Michigan @ MSU: A look at injuries

Submitted by markusr2007 on

Just a quick note on reported injuries from both teams heading into Saturday's games.

Michigan looks to be in considerably better shape than MSU going in (!KNOCK ON WOOD!).

Michigan tailback Chris Evans is questionable Saturday and WR Grant Perry is now probable.

Notable injuries for MSU include starting offensive guard/tackle David Beedle-59 and starting cornerback Darian Hicks-2.

True freshman Thiyo Lukusa (6-5, 335 lbs) will likely be Beedle's replacement?

Are Beedle and Hicks any good?  I just looked up Lukusa, and he was a high-ish 3* who ended up around #350ish in his class nationally.  Regardless, a true freshman (who weighs 335 - as a freshman, there is no way that's good weight) against this defense?!?!  HAHAHA

were all missing in the 2nd half last week.  Sounds like good news for our passing game.  From the Detroit News:

Nicholson and safety Demetrious Cox missed most of the second half last week against Maryland, as did cornerback Vayante Copeland. Dantonio said it was because of injuries the Spartans had to rely on a young secondary.

For the majority of that half, Willis and redshirt freshman David Dowell were at safety while sophomore Tyson Smith was at one cornerback and freshman Justin Layne was at the other. In the nickel package, freshman Kenney Lyke played for the first time.

"Better shape" is relative here. Our leading rusher is questionable, our LT is out for the season and maybe longer, and one of our cornerbacks to start the season is done for the year, too.

We are in better shape because we are a far more talented team, not because we're lucky with injuries.

I thought Michigan was also missing a starting(ish) CB in Clark, a starting OT in Newsome, a scholarship kikcer in Nordin, etc.

Are the Wolverines in much better shape injury-wise than MSU for this game or are you just saying things?

he was ejected in the 1st quarter the ejection is only for the rest of the game.  if it had occured in the 3rd/4th quarter it would carry over to the 1st half of next game

Bullough's targeting penalty occurred in the 1st half of Maryland loss.

He missed the 2nd half vs. Maryland and therefore "served his time".

He will play vs. Michigan on Saturday, assuming he doesn't continue the stupid antics in the 1st half of that game also, that is.

You sit out the remainder of the half the ejection occured in, and then the entirety of the next half of football, be it the second half of the in-progress game or the first half of the next game.

EDIT: Slow to respond!

He has a shoulder issue, a hand/wrist issue, and an ankle issue. He'll play though I'm fairly certain (he hurt his ankle/foot vs Illinois and came back mostly fine; it's almost certainly precautionary). He's just always gonna be one of those guys that are all kinds of beat up.

Hadn't heard that. Don't know if it's something new or if it is just a continuation of the issue he had in the game Saturday, which he was able to come back from.

He was able to play, that doesn't sound like something you need a walking boot for. Re-aggravation?

This would induce panic in the streets amongst its own fanbase but it would be a great troll move if some top players for a team decided to put on walking boots that they didn't actually need and make sure that their pics went viral, just to mess with an upcoming opponent.

My educated guess is that he's listed as "questionable" just to require MSU to prepare for him. I would be surprised if he plays and it's probably prudent for him to take this week off.

If he doesn't have a concussion history and the testing shows no ill effects, there's no reason he couldn't play. Jourdan Lewis had a concussion last year and came back the next week. Obviously, when it doubt, sit him for his own long term health.

For UM: Newsome and Clark are out for the year. Drake Johnson I don't believe will be back until I see it. Evans I doubt we will see (the biggest loss with that is his receiving ability out of the backfield, an area where MSU has struggled in the past). Bunting hasn't played since an undisclosed injury earlier in the year, but the drop off the Asiasi and Wheatley hasn't been significant (though Bunting may have been a better pass catching option than either).

On D, the DL is mostly healed now. McCray continues to deal with a beavy of nagging injuries, as he has throughout his career, but will play. Kinnel is the significant loss if he is out, as combined with Clark, it leaves for some depth issues in the defensive backfield.

For MSU: TOC is dealing with a nagging foot injury, while Terry has a hand injury. Beedle has some sort of injury since moving back to the interior (where he is significantly better, not that that is saying much because he was a really ill fit at LT). Clemons has moved from interior OL to DT.

MSU D: Reschke is for sure out (he's been injured a lot of his career), the younger Bullough is questionable, though probably isn't a significant impact either way. Ed Davis still doesn't look right either, and may never at this point. Hicks has some sort of back injury and should play, he's consistently mediocre whereas his backups have moments of looking better than him and moments they look worse. Cox was benched because he's been awful this season, but isn't injured.

I think injuries to UM at this point have actually been more impactful. As MSU claimed preseason, that actually have a lot of equal depth. The problem for them is that no depth separated itself, and it's all fairly mediocre.

Newsome's leaves Braden at LT and forced Bredeson into the lineup as a true FR. Both will have times they go up against McDowell (who is great). I think Braden matches up decently with McDowell as a DE, as he isn't one of the quicker guys that I think Braden will eventually struggle a bit with. Bredeson vs McDowell could be a major concern. I expect McDowell to play more DE, where I think he is much less impactful, but probably is the best for the DL unit as a whole (they have 3 DTs not including McDowell that is currently better than their DE2 not named McDowell).

Similarly, Clark plus Kinnel leave some questions for Michigan's Nickel package, which they will likely be in a bunch on Saturday as MSU is forced to be in obvious pass downs.

Thanks.  It would be great if you could post something similar each week.  Going into the last two games, victory was obvious.  Only injuries to be sustained was the question and concern.  There is so little information on injuries known beyond what is seen in the games, that its really difficult to know where they stand.
