Interesting how Gerdeman has become less of a haughty nut hugger of all things t(tm)OSU as Michigan has become the neighbourhood bully. I imagine it must pain him, somewhat, to watch an elite Big 12 team in Columbus these days.
November 22nd, 2022 at 7:43 AM ^
Is nut hugger the new synonym for ball lifter?

I think we should grind them into the boards

Buck nuts are all thinking they will dominate us like they did in 2018 and 2019. I think those days are long gone. I think it will be close and Michigan may win by a FG. But I'm hoping for a big Michigan blowout, something like 42-27.
November 22nd, 2022 at 12:43 AM ^
Most Buckeye fans have some doubt for the 1st time in a long time.
November 22nd, 2022 at 10:48 AM ^
I knew a fair number of OSU fans who were really fatalistic in 2018 and expected (remember UM was favored to win by 3 in ColuMbus)…..and that game went Mordors way big time. I’m hopeful we’ve equaled the matchup but know that they have talent all over the field.
November 22nd, 2022 at 1:07 AM ^
It's close to those days being long gone, but I think it comes down to how Michigan handles NIL. The talent disparity in the recent past was explainable because the programs recruited under two different sets of rules.
If Michigan can close up the talent gap, everything else is about equal (facilities, resources, coaching network, &c.). Michigan has an academic reputation advantage that usually doesn't make a difference in recruiting, but that gets more than negated by Ohio State's in-state talent advantage.
Note: edited for clarity!
November 22nd, 2022 at 8:00 AM ^
A win Saturday should help that cause.
November 22nd, 2022 at 8:40 AM ^
There's no 5-star on OSU that UM wouldn't have qualified academically. So, while UM may be a higher rated Univ on the whole, the idea that there's some "academic edge" that plays out in football is a bit ridiculous.
November 22nd, 2022 at 10:40 AM ^
seems like one would have to have intimate knowledge of the admissions process regarding scholarship athletes at both institutions in order to make this claim...
And that's not to say I believe the opposite is true...I just believe the general public doesn't know with any certainty which athletes would get into one vs the other. We know UM makes it rather difficult for undergrad transfers to get in...and we hear/read often about how from an academics & athletics standpoint, UM is more in Stanford/ND/NW territory, but none of us really know the actual admissions criteria for scholarship athletes at UM or OSU.
If I've missed a memo, and am wrong here, I welcome correction and enlightenment.
November 22nd, 2022 at 11:25 AM ^
I'll go back and edit my comment for clarity, but I think we're overall agreeing. Even if there are any recruiting positives for having an academic edge, that is overshadowed by OSU's wealth of in-state talent.
But I don't think the academic edge is a 'zero' in recruiting. You get a few players/families where it makes a difference, and these tend to be guys that Michigan really wants from a culture perspective.
November 22nd, 2022 at 12:26 PM ^
Hasn't it been established that we rarely ever get non-grad transfers due to admissions/academic restrictions? Also, wasn't it an admissions snafu that was part of the reason Xavier Worthy went elsewhere? Academics are not the only thing keeping us from having OSU/Bama level talent, but it isn't a non-factor either.
November 22nd, 2022 at 7:34 PM ^
Michigan has allowed borderline academic qualifiers on the team. This isn't true.
What is true is the undergrad or JuCo transfers. It's harder to admit them because of college credits. It's much easier to get freshman transfer or grad transfers for Michigan.
November 22nd, 2022 at 8:45 AM ^
In a certain way I can't blame them. This season does seem to rhyme a little with 2018.
OTOH Urban Meyer is long gone. If you told me that one team is dominant in the run game and less than average in the passing game, while the other team is superb in the passing game and has approximately zero running game, which one do you think would have the advantage?
November 22nd, 2022 at 9:21 AM ^
What if the running team's Heisman-candidate RB just got injured?
November 22nd, 2022 at 9:25 AM ^
It's self evident that injuries change the equation
November 22nd, 2022 at 2:33 PM ^
For what its worth Matt Millen would take OSUs offense 10 out of 10 times over U of Ms. Thats gotta account for something.

My favorite part, "Ronnie Bell had a nice 40 yard punt return for the Buckeyes". I wonder how that typo got past him, lol.
November 22nd, 2022 at 7:45 AM ^
Well no one seemed to notice the announcer calling him Ronnie Brown this week.
November 22nd, 2022 at 9:21 AM ^
Well spotted. I wasn’t sure if it was a brain fart or Gerdeman keeps ‘Buckeyes’ under Cntrl-V.

"But as Michigan showed last year when Stroud went for 394 yards and two touchdowns, passing yards are for show, running is for dough."
I remember fretting about Stroud's numbers for much of The Game last year, but yeah, it didn't matter all that much in the end, did it?
November 22nd, 2022 at 8:41 AM ^
Journalist: "Coach, what's the most overrated statistic in football"
Jim Harbaugh: "Probably everything but points".
November 22nd, 2022 at 9:47 AM ^
100+ of stroud's passing yards were courtesy of wr's making near impossible catches on poorly thrown balls. While those things actually happened before our eyes....they aren't events of high probability to repeat.
November 22nd, 2022 at 10:25 AM ^
For all the talk of bad weather and the flu, CJ Stroud and those WR's really did play their asses off last year. Olave, JSN, and Wilson were out there stuffing their highlight reels like crazy.
And it didn't matter, because they couldn't run the ball or stop us from running the ball. So they had zero control of The Game and we made em pay for it. And whether or not they can run the ball and stop the run this year is still an open question...
November 22nd, 2022 at 10:45 AM ^
I think this is the key - can OSU stop M's ground game, and can M make Stroud uncomfortable? The answers to those two questions seem like the biggest determiners of the outcome here.
November 22nd, 2022 at 10:52 AM ^
"While those things actually happened before our eyes....they aren't events of high probability to repeat."
Yeah, with OSUs receivers they are actually.
November 22nd, 2022 at 7:36 PM ^
And OSU got the best WR in the country in Marvin Harrison Jr. Marvin Harrison Jr. is likely a top 5-10 pick in '24 draft so we'll see quite a few circus catches from him this Saturday
November 22nd, 2022 at 10:52 AM ^
Ohio State has pirate ninjas at WR, and last year they all played themselves into the NFL.
Stroud...idk, if the book on a player is "falls apart with the slightest hint of pressure"...that doesn't bode well. I bet he at least gets a cup of coffee in the League.
I'm always going to fret about giving up 400 passing yards...but I feel like our DBs give up like 2-3 circus catches per game. And then little else. I don't see a repeat of last season's "Stroud throws it kinda anywhere and WRs make insane catches."
Either we shut down OSU's passing game, or we get torched. I don't see much in between.

Gerdeman respects the rivalry. Always has. It is the best rivalry in sports.
November 22nd, 2022 at 10:29 AM ^
Tony and Tom Orr are actually a pretty great listen on their Buckeye Huddle podcast. I simply can't stand most of the mouth breathers who talk about that program, but those 2 are actually a great listen. They're pretty fair and balanced in their takes (especially since last year broke their invincibility mindset). They've basically been talking non-stop about Michigan since the Penn State game and I appreciate that they actually try to be honest about how they compare to us and our strengths/weaknesses.
November 22nd, 2022 at 7:25 AM ^
Meh. I like Michigan Monday and appreciate his honesty. It’s all the other war painted violent asshats that bring down the rivalry. A true Michigan or buckeye fan could crack a walnut in their ass crack this week.
November 22nd, 2022 at 7:27 AM ^
I would click the link at the end of that article as well. It is an excellent piece on the rivalry
November 22nd, 2022 at 8:06 AM ^
I believe we will kick 12 field goals and win 36-35.
November 22nd, 2022 at 8:30 AM ^
And I’d take every dam one of them.
November 22nd, 2022 at 8:43 AM ^
How is OSU going to muscle in 5 TD's? They managed 3 last year with at least a presentable running game. Or, are they getting to 35 some other way?
November 22nd, 2022 at 8:53 AM ^
Probably passing to their 5* WRs since Michigan is currently lacking a pass rush. I know that any of our talk has zero effect on the game but I would be shocked to my core if Michigan somehow beat OSU comfortably.
November 22nd, 2022 at 9:22 AM ^
Except that they haven't been able to muscle in TD's against Iowa and PSU with their 5* WR's. The field shrinks a lot in the red zone when you can't threaten deep.
November 22nd, 2022 at 10:32 AM ^
They've absolutely had issues in the redzone (sounds familiar), but I wouldn't count on that this Saturday, since they play way over their heads against us.
The bigger issue is their defense actually helps this year, so just when you think you've got them on the ropes, JT Tuimoloau or Zach Harrison come ripping through the line and force a bad pass that gets tipped and intercepted or a fumble that gets returned for a touchdown and suddenly you're looking up at them on the scoreboard in a flash.
November 22nd, 2022 at 10:55 AM ^
"Except that they haven't been able to muscle in TD's against Iowa and PSU with their 5* WR's. "
OSU vs. Iowa.... 54 points, 4 passing TDs
OSU vs. PSU... 44 points, only 1 passing TD, but 354 yards passing
November 22nd, 2022 at 9:31 AM ^
Well that will be something, as it would smash the college and NFL records of 7 and 8, respectively.
Moody’s the man but that would say a lot more about the offense than it would about the kicker.
November 22nd, 2022 at 9:33 AM ^
I've put all the advanced statistics into my model and this what the data is telling me.
November 22nd, 2022 at 3:00 PM ^
Please consult the magic 8 ball just to be sure.
November 22nd, 2022 at 9:05 AM ^
I often get b10 stuff in my feed, non-Michigan related... Very often its OSU specific... and when I look at the comments, there's typically non-stop bravado and an assumption they will pound us into the sand.
Recently, I've seen a lot less confidence in Day, and specific to the offense and playcalling. I think their insistence on running, though it may make sense, is making their fans nervous.
Also... I hope on Saturday to see what happens when Hammer.. meets Nail.
November 22nd, 2022 at 9:42 AM ^
Gonna be nerve wracking till the ball kicks for sure. I had a gut feeling last year, this year I’ve got nothing. Does good or bad JJ show up? Does Stroud have all day to pick us apart? I really don’t know how to gauge this one and a blowout either way wouldn’t be shocking.
November 22nd, 2022 at 3:20 PM ^
Maybe - us blowing them out, to me would be shocking. The other 3 options are all plausible to me. I don't see that happening to them in ohio.
Let. me. be. wrong.
November 22nd, 2022 at 10:21 AM ^
Our guys have got to be amped but have to play smart and not beat ourselves. Taking stupid penalties is a recipe for disaster.

Nov 5 — Michigan 52 – Rutgers 17 (Rivalry Game)
lmao respect the rivalry with rutger
November 22nd, 2022 at 2:50 PM ^
Everything to me just seems to come down to how effective JJ is with his arms and legs. Granted his WRs will play a part and I think the O-Line will hold up ok.
Michigan has shown themselves to be pretty conservative with him all year. I think his effectiveness is the key to balance out the offense and put pressure on the Buckeye offense and when this UM defense is at it's best.
