asked him to reclassify.

I wouldn't even give the OHL credit for taking him, Michigan pretty much asked him to go.

Give me a break. People were saying the same thing about Lloyd. Want to know why? Losing to OSU 4 times in a row, losing to Appalachain St and Oregon at home? What are we supposed to do? Just wait it out with Red like Joe PA and Penn State? Penn State has won the B1G twice in the last 20 years. Before that they were winning 10 games every year. It's not being ungrateful if you have a streak of noticeably bad seasons and feel that the coach's time is probably up.

This just has to be the death knell for Red. If he won't retire, Brandon might Bobby Bowden him. Getting beat three times in a season by a glorified club team, once with a tourney birth on the line...game over.

I think we will be the first or second team out.  To have any chance we have to hope that there are no upset champions in conference tournaments and hope for someone else's bubble to burst.  There really only are 15 spots because no one from Atlantic Hockey is top 16 in PWR.

A number 4 seed might be for the better.  Michigan Hockey does its best when you expect nothing.

Time to get ready for basketball.  I guess I don't have to leave work early tomorrow.

Leads to a face off loss as Bennett can't get to loose puck. Hey Red, that line was out for over 30. Seconds, what about a time out in the defensive zone No reason to believe thinng improve much in the future with the same staff

This thread's lack of respect for Red embarrasses me as a michigan fan. 1/4" in closer into the goal and this thread would have turned into a post bang. Get some perspective.

You make it personal by saying "look at me and my access."

Really, none of us have any voice in decisions about where this program is going to go. Dekers or not. You're using your position in Dekers as a bullying stick to shut down people trying to reasonably argue with you. If you don't want to get called on that, don't bring it up.

As much as Bando and I dislike one another, he said something once like "go back and look at the finishes of the teams since the 1997-98 NCAA Championship season and tell me you aren't depressed".

I did. I was depressed.

Since the Porter-Kolarik year of 2007-08, look at this disaster.

  • 2008-09: 2nd in the CCHA, lost in CCHA Playoff final, lost in NCAA first round as a 1 seed to AIR FORCE
  • 2009-10: Meandered through the regular season with a 7th place finish, team showed a pulse and won CCHA Playoffs to lose 3-3 in 2010 NCAA Regional Final (still bitter about that one).
  • 2010-11: CCHA Champions, NCAA Runner-Up. Whoopie, one great season.
  • 2011-12: Meandered through the regular season until the team woke up in columbus. 2nd place in the CCHA, lost in CCHA Playoff final, lost in NCAA first round as a 1 seed to CORNELL
  • 2012-13: Meandered through the regular season with a 7th place finish, team showed a pulse but lost in the CCHA Playoff final, thus, breaking a 22 year long NCAA Tournament streak.
  • 2013-14: Strong start, horrific finish. Inconsistent. Lost to a second year program not once, not twice, but three times. That is absolutely humiliating.

Time out. I have pointed out numerous times that we never even got close to what we did in the 1997 football season except 2006 and that we were pretty much out of the national title race in September every year and I get blasted for having too high of expectations.

We've gotten to three frozen fours since 98 in hockey. I realize we've been punched in the dong a few times along the way, but the hockey team has arguably done much better living up to expectations than the football team.

I'm just saying, be consistent with calling out sports for underachieving.

Wolverine Devotee

Oh but didn't you know? Football isn't Hockey.

Different set of expectations.

Hockey has been to FIVE Frozen Fours since 1998 (2001, 2002, 2003, 2008 & 2011), actually. But the closest they've been to cashing in was 2011. The rest were hair-pulling-out frustrating Frozen Four losses. ESPECIALLY 2008. But you know, Terrier Curse.

Football had back-to-back Big Ten Championships in 2003 & 2004. Granted, neither were close to a BCS Championship Game like 2006 was.

But that doesn't matter since, "THE GOAL IS TO WIN THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP. MULTIPLELY."

Even though it's 2014 and not 1989, people still coddle the Football program and brush the fact to the side that there has been one mythical National Championship in the last 60 years.

Wanna know I changed my avatar awhile back from 42 to 11? Because it's time for a mindset change. I had the same dated views for the longest time. That's how I was raised. Big Ten Championship and Rose Bowl.

That doesn't cut it and should be a consolation prize if they don't win the National Championship or make the playoffs.

1/4 less losses to SHIT TEAMS this season and we wouldn't have been in that position today! How has he not made the tourney two straight years with all of this talent?? And how has he not won the big one in SIXTEEN given the kids who have worn that winged helmet?!

It's just time.

So are we the only school that has the issue of recruits bolting to the OHL? The other top tier schools that we compare ourselves to still seem to still field good teams.

Yes the OHL thing is an issue for college hockey, but Michigan is not the only school that has to deal with it

gwkrlghl

March 20th, 2014 at 7:39 PM ^

You don't have to be the in Dekers Club to understand hockey

In fact, I might argue that you're so close to the program that it's keeping you from looking at it objectively. This program's last great class was the Patch-Hagelin-Louie-Palushaj class and the program moseyed on downhill as that class trickled out the door. Without the glorious blip that was Shawn Hunwick, this team missed the tournament 3-4 years ago and never made it to that title game. Outside of him, this program has failed to meet expectations for years

So tired of the same shit every year. Teams never gel and underachieve and lose to teams with a fraction of their talent.
I am so pissed because I know I will right back watching it next season.
