Michigan-Michigan State Dueling columns
http://www.michigandaily.com/content/michigan-daily-state-news-dueling-columns
Per usual, the Daily's column is solid and witty, and the State News' column the usual grandstanding about how UM is dead, the number of days since UM beat MSU in football or basketball, and how RR scares people.

If you lead the series, you don;t need to be witty.... oh wait...

the msu writer says michigan has not played anyone lmao. UCONN>Western. Notre Dame=Notre Dame. Indiana>or= to wisconsin imo. both are unproven in nonconference play. as thrilling as beating threet by 1 point bc of a blocked fg are, giving up 21 to unlv was more impressive. Dont forget FAU!!!!! please, before you say michigan has played bad defenses and states defense is amazing, have them play a real offense first.

Notre Dame sans Crist for most of the first half != Notre Dame w/ Crist for the whole game. Indiana is not better than Wisconsin.
October 8th, 2010 at 10:08 AM ^
ya thats true i guess. i kinda overshot that one. but my point is msu's defense is wayyy over-rated
October 8th, 2010 at 10:15 AM ^
I think I agree on that. They've had some trouble for portions of games against not so great opponents. I hate that we have to wait and see who actually comes to play tomorrow. I want it NOW!

While I largely agree, ND (w/out Crist) on the road ~= ND at home, and IU on the road ~= Wiscy (with numerous injured players out) at home, so this notion that MSU has played a murder's row of teams compared to UM needs to be tempered. UM has already played two road games this year; the farthest MSU has gone was to a barely-filled Ford Field.

MSU can kick anyone's ass after Wisconsin. They've never been overrated, right? Did someone beat them in 2008? I can't remember... oh yeah. It was us with Threet as a quarterback. And of course their going to be smug after their two straight wins. After all, they surely weren't the two worst years of Michigan football or anything. And he says that MSU isn't worried about Denard. I think damefan1 should let them know he's had to eat the words "You think I'm worried about Denard Robinson?" before and they didn't taste good at all. I'm so excited for them to (hopefully) wipe the smirk off all the state fans' faces.
ONE MORE DAY! GO BLUE!
October 8th, 2010 at 10:37 AM ^
So yeah, scratch that one off the list.
October 8th, 2010 at 10:50 AM ^
The wording in his post is pretty vague, but here is referring to us beating Wisconsin in 2008 (and not MSU).
October 8th, 2010 at 3:33 PM ^
Yeah that phrase could've definitely been written better, but I was talking about Wisconsin. The next sentence says MSU won the last two, so I thought I covered my tracks. Guess not.

Accidental repost

I still don't get how MSU fans think their team is that much better. How can you say you're team is a Big Ten contender when you finish the season sub .500? And they put down Michigan as being a terrible team (1-7) in the Big Ten, yet it took OVERTIME to beat them in East Lansing last year. Talk about high horses. They really need to take off the Sparty blinders and see that their team isn't that superior to their big brother in Ann Arbor.
This year's dueling articles were better than last, at least from the Sparty side. If I remember correctly it was God awful last year. In fact, they've been underperforming for years (both sides).
And good lord, have you seen the State News writer's picture?
A smile only a mother could love. Yeesh.

What's more embarrassing: the quality of the MSU column or the fact that no one at MSU will understand how bad it is? The OP got it right: it's like this every year. Warm up the tractors.

so the msu writer used the little brother comment on us? maybe he should get his own material
and denard is apparently built for the WNBA, but other defenses have big guys too that havent stopped him yet
overall great article

Dueling condoms? Oh...columns.

More like dueling condescension.

What the **** is the relevance of men's basketball? If we're bringing random outside sports lets talk hockey, lacrosse, skulling, rugby, fencing. Hell, why stop at real sports? I bet the UM Pokemon team would totally kick sparty's ass!
October 8th, 2010 at 1:00 PM ^
I agree. Have to be good at something.
October 8th, 2010 at 10:57 AM ^
What does the writer for the MSU paper mean by the below statement??
So when Denard Robinson — built more for the WNBA than college football . . .

Those women are solid. Also, this:

That was the part I found most depressing in this article. Not only was it uncreative and factually suspect (6', 190 is a pretty big guy in my book), but it was downright offensive to make fun of female athletes in this manner. I'm fairly certain that any WNBA player has more athletic capabilities than anyone who writes for the State News, and I suspect more class as well. I'm not saying that the WNBA is some smashing success or is above ridicule, but trying to take pot shots at a college player AND professional female sports because you are too myopic to consider any broader critique is depressing for future "journalists".

Keyshawn Martin - 5'11", 185 lbs.
Denard Robinson - 6'0", 193 lbs.
So what does that make their sent from God special teams wizard? Your avatar would suggest that he's just a sleeve of wizard.

just showing their lack of a education. trying to use our own material against us "little brother" shows an incredible lack of originality and clearly how it does bother them. and how many times did webeat them 2 years or 3 years in a row- if that was to become a regular event then they might have something to start crowing about. can't wait for 2020 when we again have beaten them for like 7 or 8 times out of 10 (got to give them that fluke win every once in a while) .

I may be wrong on this, but isn't the big game at the big house reffering to the Big Chill. Which is hockey, not football.
And yes, that is a big game, because it is the largest crowd to ever watch a hockey game!
Do some research kid.
But I could be wrong. They could have indeed made big game at the big house shirts recently that I have yet to see.
So someone help me out here.....

which is something they never let us forget for some odd reason, they consistently feature god-awful writers in their paper, especially when compared to the Daily. The average quality of the State News is decidedly "high school" in my mind.
October 8th, 2010 at 1:44 PM ^
I remember reading the State News for about a year and then just giving up on it - it was incredibly sophomoric, usually more reactionary than thoughtful, and couldn't hold a candle to the Daily.
October 8th, 2010 at 7:46 PM ^
We had a J-school, but realized that it served little real purpose and that the experience gained working at the Daily was far more important. We continue to regularly churn out professional journalists without having to waste tuition dollars.
October 9th, 2010 at 10:49 AM ^
I thought the state article was terrible.....Even looking at it with an unbiased perspective.
